View Full Version : Idea For A Subsim Summer Trip?

Hi there i was talking online with a very good friend of mine last night when it was pointed out to me how close i live to the German WW2 U-Boat bases of Kiel and Whilemlshaven.
I was thinking of going up to vist one or maybe both at some point over the summer holidays. Well i though to myself well why go on your own. So i was wondering if any members of the community would be intrested in visting the above mention sites at some point over the summer time. We could even turn it into a big Subsim trip and event.
Well anyone intrested just leave a post.

I'd be right with you Sir but I'm over here in the States. Would be quite an expense for me:down:. I will make my journey to U-505 in Chicago.

Being a 'pongo' you may need a bodyguard going into a naval base ;)
If your buying the beers then I could give it further consideration :hmm: ....might even let you have a look at my baton/truncheon :rotfl:

I just wondered how many people might be intrested. If the was a good enough intrested i would look into a bit more. If not i would just plan it and go on a trip up there with maybe my Dad if he was intrested enough.
It would be great if alot of people would be intrested and could make it.
Perhaps we could tempt Neal from his copy of SH4 and get him over to germany.

Depending on when you're planning to go and on the finances of the whole trip I might be interested;) :D

Well its very early in the planing so far matey i only got the idea last night. I dont know what time i have off in the summer yet so im just see who would be intrested at the moment just try to gage numbers.
If enough people show an intrest then will look into where to go and what to do and where to stay.
As i said before if anyone has been to any of the German bases before and has any tips it would be great to hear them.

I'd love to go but I'm moving to Australia next month!

If you have a copy of the book "Wolfpack" by Gordon Williamson there's lots of details on u-boat pens and bunkers, and even a short chapter called "Visiting French U-boat Bases and Bunkers Today" and tells you how close you can get to them, directions on how to find them, and which ones you can get inside if you wanted to visit the French bases too. It does cover the German bases and if you're planing a trip I'd highly recommend this book as it gives lots of detail about each base, how it was built etc.

I had plan a trip this summer from New Zealand to look that the U-boats at Kiel, Whilemlshaven and Chicago (U-505) :D . However, I had to cancel my trip due to not been able to get a new passport before my start date for my trip to the USA & Europe  . But I am planning to go next summer or in a couple of years, after I save some more money.

You must have awful beaurocracy there, in New Zealand. :) Halaf a year to get your passport... Unbelievable.

And as to the trip I'd simply go to climb some mountains... Don't you have enough after this long months spent at sea? Visiting bases?! Sounds like you were seriously ill and wanted to see your home port last time before passing away... Get your lives, Kaleuns! ;)

Interesting idea this! However, looking at my wallet, probably only Wilhelmshaven is doable. There's a boat there? Because a sub, beer and you lot sounds good

And, it would also give me a chance to swing by nearby Bremerhaven given some research. I have some unfinished family business there.

P.S.: XXI U-2540 Wilhelm Bauer is preserved in Germany as a museum, I just don't remember where.

Of the former sub-bases you does not see much today, only in Kiel you can see the ruin of the subpens. In Wilhelmshaven the area of the former subbase is now a public beach, bar, restaurant area. The subpens in Hamburg are gone now and on that area is the new container terminal located.

Next to my house in the forrest is the former torpedo and ammunition camp for the WWII sub-base Hamburg. Today you can see there only some destroyed shelters and barraks and maybe deers. ;)

i'd be quite happy to spot a couple of modern subs in Kiel, are they visible?

You lucky sods... getting to see a Uboat for real. Wish I could get over there too but it ain't gonna happen anytime soon I'm afraid. The "Warden" says so. LOL

Not to hijack your thread Chris, but I thought this might go along with seeing history for us over here on the eastcoast of the US. If we can plan it for the same day then we can all raise a toast to both sides of the pond at the same time. :D A tribute to all the vets living and lost from the war. :D

So with that.... how about the guys close to Camden, New Jersey plan something to see the USS New Jersey this summer? I've been by it numerous times and thought of taking the tour, but it's too frigging cold to do it now. LOL Tho I think it's closed for the winter months. I'll have to check. If that's the case, then when it reopens this spring for the summer months.

Edit: Seth, could you make this thread a Stickey so it doesn't disappear? Thanks.

Hi guys i will try and find out when my summer leave is tommorow so i can try and put some dates in the air and we can see what dates are best for everyone.
As for where to go we do have many options which depend on how much time and how much money it costs.
We could just vist one place or we could start at Kiel or Whilemlshaven and use the train to get from one to the other. Im sure we could even stop off at Hamburg to take in a vist of the U-boat there as well.
As for time if we planed this over the weekend we could take in say kiel and the memorial and the sights there for a day then enjoy the night life there for one night then move on to Hamburg the next day then on to Whilmlshaven later the same to take in the night there and do the sight seeing the next day.

This is just an idea if anyone has any ideas it would be great to hear them.
The more ideas and options we have to chose from the better it will be.

This sounds like a great trip, but living in america it would cost $$$. I have been to Europe many times, and i love Germany, though i havent been to the northern parts of Germany. I did visit my ancestor';s home town of Ulm and went on some trips up the Rhine and then went to the low countries.

If anyone from the North East is considering going to visit Germany for this trip let me know. I live near Boston, im a poor college student that drives a zamboni at a ice rink to make money. So if i save up enough i may want to go.

O and my dad served in the US Navy and often visited many German and Danish Ports while in the service. He possibly visited some old U-Boat pens/bunkers in his travels. He also helped design and build submarines for EB.

Hi guys, sorry for the lack of progression on the idea of this idea for a summer trip to the U-Boat bases in the north of Germany. But i have been very busy in RL and all time i have had spare i have been testing the new GWX patch.
Well in my last post i said i will try and find out what dates i will be on summer leave but i have hit a wall on that front as it looks like i will be going to canada for a period of time in the summer but i do not for how long. could be one month or four. Dont you just love work. Nothing is ever black and white or easy.
If it is for just the month i belive my summer leave will be around August time. But if i turns out to be the full four months i will be away all summer and there for not able to make the trip. I hope to find out in the next month or so how long i will be away for. Sorry i cant be more helpfull. You just gotta love my work. There motto is last mintue dot com i think.
But if it does turn out to be just the one month and i get my leave in August how does that sound to the guys that said they might intrested?

I total know where your coming from matey i was only 22 when i traveled round the world for a few years. The last thing i wanted back then was to get stuck with a group of boring people who took themselfs to seriously.
What i want to get out of this trip is to see some great history sites and have a great time enjoying the nightlife and hopefully meet some like minded people.
