I'd have problems being assigned to a vessel with a name like that. Sounds like a lady you'd visit while on liberty in Italy.

Westgate'
I surmise you're new to subs..........WWII subs were named after fish not women, but........I was on the Segundo SS398. Segundo in Spanish means second. But our motto was "Second to None".........

Man I was goona ask you about being on subs........I just knew it was so......Since my boat was Segundo (SS398), I'm Surmising that yours was a nuke? No problem we're brothers of the deep......But my Heart Lies in Diesel Boats Forever (DBF)

Geetrue,
Please forgive my stupidity, if you'd been on a nuke it would have been (SSN).. Were you on one of the last diesels? I think I remember they bruoght out the Harter, Darter, Trigger and Trout as the last boats. Is this true?

I'm a little confused by those pictures and explanations (especially because they discuss running the engines...are they just keeping her float-worthy, or are they keeping her fully service-worthy (and if so, where are her props)?

I grew up in Benicia and lived in Vallejo for 15 years. The last 5 on Sandy Beach on the dock of the bay. Here's a pic of me taken at #9 Sandy Beach Rd. during that time. Note the jetty at the end of the Napa river behind me on Mare Island. I think you can see the old torpedo magazines behind me to the right.

You sure look happy Ishmael ... don't you live there anymore?
Geetrue,

I've been here since 1999 and you would be one of the first stink boat sailors I've met online ... you better believe I was on one of the last diesel boats and one of the fastest too ... four big fairbanks morse diesels running at 25 kts on the surface, pull the plug and be at 60 feet in less than 30 seconds.
USS Salmon SS-573 was first classified as SSR to lead the fleet till nukes came out, then we were going to be used as a refueler for the Martin PM 6 jet seaplane, before it crashed in the Potomac and ended that program. Then they took off the radar and let us roam free. We won seven "E"'s in a row you know.
I think they only made two or three after the Salmon, but they were barbel hulls to test the new fast attacks coming out.
Glad to meet you sunvalleyslim ... maybe we tied up next each other one time. I remmeber Ballast Point 63 to 65 tied up to the Catfish, Sculpin, Permit, with the Redfish all by itself on the pier all the time.

Tell me the truth Ishmael ... did you ever smoke pot?

I was looking for a desktop picture of the USS Pampanito in San Francisco when I found this old thread.
You don't have to answer Ishmael ... I was just kidding you
