Ok WarHawk, I've been all wrapped up evading (or sinking) DD's and generally being a pain-in-the-arse to everything in the mid-north Atlantic...including myself. I actually dozed off on one long stretch patrolling the shipping lanes and was awakened by the WO screaming "aaallllaaaaaaaaaaaaaarm" as we crashed dived to avoid an air attack.
And what of you, my friend? Have you managed to get out of port yet...in one piece??:damn:

The Hawk is on patrol number 4:up:. For some reason my aim has gotten bad as I have only 1 merchant to my credit for 14 torpedos:o. I guess my brain wants to get past two patrols and I fire far away(gun shy) so the dreaded warships do not sink me on patrol #2 again. I have to admit though that I have IL2 1946 and this has drawn my attention away. Needless to say my aim in this game sucks also.
Tonight is a uboat patrol night. I long for the sea spray and sinking merchants. I think SH3 has better staying power then IL2 1946 will ever have. I go back to IL2 because I'm in a squad. BTW, they are using GWX after I showed them this past weekend. They love it. Some nights we do some wolfpacking on line. That was with 1.1a and they did not know GWX was out....now they do!!!
Thanks for your concern and my less than steller career in GWX. Patrol number 4 is just about over and I start fresh in a new grid with new torpedos....also more pissed off warships and planes;)
Most boats did not accomplish more than two patrols. As a statistic guy, I'm keeping the statistics as historic as I can:D. I'm the low end, you suck Kaleun. :dead:

Hawk...
I have found thru extensive trial and error...every DD they can throw at you goes down on one shot set at 3...mag is best. Every damned time.
I deliberately get their attention about 1800 meters out...run loud and noisy on the surface, go to PD, let em' close...really close...at about 500 meters straight on...give 'em an eel. All gone. :smug:
If you miss....you'd better express it at flank to hells gates while turning hardover. It does take some practice!:ping:
I also rigged the boat for one patrol with T5 acoustic eels(tweak program)..we're talking seriously unfair to the DD's here! Fire and forget...from as far out as 4000m.:o
I went back to the T2's and steamer mix until later.:damn:

I have tried that head on shot and always bugger it up. The DD are done only if I'm in an advantageous postion with little to no chance of failure. Usually I do not draw attention. I'm in 1941 and the acoustic torps are not available yet but I love those things!!! I'm glad they do kind of limit these and you have to pay. In all reality when these acoustics were used in tests they worked great, out in the open sea they were not that great at all. Many misses.
I'm a big fan of impact torpedos. To me if I'm getting this close and risking my rearend, I want something firing that will probably do the job. I have never done well with the mag settings. Just a conserative kind of guy who likes the sure thing;)

Try the dead astern sneak attack...they're coverage is weak at the stern. I save the hunter killer tactic for last resort when they definately are on to you. They zig-zag for awhile and then steady up for their run on you. I'm using the realistic reload times...so you only have a narrow window of opportunity. It's also a bit unnerving to watch the periscope fill up with the bows of a pissed off warship. Many of my crew soil themselves and transfer off the boat at their earliest convenience.

Soiled is right and it is usually me as I'm the one looking through the scope:o:rotfl::rotfl:

You mentioned your aim is bad? Have you tried Dr. Shultz's bifocal attack perscope?

I just think I was too far away from the convoys and dialing in the wrong speeds, etc. Haste makes waste;). I have tried Dr. Shultz's seltzer water...it is great with scotch:smug:

The magnetic setting saved my butt: A Town class destroyer detected me and I was in a good position for a 0° angle (stern) shot. I released the eel (magnetic+ impact) but it didn't go under the keel but passed the destroyer on her starboard side. However the eel detonated and although I got a message that it was a dud the destroyer began to sink slowly. I guess the torpedo thought it was a fast moving magnetic mine.;)
