Hi matey! Be sure to remove ALL remains of your previous installation of SHIII, including the sh3 folder in "my documents".

Make sure all your files are deleted both under program files ( ubisoft folder ) and SH folder in My Documents. This has happened to me in the past. Give this a shot.
Not sure if you had any careers, is so remember to save them prior to deleting, again located in your My Documents folder.

Had a similar issue. And after two days of cursing it appeared that... my installed game IS ALLREADY version 1.4 and there's no need to install any patch (I was told before it's 1.3 version). So I installed GWX directly on it and it works till today. Try this. :)

Do the uninstall for Silent Hunter and SH3 Commander.
Then search for the Silent Hunter and SH3 Commander Sub-Directories in your C drive. These are subdirectories of the Program directory.
Delete the Silent Hunter and SH3 Commander sub-directories;they retain files that will conflict with the reinstall of 1.4b patch.
It would also be a good idea to run a program called Crap Cleaner which will remove many needless files and issues. It's a free download, run a google search for it. You'll be amazed at the harddrive space it frees up. I routinely run it before I turn off my computer.

Are you sure you're trying to install the proper version? There are four different patch versions. Two American (DVD and Download) and two European (DVD and Download)

I was trying to load the patch several times on a new SH III install. It would not work. I finaly uninstalled SH III from the diSk (not manually). I then reload SH III from the DVD, Went to the UBI site and downloaded the 1.4 patch from them right into my clean SH III. wORKED LIKE A CHAMP.

Anything else on this?
This happened to me recently. For an error message regarding sh3.exe there seems to be no option but an uninstall & reinstall.....follow the fine advice in other posts. However, I also found that I was getting messages about the upgrade not being possible because a help file (I forget which, i think the english help file) was an unrecognized version - if you get this message, delete the helpfile (or move it somewhere else) & try again, it should work.
You may get a Starforce error that tells you that you have a virus - you probably don't, there is a solution for this problem here:

When you uninstall SH3 and then reinstall it, you will most likely get an error message when you try to reinstall the 1.4b patch.
The reason is there are some leftover files in the Silent Hunter directory after the uninstall of SH3. IIRC, there are three left-over files that interfere with the 1.4b patch reinstall.
Here is the solution: After you uninstall SH3, do a search of your C drive for the Silent Hunter Directory and then delete it. The reinstall of SH3 will replace it with all new files and your 1.4b patch will install properly.
