Woot, my first post!
Hello:)
I just started playing this game recently and it has really grown into me, it seems slow but that just makes it more gratifying to finally sink something (that isn't yourself...)
Anyway, #1 - I tried using my AA gun on patrol #2 I think, but my crew wouldn't man the gun due to "storm", the NO though said the skyes were clear, there was no fog, and wind was at 7 m/s. What's the threshold for when they won't man the deck guns anymore? (I'm assuming any kind of rain/fog will make the panzies say "nope, we can't man the guns right now, due to storm"...the panzies!!). In a later patrol when the wind was 5 m/s I found out the AA won't finish off a C2 anyway :doh:
#2 - What's the purpose of transfering flotilas? I'm on the 1st flotila, and I just "bought" a type vii uboat I believe (finally, more then 5 torpedoes!!), what would transfering around do? Do missions change for different flotilas? (Like from "patrol this area" to "go hunt this specific target" or something?)
:D
Oh! Also, read the entire humorous picture thread, it's hysterical!

hi and welcome .
yes the deckgun threshold i think is 7mps so they will not fire it.
the purpose of transfering is so you can get better uboats later in the war, also you will be sent to different locations if you change flotilla
Khourieat

So are ther especific ones I should aim for? Or just the act of transfering will make better uboat options show up?
I was just getting used to getting close enough to the port to dock at it, without crashing into it :oops:

Woot, my first post!
Hello:)
As-salam alaykum, Khourieat!
As far as I remember, wind speed 7mps or more makes the guns unusable in the stock game. In GWX (a big.... no, wait, a HUGE mod for SH3 that one must love) it's not only the wind speed, but also other factors, like rain.
My general believe is - when you have a chance to sink a single ship with your deck gun per patrol, you are a lucky guy. I had several patrols with no possibility to use it once. Stick on your torpedoes as a primary weapon. :)
The only purpose I see is some variation. Read in manual about the flotillas - they are placed in different bases, so you'll be sent to different regions of the world depending on the flotilla. There are also differences regarding the boat types you can choose. But as long as you have your type VII boat you won't need to be transfered if you're ok with your assigned grids and if you don't want to 'buy' a type IX boat (that won't be cheap, by the way).
Try GWX or any other big modes after you play at least a few patrols with the stock game. They are really unbelievable (see the stickies for them). :up:

Hi and welcome, if you don't like bumping into things when you return, you can finish the Patrol within 25 km from Port. You press Esc and then choose 'Dock at .....'
Hi matey, and welcome to Subsim!!:up::up::up:
Welcome to this den of murdering predators. When the French Atlantic ports become available, transfer to France. If nothing else for the food and wine. Never mind Madame la Marquise and her girls.
And there is no better pleasure than returning to port manually after a tough patrol. I always have docking drink while maneuvering my boat up to the quay.

Thanks for the welcomes!!
25 km?!? I thought it was 5 km! :damn:
My friend gave me this game because he couldn't pass the torpedo tutorial (#4, I can't complete it 100% either, after I sink the third ship the other two vanish, must take place in the twilight zone), but no manual. I need to hunt him down and see if he has the instructions...
25 km will be a lot eaiser to manage from the map :know:

Khourieat; Welcome to the forum!
Stock game settings for the stormconditions can be changed with a text editor, when I get home in a few hours I'll post the file location and the settings I use for the VIIB boat. Seems to be a good compromise and lets you use the guns in mild rain and waves.
If you haven't make sure you get the 1.4 patch for the game. I also recomend the other mods in my sig, especially the dials.

The manual that comes with the game is included in your installation under your \SilentHunterIII\documentation folder, as the file SH3_MANUAL.pdf (this can be read and printed with Adobe Reader). Likewise, the keyboard reference is in the files SH3_QRC_PG1.jpg and SH3_QRC_PG2.jpg. The map that came with the game is in (what else?) SH3_MAP.jpg

Thanks!
I'm waiting on mods for now, I just started playing a few days ago :p I'd like to get a feel for the base game first, it seems fun enough (although I have removed the stamina thing, that just seemed really unnecessary).
Wind changes would be good! I can live with the shaking, the rain I can understand, but a little bit of wind confused me (they're panzies I tell you :arrgh!: )

Good thinking getting a feel for the stock SH3 first; I recommend playing stock for 1-2 weeks first then you will appreciate the difference the various Mods do to the game afterwards.
Comes time for you to add Mods and you encounter any difficulties then don't hesitate to post as there is always some-one here to provide an helping hand :up:

Khourieat; Ok open the NSS_Uboat7b.cfg with a text editor (textpad/notepad) located in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Submarine\NSS_U boat7b
Locate the StormConditions=
I use; StormConditions=13,1.7;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]
Works for me not maxed out either. The catch is sometimes the watch crew doesn't wear rain gear.

