Or I just GOTTA go with one of the supa-modz ???
Any mods that do not require the 1.4b patch ???
Any mods that simply enhance graphics ???
Thanks.

The only reason to play stock (even a patched up version of stock), is if SH3 runs slow on your computer, or long(er) load times get on your nerves.
Otherwise, not much of a reason to.

If you can run it, GWX is a very good mod. Great graphics, I would not go back to the stock version.

No, but it does help give a feel for the amazing amount of changes that have been made in the last two years.
Run stock until you get bored that should be about a week then go all the way with GWX.
I just like to add since I switched to GWX my load up time is shorter and no time too make two cups of coffee. ;)

I though it was only about the realism factor.

If it takes that long.:rotfl:
Stock gives you more easy targets. It's ok as a training device before things get serious in GWX.

Enchances? More like... blows out of the water :arrgh!:
GWX is an amazing visual overhaul. Both in terms of overall look/feel and in terms of features (just look at the list of ships).
Do NOT miss the super-mods. It's like playing the game at a fraction of its true potential, both for good looks and good game.

I'm still playing around with single mission mode (haven't even started the career one yet), replaying my favourite missions where of course the prey is easy to bite into. And that is because I still don't have full understanding of the TDC.

I totally agree. If you just go straight to GWX you`ll never appreciate the total sickness of SH3 modding. I go for the odd vanilla patrol pretty much every time I reinstall the game, just for the laughs.
Edit: Welcome to SubSim, Albert!

So it looks like GWX is the one I should go for - do the other supa-modz even measure up ??? Or they're just different ??? How about in terms of graphics factor - I admit that I'm a bit of a "graphics whore"...I saw this term used here before - hahahhaha... thanks for all the replies...

Check the GWX manual out:

I can't comment on the others but I believe NYGM players are at 100% realism only.

Try GWX mate. It's a totally new experience. It's the way the game should have been in the first place.:yep:

If you're a "graphics whore", definitely yes. :p
If you're more into difficulty, you may consider NYGM, but nothing beats the overall design effort on GWX.

Quoted for truth.

I absolutely, completely 100% disagree. Grey Wolves has always had the stigma of being an "eye candy" mod, but that's completely changed in the latest version, GWX.

Small confession, ive often thought about taking all the fixes and making, what could essentually be patch 1.5. But im too lazy and nobody would use it anyway.

To the OP, or you can go half way between stock and a super-mod by simply adding a few yourself. For example I'm using improved convoys, more realistic sensors, Leigh Lights, a bunch of eye candy mods ( moon, sky, etc..), and a few others.
edit: Why would you want mods that do not require 1.4b patch!? Needless to say you must patch SHIII to 1.4b, for all it's improvements.

i personally would try out stock sh3 for a few weeks just to get a feel for the game, then install GWX with SH3commander 2.7. then you can really appreciate the changes that have been made

I played stock for a year before I got Grey Wolves 1.1a. and had that for 5-6 months before GWX.
The stock is a good way to get a feel of the game before you start with GWX, NYGM. Dont bother with IuB or RuB because they wher TedyBar's (and Kpt. Lehmann's ?) first mods.

I played the stock SHIII for 3 months after itīs release march-05.
Then I came back to the game just before x-mas -06.
Think I played at least 35 patrols without any crew lost or damage to the boat.
Heck....I donīt even think I met a destroyer until mid-43.
My point is that the stock game is far to easy.
After reading a lot of posts here about GWX I decided to install that mod and SH-Commander.
Iīm very happy I did. It looks alot nicer, more different ships to sink and a bigger challenge with all the tuff DDīs and airplanes.

Right! Play a few times with the Stock one, just so you can really compare what kind of improvment the modders have done to the game, once you install NYGM or GWX...or both!:rock:

Im willing to bet, i could take the stock game, and make it HARDER then GWX. :smug:
edit: acutally ive always had the odd notion to make a mod compilation that alters stock the most dramatically with the smallest filesize of a mod release. Adding no new units, and using no graphics. But as ive said, nobody plays stock, waste of time. lol

The only reason i can think of to play stock is to pass the training missions. With gwx and nygm passing the gunnery, torpedo, and flak training missions is either very difficult or pretty much impossible
training missions
What's that?
Are yes it's all coming back to me now. ;)
Why would he bother with the Naval Academy!
NYGM is not based on renown.

SH3Commander - is everyone using this with their GWX ??? looks like this is just some nice add on for the medals and officer faces etc. ???

SH3Cmd and SH3Gen are a MUST in every version of SH3, and that includes GW/NYGM and GWX.:yep:

It does a lot more than that. Randomizes starting crew and experience, you can start in any flotilla in any month/year with any historically correct boat, you can fix time compression settings, you can create career files, it simulates crew transfers, sabotage/malfunctions....its a must!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: if I could only choose one mod or tool at all it would be SH3 Commander before any of the greatest mods. It's that important, as far as I'm concerned. Then I'd choose...

SH3Commander is probably the single best universal mod ever made
There is so much more it adds to ANY version of the game
Even now it is under used

In my view I would play the vanilla version through a few patrols. Get a feel for what is missing and what would be good to add. Generally get a feel for using torps and navigation. Then load in GWX so you know for sure what these guys have done with SH3 is nothing short of a masterpiece:up:. At this point you become a mod junkie looking to score more and more. Beating up the GWX team to make more and create more. Then and only then will you truly appreciate the guys that mod and made this game whole:rock:
