Although the main site (http://www.hnsa.org/sound/#sealion) has been mentioned before in several different posts, here are two sound files that simply must be heard.

http://www.hnsa.org/sound/sonobuoy2/record19.ram

http://www.hnsa.org/sound/sonobuoy2/record20.ram

In both, you hear the audio recordings from sonobouys dropped during the hunt (and kill) of the Japanese sub I-52 in the Atlantic. In the first, you can clearly hear the swishing sounds of the submerged and running submarine . . .

and also the explosion of the acoustic torpedo that mortally wounded it. You also can clearly hear the loud seething hiss of escaping air.

In the second one, you hear the hull being crushed, its bulkheads collapsing, as it sinks to its death and is crushed.

Having been playing SHIII now for many months, and being on the 'inside' as it were, it's a profound and poignant thing to listen to, as my imagination all too clearly can picture what it must have been like for them, fighting to survive, yet ultimately failing.

Good one, Albrecht...Really put things in perspective.....Imagine those guys, trapped in that steel tube, knowing that this was their final dive...Its true, mate, this is just a computer game to us, but for some this was the cruel reality.. I just hope death came quickly to them..

Reading first-hand accounts of life on these u-boats is always impressive, but hearing this was prrety terrifying. Both my father and I are pilots, and while i have dealt with emergency situations before, I feel much more confident dealing with them at 30 000ft than I would 80m under the surface.

As immersive as this game is, we should count ourselves lucky that we are not in the position those 30 year-old Kaleuns were...:nope:

Excellent link however.

The I 52 had rendezvoused with a U-boat earlier that day and if I remember right, two German officer came on board to guide the I-52 to germany. It also carried other precious metals badly needed by German industry. Of course, the American task force was sent to the rendezvous area after deciphering enigma messages.

It's so eerie! Sent a chill up my spine listening to it. Thanks for digging this out...I'd never come across these recordings before. I listend to the Sealion recordings too, and was fascinated. Whenever I heard them order a torpedo away I couldn't help thinking of the poor sailors that were on the receiving end. War truly sucks!

Thanks Von Hesse'
That was awesome, listening to history, knowing that men were about to meet their maker..........perils of being underwater with no chance to change the course of life....
