View Full Version : Crash to blue screen on exit from GWX

My crashes to blue screen upon exit from GWX have continued even though I've tried every imaginable thing to correct.
The problem seems to be with the ATI driver and yes I have the latest driver update from Toshiba on the Mobility Radeon 9000 display driver. And ATI doesn't offer any support on laptop chips and drivers. And Toshiba is not very helpful either.
Note: my computer funtions normally in every orther way except exiting from GWX. The crash to blue screen and reboot doesn't really bother me; it's that sometimes the sound gets corrupted and I have to do a restore to correct. And once I had some corrupted files in the SH3 folder in My Documents and I lost a game save. But, what really worries me is that something much worse may happen in the future do to the frequency of the crashes.
Does anyone else running Grey Wolves or GWX have this problem?
Does anyone running NYGM mod have this problem?
Might switching to NYGM cure this problem? Any comments on this.

Hmm it doesn't sound very good. As an IT guy, I can say with 100% confidence that whatever is going on, its NOT SH3/GWX's fault. Something they are doing may be bringing on the symptoms you are seeing, but its not a fault with SH3.
Sorry, I can't see an easy answer for this one. All I can suggest is re-install all your drivers (video and sound), re-install the latest DirectX update, and re-install XP service pack 2. If none of that works, re-install windows. If that doesn't work you either have a hardware problem, or its a problem with the toshiba drivers...
either way hassle them and see what happens.

I use DriversHQ to help with updated hardware you might give that a try. It will scan you computer and let you know whats out of date or needs to be updated. Give it a try. Good Luck:ping:

Thanks Airwolf for your suggestion.
The only drivers it pick up on as being out of date are the mouse, ethernet and the Realtek AC97 audio. Thus, the ATI display driver was okay.
I reloaded the latest audio driver from Toshiba's support site and DriversHQ still says it needs to be updated.
Anymore suggestions.

I am also running SH3 NYGM and GWX on a Toshiba Satellite with ATI Mobility Radeon 9600. I never updated my drivers since 2 years I have it and everythign runs fine. I understand this won't help you but just wanted to give the info that it might not be a GWX related issue.

Are we talking about the BSOD here? If so there is usually an error code listed, copy this down and goto the windows support website and search out the code. It will probably come back with some generic hardware error/conflict, but you never know.
I notice you have Realtek AC97 audio (onboard sound card), I had very similar problems to yours when I updated my AC97 drivers (before a new pci sound card), it almost seems that when these drivers are updated there are remnants of the old ones left over and this causes a conflict. I have to say the only way I managed to clear this problem was a windows reformat & install:shifty:. At a last resort I purchased a PCI sound card, they're not expensive now and you wouldn't believe the improvement in performance.

I've had problems with my MSI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series drivers with SH3, so I downloaded Omega Drivers.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I've done a major restore to November 1st (farthest back that I could go) and hope this is before the problem began. I believe my problem was cause by a crash or something to do with FSautoStart in late November or early December.
So far some of the little quirks or symtoms have disappeared but I will not know the outcome for sure until I reinstall GWX which I probably will do this evening.

I didn't know you were using FSautostart.:damn:. One of the settings in FSauto allows you to end all running process's (or somthing like that). I used FSauto in this manner while still using Realtek AC97 audio and it totally corrupted my drivers/program, not on the first couple of uses but soon after. Giving me erratic audio & unexplained BSOD's.
I hope the system restore works for you, it didn't for me. The only thing that fixed it was a complete system format and reinstall.
Good Luck.

GWX and SH3 Commander installed. Began 1st patrol by way of Kiel Canal. Now heading west toward England on September 2nd.
First save and exit did okay, no crashes so far.

FSautostart works fine here, less troubles with it than without it. I just stops processes.
On the Omega drivers I read that the core drivers are just ATI, so it is a placebo.
but I can be wrong in this info.

On top of running SH3 on a Toshiba Satellite, I am also using FS Autostart since a long time for all my games, using the "Stop and Restart" function for programs and services. Although I also have a Realtek AC 97 audio, I never until now had any problem at all.
FS Autostart leaves you the decision on what programs/services you want to stop/restart.

Second exit from game went off without a crash. So far, so good!
U-4 crusing northwest of the Netherlands at 11am, Sept. 4, 1939. Spot a small British merchant heading southeast. Submerge and plot intercept course for underwater attack. Fire one torpedo at target traveling 9 knots, 800 meters distance. Hit amidship, target sinks!
I've played SH3 (stock, Grey Wolves, and now GWX) for almost 2 years and until last December, I've never had a crash to blue screen. I began using FsautoStart in November 2006 and I recall one day in early December having a problem or a glitch or something. It happened after I tried turning off a couple of extra processes. From then on I had intermittent crashes to blue screen upon exit.
My restore to November 1, 2006 may have cured the problem. Hope so, mabe a little early to celebrate.

Well, the third exit from game resulted in another crash to blue screen just as befoe.
So, I just reinstalled the original Grey Wolves which I played for many months without a problem. If it crashes, it's my computer and I'll reformat my harddrive and hope that cures the problem. If the original Grey Wolves does not crash, then it has to be something in the new GWX that is in conflict with my computer.
Note: first exit from Grey Wolves, no problem! Too early to celebrate!
