Yep I just had to see it again ( after the um-teenth time ;) )
cranked up the family theater sound system ( 5.1 dolby ) and was again blown away by the best sub movie ever. :yep:

My edition is the 'directors Cut' which is 209 minutes long ( about 3 1/2 hours ) and I love it. I know that a bunch of you here have seen it but is there anyone in the crowd that hasn't ?
Ok now back to SHIII. :D

Yes, this version is also my favorite. Awesome, awesome movie. Without a doubt it's the u-boat movie; nothing else even comes remotely close to its characterization, attention to detail and story telling. A very good movie all around; even if you don't like submarines you'll like this movie. Highly recommended. :yep:

Yep, wonderful movie.
While on the topic of sub movies though, I watched The Enemy Below a month ago. Not quite like Das Boot but still a good movie. My wife watched it with me and she thought it was really quite good (and she generally hates watching my war stuff!). If you see it at the video store, rent it out for a Sunday afternoon.

Get the uncut version and watch it some Saturday/Sunday (at 5 hours long, you pretty much make a day of it!)
The sound quality isn't quite as good, but it more than makes up for it with the added scenes. You actually get to see Ullman's girlfriend (the one who's pregnant and Werner volunteers to take his love letters ashore) and it's got more Thomsen, amongst other nice additions.

Elder Pirate, I have just bought a copy as well. :D
Do you know if it is possible to have the music while running the sub, on the gramaphone perhaps? I looked at the file in the gramaphone folder, but that isn't the same as the music you hear when the film is running I think, which is the bit I want.
Agreed!! Das Boot all the way baby! I owe both version the Remastered and the long Tv edition.

The best Das Boot treat you can give yourself is reading the book . I'd seen the film first and own the DVD, but reading the book surpassed even that experience. It also makes you realise just how good a book->movie conversion it is. Possibly the best I've ever come across....

Actually I prefer the movie to the book, and that is rare. However there's another very good submarine book=>movie conversion: Hunt For Red October. Apart from a few small things they took out of the movie to make it shorter ...
In any case. I never forgave the Academy that Das Boot didn't get any of the Oscars it was nominated for AND that it wasn't even nominated for best foreign language movie that year. :-(

Maybe they've got something against German-made war films? Der Untergang (aka Downfall) was nominated yet failed to win and I thought that was an outstanding film too. I haven't seen the Spanish film that did win, though, so I can't say if it is genuinely better or not...:88)

What is really interesting about Das Boot(I have the directors cut) is that there really is no decernible plot to speak of but it grabs and holds your attention for over 3 hours. Now that is a darn good movie to do that. What really sucks is the boys make it through all the crap on patrol and bite the bullet in their own port:o. Man what a bummer because after 3 hours watching the crew you kind of find they are likable characters.

Possibly ... Over the years I have also come to the conclusion that rarely the best films win. How else do you think does a mediocre movie like "Titanic" could've won so many Oscars. For a movie based on an historic event it's pretty unrealistic :) Maybe it's just my taste in movies. After all I'm an old European, and we're all backward and different (no I haven't forgiven Rumsfeld either) :rotfl:

I aslo prefer the movie to the book. The english translation of the book is almost unreadable to me. I heard there were two versions out there and I guess I have the wrong one. Makes me wonder how the translator ever passed his english class.
Nevertheless, I have learned more about life onboard U-boats from the Das Boot book, then from any other book on this subject.
And of course, if you can read German, reading the original must be amazing!

Short version, huh? Yeah, I know the theatrical release was only about 150 minutes, but if you haven't seen the 292-minute uncut version you're really missing out.
I have a copy of the book that I really enjoyed. There are a couple of scenes that were left out of the movie, and probably for the best simply because they are so powerful.

I've got an official version with Polish subtitles. Some examples of a genuine translation follow:
All compartments report damage! -- All compartments damaged!
Contact closing fast. -- Contact was closed [i.e. opposite to 'open'] fast.
When the rudder breaks on one of those old tenders there's nothing to do but pray. -- When our rudder breaks by hitting one of those old tenders there's nothing to do but pray.
They're spitting in the wrong direction. -- They are spliting! They sail in the wrong direction!
We really smashed them. Did you hear those bulkheads burst? -- We hit them bad! Their nails were breaking!
And so on... whole the film is translated like that. That can really make one mad. :|

From what I understand you have to turn off the sim's background music in order to hear gramaphone music. I never listen ( if I have a choice ) to a Sim/Game background music ( but I do listen to the Sims gramaphone music ) for not only does it disturb your concentration of the Sim/game but at that time the earth never had music piped in as it seems to be today, every body carries their own music 24/7. ;)
Can you imagine in the 1940's on a U-Boot the Kaleun prays to God " Please lord will you kindly turn off that music, the British might hear it." :rotfl:

The original theatrical version is 2-1/2 hours long.
The Director's Cut is 3-1/2 hours, and has a lot more scenes of the boredom, plus a great opening sequence before the night club scenes.
The "Original, Uncut (or miniseries) Version" is 5 hours long, has scenes with Ullmann and his girlfriend, scenes of the 'Old Man' himself starting to show the strain and a very hot discussion about rescuing the British survivors that isn't in either of the shorter versions. Plus a whole lot more about the boredom and some more about the storm, plus two or three more crash-dive sequences and more good stuff.

I bought the 5-hour uncut version day before yesterday - it is outstanding. Only downside is the print they used to make the DVD isn't of the best quality - I believe the director's cut has been remastered. But the uncut version can't be beat for just giving more of a great film.
I didn't even know there was a book, so thanks for that.
BTW, after watching it yesterday I rushed out and picked up SH3. Still floundering about in the Academy, and now flopping like a fish on a dock here in these forums.

There is none....Das Boot is the best we will get in this life time. For me, that is just fine as Das Boot is the finest representation of the uboat and what it was used for in WW2. Sure, it does not go into BDU, Doenitz and strategy but the story line is really about the men and their boats. This storyline is done very well.

This too is a good movie. To bad the time it was made that the CG effects was not around. The actors were great as well. What separates this movie from Das Boot is watching Das Boot with German speaking and subtitles brings it all together. If you watch it with English dubbing, it kind of looses that realism and punch of the situation that they were put into. As far as drama that grabs you, holding your attention, Das Boot does it for me. Perhaps because The Enemy Below was a Hollywood creation where as Das Boot a European creation. I find the mind set of directers in comparison is quite different thus providing a different feel to movies. All in all, these two movies are in my stack of movies. I also have Run Silent, Run Deep. Although in the PTO, this too is a good movie with great actors. Again, if CG effects were part of this movie, it would have been better. If you do get a chance to watch Run Silent Run Deep, watch for the strings pulling the torpedos and submarines under the water. It is quite comical but it was all they had at the time.

Das Boot with German speaking and subtitles brings it all together. Definitely! No other way to watch it (well there is, German with no subtitles).
Here's a bit of triva: Originally filmed in German, all of the major actors could speak English. When the movie was dubbed into English for USA and UK distribution, all of the principal actors actually dubbed their own voices into English.
Its a annoying thing really.
Whenever one dubb's a movie in whatever language it looses it's puch.

I believe the one is digitally remastered and the second set of DVD is also remastered but adds more content that was omitted from the first remastered DVD. Three movies in all, original, digitally remastered with more content and digitally remastered and even more content. At least this is what I believe has happened.
The only thing I didn't like about Das Boot was that crappy '80s music that

I don't understand why everyone talks about the so called directors cut. Has no one heard about the TV-version (5 1/2 hours) ?? That is the version everone should watch. I bought it when it was re-relased in Germany (2004).
Albeit controversial, the Novel by Lothar Günther Buchheim is one of the best novels about WWII. I have read it at least five times.
But watch out: the language is rough! A good example is when he phantasizes about different shapes of the female sexual organ .. a dozen or so :)
I also learned some words from him: "Lochschwager" , "Fotzenneid" , "Pint" , .. and have used them ever since ..

Das Boot didn't have CGI either, just models.

The other thing that's funny in Run Silent, Run Deep is the difference between the action scenes, which use models, and the non-action sequences with a real sub. You can really spot the difference between the way the water reacts with a submarine weighing several hundred tons and a model weighing a few pounds. No foam.
That to me is one of two places where Das Boot fails: the fact that the water reaction shows that the boat at sea is just a model. CGI might have helped there as well.
My vote for early u-boat movie: U-boote Westvarts.

I had known about the models for Das Boot and no CG around. If I'm not mistaken they sold one of the models. I believe it was just one of the conning towers used for close ups. A few guys throwing buckets of water off screen for effect;) But yes, scale of water compaired to model was off. Not quite as bad as the old Godzilla movies:o . I will have to watch Run Silent Run Deep again because I did not realize there was a few shots with the real deal. I guess they did that pretty well. You can't miss those strings though LOL!

During a production commentary, I recall Wolfgang Petersen saying he felt using a 1/6th scale model (35 foot) and filming at 55 frames per second was the best compromise for a realistic wave effect against the sub's hull. Another bit of trivia: the human figures on the above model were modified Barbie dolls.

