hello Community.tis me, paws, only now I have a new ID, as you can see, and my own Avatar ( she is prettier than me). I took the advice of Albrecht as I felt it was misleading for me to have the masculine avatar that comes with the rank, and I wanted a name that gives a clue to my gender so no-one chats with me thinking I am a lad and then gets embarrassed when they realise I am not.

I am in the third single mission and am gently challenged as to how to knock out the second attack boat that comes for me ( the first one I nobbled with a bows-on hit the first try, wowee!). That is not what I want advice on however - I will find out how to do it, eventually, I expect.

The snorkel - what is it for? I wondered if it is to get fresh air in, when the fumes are getting too strong for the crew to live comfortably.

Also there is a little wooden-looking triangle aerial thingy on the deck, looks like it could be good for drying socks on when topside, :rotfl:but I am sure that it has a much more serious use than that - sonar or summat?

thanks as ever :)

hi the snorkel is used underwater so you can use the diesel engines and save the batteries. you raise the snorkel so the diesel engine can "breath"

The snorkel. Possibly the best bit of kit your boat can have. Raising this will allow you to run your diesel engines whilst submurged. And yes it will also give the crew fresh air.

Wooden "Triangle thingy", sounds like you now have a radar detector, alerting you to the presense of radar equiped allied vessels and aircraft.

Can't help you with the single missions I only play careers, sorry.

Nice black and tan wolf by the way, she looks very similar to mine.

It's an air breathing device which allows the Diesel engines to "breath" under water, with this equipment you can do about 12-13 knots underwater with the IXC whilst charging your batteries

The snorkel is a device added to submarines to keep you alive for a few more days in post 1943 WWII, provided you haven't bit the dust (?bit the water?) before that.
I have never lived long enough to get one.

I would like to have this device on my VIIB, but so far I've not gotten far enough into a carrer (time line).
When the device is not available the Snorkle Depth option should be greyed out imo.

Why be different??

The Snorkel gives your diesels air that they need to run. But beware, if your snorkel gets underwater while you are running the diesels, all air will be sucked out of the boat reeeaally quickly. Too bad this isnt modeled in SHIII, tho.

Cool! The U-boat.net page lists all the boats that actually had them. Of course that means that anal-retentive Steve won't take one unless his boat has the right number.:dead:

In my Med campaign I used that renown stuff for the first time to buy a snorkel. I too think it’s the best tool for any u-boat. But in the Med’s clear waters it seems that enemy’s planes can still spot my boat fairly easy.
and oh yeah,,,,,,,,,great looking dog there

Icegrog, Irish, the sub comes equipped with the snorkel in the third single mission. The comment made by Icegrog about clear water raises another question I have.

When I go into freeview and then want to dive in and find the sub when it is deep the water, everything is so black I can't ever find it and have to go back to interior view. Is this because the water is naturally dark or dirty in the Atlantic or do I need to tweak my controls a bit?

Dowly, I have read something about that - mens ears popping - and what about them, they need air too. Subs can be dangerous places from inside, as well as outside it seems.

And something else I have learned, though it may not be the same for everyone, but I feel sad when a great ship goes down after I have hit it, not victorious at all. Perhaps it is the music in the background...

If you are using SH3commander you can adjust the water density
The Atlantic wont be crystal clear if you go deep anyway
If your not using SH3commander - why not !!!! lol

Wait till you have endured a long DC session and taken a battering
Then you wont feel so sad when they go down

Irish, I had better be female with a name like that I think, but tuck your fantasies away 'cos Racquel Welsh I ain't .

I checked, after I came on here because I thought I might be encroaching on verboten male territory, and I found at least two, maybe three places on the web where a nation's 'first lady submariner' had been appointed. One lady was even in charge of the boat if I recall correctly. There, that's girl for you, so I feel ladies have a legitimate place here now. Mind you, I used to drive young sailors about when the Mercury communications camp was still open, including girls, and a right giggly lot they ( the girls!) seemed to be - but submariners... well, breed apart I reckon.

reallydedpoet are you saying you do not like my dawg?:hmm:

ahh, hello again bigboy tis me, paws, in a new ID so folks know I am 'girl', forewarned I should say. Thank you for your advice ( again) SH3Commander... I have a folder on my desktop with something you told me about - oh no, that was the update for Greywolf I think - done that. I don't think I am using SH3Commander. Thought I had all the goodies already. I will find out about it.

so the sadness goes away you say, and it is only a game? - well, yeah, I guess that it so, but...it must be the music.

Sailor Steve... Cool man..;)

Ducimus , this sounds like a sombre warning.....:o
