It's a sub already used in WWII; they're improved Gatos.

No it's rather old;) Balao was an improved Gato class, while the Tench class was an improved Balao class. However some of these subs were in surface until the '60s.
I'm sure somebody else has better knowledge concerning that matter.:up:
Balao class subs indeed saw action in WWII, as they were first built and commissioned in 1942 (although a few weren't commissioned until after the war.:know: The USS Archerfish, the sub which sank the Shinano in 1944, was from this class for example. They were indeed still in existence in the 1960s, but most had been decommissioned to reserve and most of the class were discarded during that decade and into the 1970s.
