i had to start a new career coz id been killed on patrol two. so i started in Wilhelshaven in 1939 oct. after a rather sucessful patrol 20k of shipping sunk i found myself with 1 bow fish left and 2 aft fish. i was on my way home off the west coast of Ireland and i got a report of a warship that was on the same course as me heading in my direction, it was a long way off at least a good whole grid away but i decided to see what it was....
well the weather was apalling i was going down to 10m on the waves and vis was really poor so i dived,
i was down at pd depth and got a contact then another and another, as they got closer i could ID most of them, a few hunt 1, southampton class and low and behold the Rodney. as luck would have it it was the furthest ship away i was almost crying coz i knew 1 fish wouldnt stop her but what the hell. i could get no closer than 3000m but let loose my last fish at the Rodney, dived to 80m (as far as i could go) got the report that topedo hit. only 1 DD came loocking for me but managed to evade and she quickly returned to the convoy.
then i noticed a contact not moving so i came to pd depth to see what it was and i was so surprised to see the Rodney dead in the water listing heavily!!! i must have hit her engine room and flooded it. after the convoy had long gone i lined myself up for my last 2 aft fish. 1 went to her keel and the other to her ammo compartment, the first one didnt put her down and i was praying the second would and it did she went up like a firework display and became fish food. my missus fell out with me coz i was dancing around the living room like a prat :rotfl: so all in all after 54k tons of shipping a good patrol. got no medals though :stare: i think i was very very lucky that 1 fish stopped her in her tracks doubt that will happen again