I was shot back by a merchant as early as in October '40. But only once.

I'm having issues just finding the merchants...are there any areas where I'll find one in the AN grid? I just got sent to AN48 and after 3 weeks or searching I've found all of TWO enemy ships, and the C2 took 3 hits to go down (when did they add armor?!?)
I'm not looking for like a super convoy or anything, but knowing if there is a grid in the AN set I can visit to spot ANY enemy ships would be really handy :cool:

From your description you're obviously in the right file.
StormConditions= is the LAST line in the [Properties] section (The one with all the depth stuff. Its the only non-depth thing in that section).

It looks like you accidentally deleted the Stormconditions line when you were in the file.
The rest of your file looks exactly like it should for a stock 1.4b installation.
If you backed up the file before looking in it (always a good idea), just copy the original one back.
If you did not back up the file before looking in it, then
insert the following line AFTER the "TorpLaunchMaxDepth=20;meters" line:
StormConditions=7,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]
Like I said, the rest of your file looks OK, so hopefully this will correct the problem. For now, just insert the line exactly as it appears above. If that works, then later you can play around with the line to change the wind speeds at which you can use the deck gun.

Oh I'm using whatever version the disk came with :D
I guess I should update it one day...
You can get the patch from Ubisoft's official site - I'll include the link at the end of this post. You don't need to get the first three patches btw - 1.4b is cumulative.:yep: (the old ones aren't available anymore anyway). After installing the patch, you will then see the threshold value for the gun crew in your .cfg.
Also, make sure to get the correct patch. There are US and European versions, and versions for online-purchases vs physical copies.

Thanks! I probably will, this game is fun, a bit hard though...I think I need to work on how to sink a C2, right now it's taking 3 shots, I haven't even bothered going after any war ships yet (Except for armed trawlers, but apparently they're shallower then 4 meters...)
And also thanks for the path stuff, I'll probably do that later, I don't usually path games, just takes away from the little free time I have to play, and this game is LONG :rotfl:

5 meters impact only?? I set them for 3 meters magnetic (I'm using T1's still, I don't like the T2s, will eventually switch to the T3s if ships start to dodge my point blank shots) and the blasted boat went clear over the torpedo...there was some light weather involved, but it didn't keep them from shooting me up good :down:
If 3 meters went underneath it though, I'm inclined to think 5 would miss even worse...
Of course that was the ONLY time I've ever wasted a torpedo on one of those things, the darn thing might've just missed and sank too low or something...
Either way, I think I'll avoid wasting torpedoes on small military ships, sank a destroyer yesterday and it was only worth 1100 tons (or did I read it wrong and it's actually 11,000!?)
Lame, sure taught them a lesson about following me though...

I believe John was suggesting the "5 meter depth, impact setting", for the C2 (which has a draft of 7.8 meters), not for the Armed Trawler (which only has a draft of 2.5 meters).
And yes the destroyer was only 1100 tons. Most merchants have a tonnage much higher than their military escorts (That's why they're the ones your supposed to be shooting at:) ).

Since you're using the stock game. This is a link to a chart showning the "weak points" of all of the ships in the stock game:

The colors mean:
Green = Rudder
Blue = Keel
Pink = Ammo Bunker
Yellow = Engine Room
Orange = Fuel Bunker
The number in BOLD is the draft.
I would second Gezoes' suggestion that you patch your game up to 1.4b, the next time your submarine is in port. It fixes a number of bugs and only takes a minute to run the patch file.

I've still some concerns about what patching might trigger with Starforce, so I keep putting it off. When I have extra time though, I certainly will :up:
