View Full Version : Ennemy Detection factors?

Hey guys,
Just a quick question that I'm not 100% sure about, regarding detection factors with stock 1.4

1.Does moon phases affect detection? (full moon, higher chance of being detected)
2.Does sending out radio reports affect detection?
3.Does 'echoing' for depth affect detection?
thks

1. I don't know
2. I think so
3. Yes

that is a yes on #2 assuming your in range of an airbase.
they will send out an aircraft to search for you shortly
after transmission.

on #1 moon phase no but ambient light conditions yes
you can have periscope up at all stop and remain
undetected but if you allow a searchlignt to fall on
the periscope they detect it.

sonar sounding yes.

1. Yes (because of light condintions)
2. Yes
3. Debatable

:D

So I take it the moon phases/detection is modeled in stock 1.4? Impressive!

No....that's not what I meant :nope:

It is probably easier to get spotted in lighter conditions...however, I don't think the game takes this into account because your lookouts have the same 'cat like' vision during darkness as they have in daytime.

jimbuna,
why "debatable" for number 3? I was under the impression that while a straight downwards sonar ping has limited detection range , if you are in the immediate vicinity (say 2km) of a warship and try to find depth under keel you are broadcasting a loud "more Wasserbomben please":dead::dead::dead:
Could you please expand on this?

Ok moon phase is not modeled, but just the moon in general yes (sub is more detectable if there's a moon)?

Yes, the bigger the phase of the moon the easier it is for escorts to spot you. I remember in the old Aces of the Deep you could circumvent this a bit by surfacing with the moon on one side of the convoy and you on the other...harder for them to spot you than you and the moon backlighting you on the same side of the convoy. SH3 only models the ambient light.

One thing I've wondered. Let's say there's a full moon in the sky but the clouds are completely overcast. Does SH3 take into account the overcast nature of the sky or does the code see "Full Moon" and go only by that? :hmm:

To the best of my knowledge nobody has yet been able to give a definitive answer as to whether the depth under keel sounding is detectable by ships :nope:
IMHO I believe it should be :yep:

Only today I was diving, trying to evade a destroyer. I realised I was in fairly shallow water and "pinged" to see how deep it was. The little submarine(the noise detector-goes red when you're in trouble)went red and the destroyer made a bee line for me.

I say that I was about 2k away from him and fortunatly I did manage to shrug him off.

Good job I did ping, there was only about 40m under me:oops:

Your 'noise detector' is not 100% accurate in determining whether or not you have been detected :nope: It is only a helpful indicator to tell you that your emitting a level of noise that may be detectable to others. :yep:

What I donīt get is how the h*ll merchants can detect me at 13-15 km.
I get that calm seas on a bright sunny day makes you more visable, but at 15 km!!
I mean...itīs hard for me to spot them.

Yes, but I think his point is that it turned red as soon as he echoed for depth. Plus he says the destroyer went straight for him, which means that echoing seems to have a clear relation with an increase probability of detection.

only definate way to find out.... get in the middle of a convoy at pd depth then ping like crazy and see what the dds do:o

How late in the war are you? If you're being detected at 13-15 km so easily maybe they have radar?

Sounds easy enough, I'll just load up a mission and try it. But looking at the answers it looks like 'echoing' makes alot of noise. :ping:
