On 12th Jan, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in a press release noted that the Doomsday clock was to be moved forward to highlight the "Most Perilous Period Since Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists (BAS) will move the minute hand of the "Doomsday Clock" on January 17, 2007...the first such change to the Clock since February 2002. The major new step reflects growing concerns about a "Second Nuclear Age" marked by grave threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing "launch-ready" status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks.

WHAT DO U THINK??? WHAT ARE THE NUCLEAR THEAT??? TRIDENT-II or the failed N. Korean missiles ,the R-29 missiles or the JL-1 owned by the PLA?

At one stage or another, every man woman or child will be faced with the issue of Doomsday. While it is becoming a hot topic for debate, it is yet to receive proper recognition for laying the foundations of democracy. It is estimated that that Doomsday is thought about eight times every day by the upper echelons of progressive service sector organisations, trapped by their infamous history. I will now demonstrate the complexity of the many faceted issue that is Doomsday.
Social Factors
There is cultural and institutional interdependence between members of any community. Back when Vealinger reamarked "the power struggle will continue while the great tale of humanity remains untold" [1] he, contrary to my learned colleague Sir George Allen's recent publication: "Into the eye", could not have been referring to eighteenth century beliefs regarding society. While deviating from the norm will always cause unrest amongst ones peers.
Of paramount importance to any study of Doomsday within its context, is understanding the ideals of society. Society is powered by peer pressure, one of the most powerful forces in the world. As long as peer pressure uses its power for good, Doomsday will have its place in society.
Economic Factors
Is unemployment inherently bad for an economy? Yes. We will primarily be focusing on the Custard-Not-Mustard model, making allowances for recent changes in interest rates.
There is no longer a need to argue the importance of Doomsday, it is clear to see that the results speak for themselves. The question which surfaces now is, how? Even a child could work out that interest looms over Doomsday this cannot be a coincidence. In the light of this free trade must be examined.
Political Factors
Posturing as concerned patriarchs, many politicians guide the electorate herd to the inevitable cattle shed of 'equal opportunity.' Comparing the ideals of the young with the reality felt by their elders is like contrasting pre and post war views of Doomsday.
In the words of jazz singer Kuuipo Woodpecker 'Taking a walk across hot coals will inevitably hurt your feet.' [2] I argue that his insight into Doomsday provided the inspiration for these great words. It would be wise to approach the subject with the thought that 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all'. However this can lead to missing out important facts.
While Doomsday may be a giant amongst men, is it a dwarf amongst policy? I hope not. Conclusion
We can say with certainty Doomsday must not be allowed to get in the way of the bigger question: why are we here? Putting this aside its of great importance. It enlightens our daily lives, brought up a generation and is a joy to behold.
The final say goes to the award winning Elton Lopez: 'I demand Doomsday, nothing more nothing less.' [3]

Iran, NK, loose dirty nukes in the hands of Islamic governments and terrorists, responses to all of these.

I agree with baggygreen on this.

This sounds like Terrorist holding me hostage (or trying to)

I don't scare easy so I would not make a good hostage.

All this Nuke stuff just scares hell outta people who want to be scared.

If you wanna run around being afraid, don't get in my way I have a life to live you may get run over.

Would anyone be left alive to move the clock foward assuming doomsday was upon us? :know: Some 200 years from now the clock will be in some alien museum, one alien says to the other "ah those humans couldnt even get that right could they".

I clean hazardous materials for a living and a nuc war doesn't really scare me. I know what they are capable of doing and what has been hyped up my hollywood. If you are outside the initial impact zone your chances of survival are pretty good. Alpha particles are only hazardous to your body if they are taken in somehow, breating, swallowing..etc. They are only able to travel a few inches from the material before they die. Now admittadly in a blast they will be thrown over a larger radius but that fact still applies. Beta is stopped by our skin, now it can still effect you detrimentaly if ingested somehow, but over all just a little more dangerous as it travels just a little farther from the substance than the alpha. Now the big worry is the Gamma, this is a strictly energy factor and will pass thru our bodies and damage all the organs as it passes thru. Heavy shielding, and as much distance as possible are the best option when dealing with this slippery bugger. Just my 2 cents worth.

On 12th Jan, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in a press release noted that the Doomsday clock was to be moved forward to highlight the "Most Perilous Period Since Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

So I guess the Cold War doesn't count? Or the period in the 1950s when it was two minutes to midnight...or even as recent as 1984 when it went to three minutes to midnight?

It's worrying yeah, but nothing as bad as it used to be....yet.

And who is it that determines the "time" on this clock? Physicists? Mathematicians? University professors?

Sounds like a bloody accurate clock to me!

Aaah, so when Queen did 'Hammer to Fall' it wasn't about nuclear war, it was about the hammer hitting the nuclear clock!

I see now!!
