View Full Version : BOLD device - active/passive sonar decoy?

Is the BOLD sonar decoy in SH3 modelled as an active AND passive sonar decoy? I thought it was a decoy for active sonar; some sort of bubble screen reflects sonar pings. On the other hand, he graphic makes it look like it is cavitating, and hence i wondered if it was accompanied by sound. If so, I could use it as a noise screen to help with my escape. Come to think of it, why didn't subs have decoy devices that make a huge amount noise, and thereby destroy the acoustic environment during their escape?

Bold works for both active and passive sonar. However, in SH3, using Bold is not always effective and frquently doesn't seem to help at all. I think that escort experience level also plays into the equation--the more experienced the crew the greater the chance they will ignore Bold. I can't prove it though.
I still use Bold though and think it sometime helps me escape. But timing is everything. Don't use it when the escort already knows where you are, they'll ignore it. I usually use it when they make a run on me and then run and turn from where I dropped it. I try to put it between me my pursuer.
And always with mixed results.
:shifty:
The way I use BOLD is to go flank speed and when you get to your maximum underwater speed, cut the engines, shoot a BOLD, and make a hard turn left or right.

But I feel it is better than making a new thread (see I do use the search function pbpbpbpb!)
Did we ever get an answer for how SH3/GWX models the Pillenwerfer?
From the descriptions on the various webpages it is unclear whether it was designed to defeat passive hydrophones or active sonar (or both).
Regardless of what it did in real life, does anyone know fer sure what it does in SH3/GWX?
An answer to one of the questions on the original thread:

That would be the Siegmund http://www.uboataces.com/sonar-decoys.shtml
