View Full Version : Identify flags...

I find myself needing to get extremely close to ships to be able to clearly see their flags. I had been using GWX which increased the zoom a little on the periscope, but now I am giving NYGM 2.4 a go and I am fairly sure it does not zoom it more. (I may be wrong though.)
So I was curious, what kind of distance would real u boats be able to clearly identify the flags on ships? Obviously some stand out more than others, but still.
Thanks for your replies. :yep:

I imagine it would probably be pretty close to what these mods have it modelled as. In everything I read, U-boats regularly shot from distances of <500m, so I imagine they'd have to be pretty close to get an ID on the ship. Most likely around 1500 to 2000m.

I noticed an error on the italian merchants flags(with GWX):
This one is the actual italian flag (not correct for the italian merchants in GWX):

This is what I found http://www.geocities.com/capitolhill/9226/navy.html
'The former Royal Insignia of Savoy Kings was replaced, since November 9, 1947, by this one that represents the four ancient Italian maritime republics Venice, Genoa, Amalfi and Pisa it is surmounted by the "Corona Rostrata" the Republican Crown with rostrums. The insignia is put in the middle of the national flag and it differs from the one of the Italian merchant Navy because it has the Corona Rostrata and the S.Marco lion has the book closed, a sword in the hand and the tail raised up. '
And here are the flags

I don't worry too much about flags. In GWX, it's the lights, which show even in daytime. A ship not showing lights . . .kaboom, down she goes. The other day I was stooging around Ponta Delgado. Several ships with lights were in and outside the harbour. Among the lighties sat a darkened merchant. Even though she was in neutral waters, I sent a gutt morninckz torpedo. :arrgh!:

But it happens to meet a darkened neutral ship. Yestarday I sank a darkened US tanker with my deck gun (he was running away at 15 knts - no chances to prepare to torpedo hit), and it's July 40. I noticed the flag when she was sinking.
It was a great feeling to have the first US ship sunk, but it was counted as a neutral and renown points taken. :)

Actually it's what we intend to, isn't it? First we take Manhattan, then we take Berli... Erm... Ups... Not that song. So... First we take Manhattan, then we take Beijing! Our Untersee Wunderwaffe will let us take Atlantida, too. Soon, you'll see that for sure.

Sure, late in the war just about everyone is your enemy. But early on, correctly identifying ships flags is important.
