I noticed I can start in oktober 1939 (note: only VII's in september, adjust with SH3Commander to oktober) in a IX out of Wilhelmshaven...

Not that I sank anything on my first patrol though. Got beaten up badly by 4 DD's and had to hurry back with my tail between my legs. Close callus maximus.

Patrol 2 comin' up. AM51 :)

The VII's are quick and swift, however, ever since I first got the game, and even with GWX, the IX feels more and more like my boat.

It is I guess :)

IX is a very good boat. It's a bit big and dives slower than VII but it carries a lot more torpedoes and has a huge range. I always chose it as it gives me the oportunity to reach far away theaters of operations.

yea the IXB is pretty good
you can leave from kiell and go all the way to new york and back again (speed 8-9 knots) with enough fuel for 2000-3000 km still
and loads of eels:arrgh!:

I like to start with a II. It makes me feel like I'm really progressing when I get upgraded to a bigger boat

My last career went to the bottom, not much hunting it was like a barren sea out there. Now back with my new IXB boat and coming across plenty of targets, had a run in with destroyers banged up my boat three times and one of those was real bad but I am still here.

IX is a very good boat

is only a bit larger than VII but load 22 torpedoes and a big 37 cm flakgun,
with supercharger runs at 20 knts.
great for happy times convoy attacks.

I always used IX boats since aces of the deep .

sorry but i coulīt resist the temptation of put a screenshot of my favourite boat

That's the best looking sea cow!! :rotfl:

When still in stock SHIII, I did 3 patrols in a IXB --Loved it!

Then started my GWX life from scratch. One patrol in a II canoe. Now in a VIIB, hoarding renown for a IX sumbie. 2-3 more patrols and should have a IX by mid-year 1941. :smug: If I live that long. Got the bazonks pounded out of me after a convoy attack. It's a lot more difficult to acquire tonnage on GWX

Mission 2: I'm still alive and heading back to Wilhelmshaven from the AM's. 24.000+ tonnage so far. I'm quite content

First part of the patrol was quite an uneventful trip through the North Sea. Sank a trawler SW of Scapa, my first kill of this new GWX IX career. Lost track of one convoy in storm and rain, but picked up some lonely small and large merchants, one pyro, one passenger/cargo. All G1 steamers in the tubes, one dud so far. No early electrics for me.

No contacts at all with destroyers or planes. Shame I lost track of the convoy though. Four forward eels left. One aft. I'm heading back via Scapa and the North Sea.

After the first trip and, I forgot to mention, three casualties, morale is back up again! Caffee with a little schnapps for zee boys tonight! :arrgh!:

Happy times... for now...

87% realism. External camera and map updates are enabled...

I remember in SH2 you could easily mod the game to command a Type 14 U-Tanker. Now there was a wallowing sea cow. No torpedoes you could fire. Just flak and deck guns. The challenge with this sub was just staying alive. :arrgh!:

Okay, I'm going to go and venture here and ask...now why the heck would you want to command a U-Tanker?!

Well as it was stated above IX boats are not just U-Tankers. They carry a large amount of torpedoes and they have a good range. That gives you the chance to reach far theaters of operations and to attack more targets. Obviously the patrols last much longer (something between 40-60 days usually) and as you cross the Ocean to reach your hunting grounds it can get a bit boring and lonely. In the end what matters is if you like this type of command and this type of game. I personaly love it that's why I chose the IXC/IXD2. Obviously each to its own so if you feel better with the VII go forth and enjoy it;) :D

Well, you could always sniff the fumes of all that extra gas your carrying whilst waiting on your next 'hook up'

CHECK THE TYPE IX SIG
