well 2nd patrol last night.
i wanted to practise my skills using torps so i was attacking tramp steamers the ones that cant fight back :arrgh!: i used all but 5 of my fish sinking numerous tramps.
then with no warning i hit an un reported conyoy with a couple of DD`s escorting.
i managed to sneak close to the convoy bout 2000m i fired 4 fish all of them exploded early:stare: :damn: :nope: of course then the DD`s came looking for me, i never heard 1 single ping from them at all but they knew where i was even though i d dived to 210m and 2knts silent running they DC me to hell and back but only took slight damage.
i was attacked my dd`s twice but i never heard one ping they still knew where i was so whats the crack with this??

Were you at x1 time compression? If not, you couldn't hear the pinging.
Lucky you, still floating!

Strange. But I think they could just drop the surprise in the place they thought you were and they didn't feel like checking to make themselves sure, cause they were sure... Maybe they spotted the scope, or you were using steam torpedoes that mark your position by leaving trace on the surface? The only explanation I could think of.

What year are you playing?
If you're early in the war I think you're just unlucky, although if there are loads of DDs in the area it's easier for them to pick you up. Good thing you are still alive though;)

yeah im in 1939. i just cant believe that all 4 fish exploded before reaching their target:nope:
weather was shocking, i set depth to 6m and impact

It is a common issue for torpedoes to detonate prematurely if you're using magnetic pistols and the weather is bad. Especially in 1939-1941. That's why I always use impact pistols.
Yes, especially the early electrical eels. Horrible results with those. I always use steamers in 1939/1940. The second electrical torpedo is much better.

You clearly state they were set to 'impact' :yep:
So I would say you were very unlucky :yep:

well this career im doing i made a save in game and since then wierd things have been happening just to name one.....order flank speed and the needle falls to all stop:doh: 4 fish ALL exploded too early one after the other .and not one DD has pinged me after 2 seperate attacks in different parts of the atlantic
I think the torps exploding prematurely was bad luck. I've had a number of duds, but never all of them.
As for destroyers without pinging, they often do that. Also in a cinvoy attack, the nearest one will come pretty fast to the location from which you fired your torpedoes (unless they've spotted you periscope as you looked for targets).
I calculate that one has 3 minutes from the moment the scope comes up 'til an escort is on top of you. (assuming the nearest DD is 2,000 meters from your attack location.
My standard procedure is: quickly find a target, launch two torps at a fat target. Then launch two torps at two different targets. Flank speed and order new depth of 180 meters, down scope.
After 30 seconds, I order slow ahead. This gives me another 30 seconds of high speed but quiet running and I order rudder 5 degrees. By now approximately 2 minutes have elapsed. An escort doing 15 knots will have covered 800 meters toward my last know position. Chances are it will have a hard time pinpointing my exact position.
Here I reduce speed to 2 knots and I should have a depth of over 60 meters.
When the escort is overhead dropping DCs, I can get away by going flank and rudder amidships while I'm in the escort's baffles. Once I reach 6 knots I order 2 knots.
So far, this has worked for me.

I used to use similar tactics in GW but find the same tactics a bit 'hitty missy' in GWX :hmm:

well that sounds good in theory so i will give it a shot tonight.
only problem im having is finding a convoy in the first place lol i see them on the map and kinda try to intercept them but by the time i get there they have long gone due to course change.
i was just plain lucky to run into that convoy i was talking about.
