View Full Version : Not always getting credit for sinking ships...

So the last couple nights Ive been fortunate enough to attack some rather lightly guarded convoys. Both times I really gave them hell and sunk several ships. But I'm noticing I'm not getting credit for all of them. To clarify, they are all British ships (I checked) and when they sink I get a grey icon on the map, not the typical red one and it doesnt look like I'm getting credit for the kill. Any ideas why? My only theory is that I hit them with one torpedo and they dont sink, but then the weather (bad storm both times) sunk them and the game isnt giving me credit for the kill. Probably wrong about that, but its the best guess I have. So frustrating to sink a large merchant and then not get credit for it. Any ideas gentlemen? Thanks!

You may be right about the weather
The grey icon is usually associated with weather sinkings
Grey icon means the ship went down in bad weather and you don't get a thing for that. Use more torps to sink the suckers.

Not getting credit for ships is a stock SH3 bug. To get credit you must be within range of the ship when the 'She's Going Down' message appears. This means that you must either be within visual range (if on the surface) or within hydrophone range (if submerged)

Aw man, I guess thats it then. That totally blows my whole strategy. I figure if the weather is horrible I'll give them one torp each and they will be goners because the weather will take care of the rest. Shame you dont get credit for it, seems like a great plan to me. I sink so many ships doing that. Bah! Oh well, I'll sink em the old fashioned way I guess.

A real Kaleun doesn't concern himself with getting recognition for his sinkings. Use but one torp and let Mother Nature log the Kill...;)

Yeah, I found this out the hard way too, by losing contact in near zero visibility - got it right back, but still lost the kill. Pretty little pyro ammunition ship, sunk by the weather - and that massive jagged hole in her shnozz.
I like a nice, single torpedo bow shot in heavy seas, so they take water and down they go. The faster they run, the quicker they drown. Now I just slowly shadow them while submerged to make sure I get credit for the kill - it can take quite a while, and in poor visibility you have to stay extremely close, because any loss of contact and you can lose the credit.
Note: This approach can be markedly unhealthful if they have any irritable chums about.

haha true I shouldnt care about getting credit, its all about winning the war! Then again though sinking 10 ships and not getting any credit doesnt allow me to "afford" that shiny new submarine, so I'm going to have to change tactics.

I've also had this occur, thankfully not often.
Hunting in foul weather is hard enough but loosing a hit to the 'grey etch-a-sketch' is a tough pill.
