Alright lads, long time Flight Simmer, IL-2 and FS9, going to go into the briney deep with SH3 then SH4.
Your, opinion DVD or DL? Does the DL have SF on it....why would it? Newbie questions. Great forum and great information...you guys are awesome!

Both have SF. You should probably get the DVD, you can install the game as much as you want.

DVD is always better. Then you always have a copy ready to go, without the worry if it has been installed to many times.
Hi mate, and welcome to Subsim!!:up::up:

Welcome, Wilcke!
With respect to your question, I have the DVD, but would just as readily purchased the DL version. I preferred to have a the printed material, so I went with the former. If you purchase the D2D DL version, you're not limited to a specified number of downloads, so that shouldn't weigh into your decision. Not to mention you can always backup your DL to a DVD.

I have the download version from Direct2Drive. I keep the download on my computer so I dont have to redownload it all the time, but you do have unlimited downloads, just limited installs before you have to request a new serial. When I ran out of installs I simply emailed Direct2Drive and they gave me a new serial to use, within 24 hours of my request.
Thanks to all for the info! Again, great forum! Looking forward to that first patrol.

Welcome Aboard!!! I also prefer the DVD because then I have the box it came in. Wouldn't know what to do with my extra time if I couldn't keep knocking it off the desk with my elbow or coffee cup ;) .

Welcome to SubSim:up:
Get the DVD so you can install and uninstall the game as often as you want. Then get GWX (from the link in my signature) and you will never take the DVD out of the CD-player:yep:

Get the DVD so you can install and uninstall the game as often as you want. DVD is great, however, as stated above, you may also install and uninstall the DL version of the game as often as you want. ;)

You're correct but I meant that you can install it whenever you want without having to contact the company to get serial numbers etc. In my opinion it's much simpler

A bit of advice from an old Air Force puke and flight sim buff (Combat Flight Sim 1, 2, 3) who also did a lot of modding of aircraft, airfields, cockpits. You will find this a very different world. You have to slow way, way down and develop more patience than any combat pilot was ever born with (I know as an ex) with different tactics. But that's one of the allures...sort of cross training.
What will be (maybe) frustrating is the fact that the modding is far more complicated and distant than Microsoft provided in their releases. So unless you are a dedicated graphics designer or coder, probably you will not be able to get into the complex world of modding the action or graphics very much. There are a large number of mods available done by dedicated and talented people, but be sure to read their install carefully.
I would suggest cutting your teeth on the standard SH3 install, then trying the more difficult, but more realistic and beautifully modelled NYGM and Grey Wolves extensive rewrites/models.
Welcome aboard...and remember, here you cheer for the Germans to win.

DVD. That way you'll have the cool box, and the map. Also you'll have a cool shiny disc you can point to and say "See? I play Silent Hunter III", and your friends will all go "Ooh!" and "Ah!"
