View Full Version : Convoy Approach Periscope Down

One thing I have learned in GWX: In daytime and calm seas, even crummy tramp steamers will spot your periscope from a great distance. In my last convoy, I had 3 choices: Attack in daylight with 180 meters of water or at night with around 60 meters. I could also skip trying to commit suicide.

I chose daylight and deeper water.

The moment the lead escort came into sight and I had him identified on the hydrophone, down went the scope. I would not use it again until positioned for the attack.

In the picture below, you will see how I ploted the escort's track without risking to give away my position.

The screenshot was taken after the attack with a destroyer about to drop depth charges on top of me.

I am sure that had I used the scope before I was in position to attack, the destroyers would have nailed me.

A few minutes later, one of the torpedoed ships exploded.
A pyro ship exploded, too but I had nothing to do with that one.

Another thing I've noticed is at 3 kts, the destroyers have at least a vague idea of where you are. At 2 kts, they lose you.

Got 15,000 tons from this baby. :)

Hey Brag,
I am curious to know how you decide where you will be putting the ship marks on this map? Whenever I am submerged and sneaking up on a convoy with my periscope down, I obviously have a readout which lets me know the contact's bearing and after a few of these I can deduce approximately which direction he's heading in, but how can you figure out it's range? Is it where the contact line begings to fade?

Also does anyone know where i can find the hydrophone tutorial that keeps getting mentionned? I know the difference between a ship with one or two screws, but aside from that, I'm still pretty much lost...

Thx

I mark it where the line fades out.

That's where I mark it.
For the hydro tutorial, you'll have to search the threads. You'll probaly find it in the newbie guide thread at the beginning of the forum page.
Good luck and fair winds :)
