I need some opinions from you guys (who better to ask) as I'm thinking of buying a few more submarine movies. Here's what I have so far:

Das Boot (Directors Cut and Uncut)
K-19 The Widowmaker Special Edition
Down Periscope
We Dive at Dawn
Above Us The Waves

Any ideas? I'd prefer something in colour first, and if anyone says *whisper*U-571*whisper* I'll castrate them. :arrgh!:

Sailor Steve, I like your selection of movies, but doesn't your last statement rule out Ice Station Zebra which is in your list? I know in reality that the sub used in the film was an old diesel electric (USS Ronquil) and not a nuclear boat, but the film portrays it as a modern (1960s) sub.

My selection would include yours plus:
Hunt for Red October
Crimson Tide
K19 The Widowmaker
Hostle Waters

Basically the modern sub films you dislike.

Saw this old classic flick today and it reminded me of the cold war in the 1960's. The boat in the movie seemed to be an old Skate class attack sub and showed seemingly realistic under ice ops...at least for 1968. The inside shots seemed to be accurate and reminded me of my visit on the Nautilus. However, the noise coming from the engineering spaces was deafining, at least in the movie and led the way to much quieter boats. Can any of you sub veterans tell me what "injection temperature" means or was it a goof like the 1260' deep dive. Anyway, it makes for a good afternoon star studded flick. :ping:

My all time sub movie favorite is "Das Boot" in the Uncut TV Edition. "Hunt for Red Octobre" is also very funny. It covers almost every aspect of modern naval Warfare, that u can play in Dangerous Waters. I always laugh when Thompson saves the day, bringing Dallas into the Path of Red Octobre and the incoming fish. The torpedo follows Dallas- is distracted by the two countermeasures, still active and home in to the Akula Class Sub. Try this whole tactic in Sub Command/ Dangerous Waters. It won't NEVER work:rotfl: But its very cool to watch all over again. Its also funny, that they seem to use a waterfall typ sonar on Red Octobre. Jones probably brings some spare parts from Dallas along;)
Crimson Tide isn't bad either. Great acting between Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington.

I will probably be keel hauled for posting this but my list is

1. K19 The actual experiences of the Hotel 1 was a bit less dramatic than the movie, but it still was a heroic crew in what they did,
2. Das Boot (perhaps this is second because I have seen it way too many times)
3. Enemy below:up:

For entertainment purposes I like Destination Tokyo with Cary Grant. It is a true propaganda movie and not all that realistic but not all that bad either.

I am very happy to see that no one put "Crash Dive" on their list. More of a love triangle love story then a sub story <blach>

Torpedo Run with Glenn Ford is not bad. A pretty dramatic scene when he has to sink the Japanese transport carrying his wife and children.

I did not care for "Grey Lady Down" To me it was just another in the "Airport" disaster series with a sub.

I need to get a copy of "Torpedo Alley" and "We dive at dawn" for my sub library.

I've been looking for Morning Departure for ages...it's a very good film!

It's available on DVD, I recently rented a copy from Blockbusters.

John Mills at his stiff upper lip British best while Richard Attenbough plays the snivelling coward to perfection.

Quick overview :- Set just after the war, a British sub meets a drifting mine. Badly damaged and stuck on the bottom with more crew left alive than they have undamaged escape sets for.

The movie public just doesn't get many WW2 submarine movies to watch.
Likewise with WW2 warship movies. It would be nice to see more of all of
these in future movies. I see that they are even starting to make remakes
of older westerns. Maybe this remake of older movies will spill over to WW2

that being said I have seen the directors cut- about 2/12 hours and the full version- 6 plus hours. No comparison in my mind -the six hours version adds all the feelings and emotions (including outright boredoom at times) of life on a sub. In fact i was quite dissaapointed in the "shorter" version having watched the longer version first.

definelty needs to be seen with German language and English subtitles-
english dubbing is good but really draws away the realism

also-surround sound with bass all the way up makes the DD attacks really scare the beejesus out of you

my two cents anyway

Where do people get these numbers from? The theatrical release was 2 1/2 hours, the Director's Cut is 3 1/2 hours, and the full-length version is 492 minutes, or 4 hours and 52 minutes; still long at almost 5 hours, but hardly "6 plus hours".

HI, NEWBIE ABOARD

This was a topic in a forum in early spring 2007. Favorite sub films.

For the submarine cookbook I'm writing with assist from SUBFOR CSCM, including for the general public (civilians) the top 12 or 24 movies as recommended by submariners. Portion of book proceedss to USSVI memorial boats fund, portion to those books that sell the book.

Have many sub movie lists. Thought you might be interested in how one submariner rated his favorites.

Question: Is there a movie based on Blind Man's Bluff (fictionarlized of course)?

Yeppers, COB, a Buckeye of Ohio. However, we NEVER tell folks in Michigan the true meaning of "Buckeye" -- a" hairless nut of little or no value":rotfl:

Nancy! You're no newbie. :) Das Boot and Destination Tokyo are a couple of my favorites.

Actually I might say the same thing about The Enemy Below…

I saw this a million times as a kid, and it recently came to the top of my LoveFilm rental list. I watched it last weekend with my girlfriend and I must say I was pretty dissappointed about how hammy and camp it seems now. :( Mind you I had just watched Das Boot the week before in its original uncut 10 hour format in German with German subtitles, so anything after that was going to be a let down.

I made my girlfriend sit through the depthcharge attack schene where Johann goes berserk after TEB, just to prove a point :)
