Well I do agree with the inevitability of it

I just hope they open a limited season.......................when
the time comes I mean how many chances are we actually
going to get to offer armed resistance.

Y'know that's a concept most separationists fail to understand. Canadian provinces would make a pretty sizable voting block in Federal politics. Not only in the electoral college but also in the US Congress and especially in the Senate, where you get two seats for every state (ie: province) regardless of population.

Far from being the serfs the Canucks imagine they would be, in truth with their population, territory and natural resources, they'd be the new big dog on the US political block and have a heckuva lot more say in the actions of this country than they do now.

Is culture really distinguished by national boundaries anymore in this day and age of multiculturalism, and global travel/communications?

Presently I don't see any pressing need for a union of Canada and the US but in 50 years time? Will our decendants wish we had done it back when we had the chance to do so in peace?

5. 2 words Imperial System (I can handle feet, and that's it)

[edit]

And on a more serious note -

If Canada joined the US, I would leave. Don't get me wrong, I love Americans and all, but I have too many misgivings about certain social and political aspects of US public life (nikimcbee's point #1 explains why - yes, I'm a socialist and want to be at least in a non-disdained minority). In Canada I'm at least mostly comfortable.

Canada is its own society, or perhaps its own multiple societies (I'm sure people in the West would agree that they have their own stances on things that are different from those of us in Ontario). I'd rather it stay that way - I genuinely do like Canada the way it is and I've every intention of being a good Canadian citizen as long as it does. :)

(point of curiosity - although I was born and mostly raised in Russia, Canada is the only country whose citizenship/passport I ever held)

Hey! Let's stick an Eagle and Beaver in a cage and have them deathmatch it out over who gets the North American Continent. Seriously, let's just go on having one of the most peaceful borders in the world. I always thought the fact that it is the longest straight line border in the world said a lot about the lack of conflict that has gone on over it. Doomed American Revoluntary war expeditions to Montreal and Quebec City and British counter invasions notwithstanding. Like it says at the Peace Arch at the border near Vancouver BC: Children of a Common Mother. ;)

I don't think it will happen, at least not in our lifetimes. Our two countries have been steadily shifting towards interdependence, but to actually get rid of the border would require a pretty enormous revolution. Deletion of our federal government, switching currencies, learning a new anthem, getting new passports, replacing all our signs with words like "colour" in them... and yes, learning that a zee isn't a zed and what the hell a foot is... :damn:

No harm done. But in all seriousness, It's not a race thing. We (the US) voted and chose to speak English (over German). But I would expect if you immigrate here, you would adopt our language. I have experienced the "ugly American" first hand, and it's embarressing. Unless you're a tourist, please speak english. There is no hate or malice behind this, but the USA is a melting pot and English is our language.

Just for the record, however, the US doesn't have an official language in the way other countries do :p
English is just a de-facto main language. True about 'melting pot', though.

Hello All,

I was actually stationed at NORAD and I was very pleased that the 2 countries could work so well together for a common goal.

As for the U.S. joining Canada or Canada joining the U.S., I'm happy just the way it is.

Just think, with 2 very diverse cultures, it makes both countries good for travel. Why visit another country that is just like this one.

We should just continue working together. Even a joint force is fine but to ask each country to give up even a little of what makes us proud of where we live can not be a good thing either.

Just my 2¢ worth.