I have the full length "uncut" version but I swear I saw footage in the theatrical release years ago I didn't see in the supposedly "uncut" version. I could be mixing my movies up here as it was a very long time ago, but I remember a scene where the Old Man gets a pair of socks made of human hair, and he knows exactly what that means. Also, I recall the Chief spending a lot more time in the battery compartment, with the fumes really hurting his eyes, and the bravery it took to go back in there.
So I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "full" version, just shorter and longer cuts with different variations of the million+ feet of film they shot.
I wasn't very happy with the print quality of the "uncut" version either.

They need to sell Kaleun Barbie! Hell, they got every other kind of Barbie.

I wasn't very happy with the print quality of the "uncut" version either. Even though I have three different versions already (hey, I love the film), I have room for yet another Das Boot, one that has received the Criterion Treatment. A full, uncut Criterion Collection Das Boot release. Now that would be the ultimate version.
Psst, Criteron -- are you listening?

I have the full length "uncut" version but I swear I saw footage in the theatrical release years ago I didn't see in the supposedly "uncut" version. I could be mixing my movies up here as it was a very long time ago, but I remember a scene where the Old Man gets a pair of socks made of human hair, and he knows exactly what that means. Also, I recall the Chief spending a lot more time in the battery compartment, with the fumes really hurting his eyes, and the bravery it took to go back in there.

I don't recall the scenes you describe, but the shortest (theatrical) version is the only one which has the Chief say to Lt. Werner "And here comes the speech", and after the Captain says "Now men, all clear?" the Chief says "Some speech, huh?"
That sequence is not in any of the longer versions, and I'm still wondering why.

That sequence is not in any of the longer versions, and I'm still wondering why. Very observant. It's not on the director's cut or the full length Uncut release. I think it's apparent we've watched this fine film too many times. Err wait, no...no, I don't think that's possible. Actually, I don't think I'll ever tire of this film.

I head there is or will be an version in a Metal DVD Box that has the whole deal in Tommie-land.

You're going to love it. I have both the director's cut and the uncut version. The long version definately adds a lot to the story.
I love nitpicking through the versions of films that one prefers. Its really astounding how some scenes that are removed add so much character. Like for christmas I got the complete Apocalypse Now with all the deleted scenes and the Redux version. Its amazing what interesting stuff isn't included. Like theres this special feature of a full 17 minutes of Marlon Brando in Colonel Kurtz's character reading The Hollow Men. You get into a trance listening to that.

Yes well what an all time classic, sheer brilliance from Wolfgang Petersen. I have the mini series, this is the full version, the directors cut is great of course but i beleive their is 25mins missing when u-96 becomes stuck on the bottom of the Gibraltar straits....worth watching as the intensity just flows for almost half an hour!
Heres to Thompsen!!!!

Thanks, but I can't claim it. There have been Das Boot threads here at Subsim ever since I've been here (and that's going on five years now), and this was actually brought up by someone else a long time ago.

Sailor Steve,
I have a copy of the theatrical release and always wondered why that scene about the speech was not included in the long version. It does add to the character development between both Werner and the IL. They seem to have developed a repoire with each other before the bar scene.

That would be almost perfect - but what I want is the Criterion full length EXTENDED edition, that includes even more of the million+ feet of film that they shot. Apparently there are vast reserves of film not even in the "full length" version.

The Criterion Collection of DVDs usually include a lot of snazzy extras and digital remastering of the film and sound. It would be absolutely awesome if they did that with the extended version of Das Boot.
Maybe we can get an email campaign together? Here's the address for film suggestions: mulvaney@criterionco.com
EDIT: Ive emailed them and will let you know if I get a response.

Maybe we can get an email campaign together? Hey, I'd love nothing more than to see this DVD released. I emailed Criterion about this over three years ago. At that time I received a generic script generated response. Hopefully we'll have better luck this time around. I have a decent collection of films by them, and when compared with standard studio releases, well, there's no comparison. They truly do outstanding work, and the technology they employ continually improves.

Well I've just watched all 5 hours of Das Boot and so has my girlfriend. Her actual words were "I wasn't expecting to enjoy this at all it being a war film, but I was totally gripped from start to finish". And of course the end got her too - but that's the point isn't it ?
Fantasic film, I so very glad I got a copy!

Hmm!! And I was thinking about what to rent to watch today! I haven't watched "Das Boot" for quite sometime now and I think the time has come to watch it one more time. And if I am not mistaken the video store has recently brought in the Director's Cut version... I am off to the video store as soon as my team kicks some yellow ass tonight in the Greek League :)) Maybe put 2 direct hits into Aris' (the hated rivals) nets :)))
