Just playing regular Silent hunter 3.
I'm in a mission using a type IIA and its April 1942. The seas have been very rough on my little sub. I've sank a c2 cargo on my way to grid AM95. Then I came across two groups of enemy shipping. One being a taskforce containing two fiji class cruisers. I sunk those with only two torpedoes, 1 per ship.
The rest I left alone and I went on my way. As I got closer to my patrol grid, I yet came across another group which turn out to be a large convoy. It has two prizes I want. It has one t3 tanker and one t2 tanker. T2 tankers I can sink easily, but t3 tankers I can't even sink with two torps. Guess what I've only got two torps left.
I'm in position for a solution. I have saved the game here, and I have tried over and over again to learn an easy one shot one kill method for the T3 Tanker, but I have not been able to sink it or stall their engines.
I've tried everything, like setting a torp to magnetic pistol and shooting it under keel of the T3. Even tho luck was with me and it exploded causing some damage and flooding the bow, still that beast won't die!
Tried setting the torp to hit the bow, center and stern but no luck. Tried different depths in between 3-13 meters.
I even fired both torps with an impact pistol, hitting it several times and still it won't die!
What should I do? Any advice?

I would suggest to set the running depth to 1m, impact pistol and fire one torpedo a little bit in front of the engine room and one at the front bridge of the tanker. That should do it;)
Also check these out they are maps of the ship's critical areas in stock SH3. Aim at the ammo bunkers, engine rooms and fuel tanks and you will have one torpedo kills.

I think itīs not always possible to sink a T3 with one shot.
Perhaps itīs empty, no oil in the cargo.....then it can easly fill its "empty tanks" with water in the damaged compartement instead.
Maybe Iīm wrong.....

Aww thanks I will give it a try. If I still can't sink it I'll go for the t2 and something else in the convoy.
i saw somewhere (i think it was in the community manual...the site is down right now??) that your best chance at sinking a T3 with a single shot is to aim right under its bridge (or somthing like a meter in front of it) with torpedo set at 3-3.5 meters and pistol at impact.
It seems that the T3's had their engine room there and as with most merchants the engine room is the most vulnerable point.
Even though tankers are supposed to be highly flammable, when empty they tend to carry water as ballast and therefore i find it better to go directly for the shot under the bridge...
well, good luck kapitan

Go for the T2 and something else from the convoy....at least you have a choice/options

hehehe...the man said that: "I'm in a mission using a type IIA and its April 1942"
can you imagine trying to sink a T3 with a 20mm flak??? hmmm actually that would be interesting from a statistical point of view...we could find out:
a) how many 20mm shells it takes to sink a T3
b) how many seconds it takes for a IIA to be turned into a heap of metal

Okay,deck guns didn't work.Automagically teleport Bernard into the T3.
did u try the shot under the bridge?

I sank a Large Cargo the other night with 2-steamers left.
I used a .5 spread shot at 900 meters, both hit directly under the center stack and 5 seconds after the explosions she splits in two.

General advice: remember not to get too focused on a specific target! If you take unnecessary chances to try and sink the big fish, you will sooner or later end up dead. I'd much rather come home with 30,000 tons sunk than die at sea with 50,000 tons sunk :know:

You might try setting the torpedo for 5 meters depth and impact pistol setting. Maneuver as close as possible to be 90 degrees to the T3, with an AoB between 65 - 115 degrees, and within 1000 meters. Do not lock the periscope: manually set the crosshair to just in front of the bridge area at the stern. That's where its fuel bunker is located, and a good shot there in stock SHIII usually will sink a T3 with no trouble.
