View Full Version : Promoting Stabsoberbootsman

I have a pretty capable sonarman who has done well by me, who's current rank is Stabsoberbootsman. I read in the Wiki that Oberfahnrich is the next level up.
But I believe Oberfahnrich is the lowest officer rank. So, if I promote my Stabsoberbootsman, is he no longer an NCO and now an officer, and counts against my officer total? Or can he no longer be promoted, as he has maxed out as an NCO?
I'm trying to do some career planning for my scurvy crew (wait, they suck on lemons all the time, must not have scurvy). OK, my sausage chomping crew.
Thanks!

Unfortunately you can't promote him more. The only way would be to manually edit the crew files in your campaign save (add a few values to his log).

If ur using SH3 Commander then go to where u manage your crew. there u can change names and edit rank and give out medals (alot faster then the game allows for).
In your case u want to promote a "warrant officer" to an "officer", its possible, bear with me.
Step one, while in the game, enlist a new officer, with the lowest rank possible.
Step Two, exit out of the game and bring up SH3 Commander and go to manage your crew
Step Three, your going to have to remember that officer's name, find it on the list and replace it with the name of the warrant officer, click apply.
Step Four, Dismiss the warrant officer's character for your crew manifest.
Once you have completed these steps your Warrant Officer is an official officer on your boat.
But u need to have SH3 Commander inorder to do that, if u dont then u will have to go into the Text files and mess around. Quite honestly i wouldnt do that, cause u risk messing up the whole thing.

It won't work as requested, as the new-old radioman won't have these values set properly:
- number of patrols,
- experience gained,
- possibly renown gained,
- voice (and voice IS important when we're talking about a former radioman),
- and possibly some more.
And I doubt Rykaird would be willing to 'cheat' like that, as whole the issue is about immersion and taking a very carefull approach towards your crew, like personalizing them etc. :)
So it can't be done without changing your txt crew settings, I suppose... But still could be wrong.

Yeah ur right i forgot about the good stuff. But everytime you promote someone then their experience level drops and the cycle starts again. hmmmm very interesting but stupid.................. if you want the painless way of promoting your warrant officer to an officer then use SH3 Commander but if u want to keep what you have then ur going to have to "hack" into the text files and change some stuff.

Not quite like that too. ;) The level of experience is displayed as a numerical value, starting from 0 up to no limits. Only the green bar "starts anew", while the value grows any time he gains new experience.

Thanks for the tips, but I don't want to really work around it. Emmo will be pleased to get an Iron Cross 2nd Class and remain a Stabsoberbootsman.
One more quick question - can promotions be "saved" and used after a later mission, or do they have to be expended now or they are lost?
EDIT: Whoops, it was right in the Wiki: "If an available promotion is not given before the next mission, then the opportunity will be lost. Use them or lose them! (Same thing with medals)"

If you have SH3 Commander Then you can promote anyone in ur crew, thats if they have the required experience to be promoted. And you can give out medals when you, the Captain deems neccesary.
I reward my crew with Spanish cigarettes stolen in Vigo and medical alcohol begged from the nurses. :smug:

When I'm busy begging nurses it isn't for medical alcohol. :o But you're crew must be very appreciative.

I think if you dismiss an officer after a patrol and your sonarman has at least 300 reknown you can promote him to Oberfanrich.
I do not know if in GWX works, but if your Stabsoberbootsman has sufficient exp points to be promoted and you have less that 5 officiers in your boat, after a patrol, when You are given medals and promotions to your crew, if you select the especific Stabsoberbootsman, even he is not highlight, you can give the promotion and he becames a Oberfahnrich.
I did it in last campain before GWX, I read it in a thread that it could be done like this, and in SH3 commander, I couldn't do this.
I promoted one of my stabsoberbootsman of the engine room to an officer.

Sigh. For those that missed it last time...

And to reiterate my last line again, it can be done in SH3 AND GWX, exactly as Rhodes stated. Likewise you can promote a sailor to a Petty Officer in the same fashion.
Keep in mind that promoting NCO ranks to officer ranks was not common, and would only have been done in emergencies.
Generally the less educated would have joined as sailors (Matrosen), and if they were lucky, may have reached the rank of stabsoberbootsman in their 30s.
Those from higher class backgrounds with better education would have joined the officer class as young as 17 as a Midshipman (Fähnrich).
