Just completed some work (telecom wiring) on three gas rigs in the gulf and now I'm home for two weeks RnR before going back out. I got Silent Hunter in July of last year and never has a chance to play. Loaded it last night, went to my favorit subsims place and now I'm wearing a neck brace becuase, sssheeess, I'm overwelmed at the amount of MODs there are here. I've played the game now for about a half an hour and I need to get modded.
Now I ask you in the know. what are the best mods I can install and in what order for the neck deep, nail bitting experience I am longing for...
My present system is:
2.0 P4, 1gb ram, 256 mb video (gforce).
I greatly apprieciate all your help in a short amount of time.

Well you hava choice of 3 main " super " mods
NYGM
UWAC2
GWX
Personally I say go with GWX but then I'm biased
Try them all on different installs
No one can make up your mind for you
The most recent version of the Grey Wolves: GWX all the way.
Lots of other mods out there that go fine with GWX though. Cool VII skins for example :)

GWX
GWX Dec 23rd 06 patch
SH3 Commander 2.7
is a minimum (patch te game to 1.4b version before)
and I personally would try also Depth_Charge_Shake_v1.03 (haven't tried it, but will do tomorrow).

You need SH3Cmd and SH3Gen. Those two are a must in any SH3 game. After that you can chose GWX or NYGM. Both are really good so I would suggest you try them and make up your own mind
My take on you starting out with SHIII.
First make sure you have Patch 1.4b US. You didn't say if you had it installed or not. It's a must have that's very necessary. All mods and expansions require it. Found here and the last at thebottom of the page: http://patches.ubi.com/silent_hunter_3/
Next is SHIII Commander 2.7 as everyone says. ;) Link is in JScones' sig in the link below.
Then for a stock SHIII and to add mods you need the JSGME mod installer. Info and link here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=101815
If it was me just starting out I'd play the stock SHIII with the above and mods you want. Once you know what's going on and the ins and outs of SHIII then go to GWX, NYGM or RUB. Or do multipul installs and try them all. ;) Sounds daunting but it's not... unless you're like me. LOL Many of the guys here have links in their sigs to mods the created or hosted by them. It's a big choice on which to install. Personally I have 80+ mods in my stock SHIII and the detail, "realism" to my taste and eyecandy are great.
Now I've moved on to GWX and it's much harder to survive as members here have said. But the realism, eyecandy and depth of SHIII is more than doubled IMHO. Learn to survive or die early in a career is what GWX is. Tactics are now completely different than in the stock game.

I'd say patch to 1.4b, & do the Academy exams first. The mods will make it harder for you to pass with flying colours.
Make a copy of your install & save it somewhere as a backup. Then try the mods out to see which one you like.

As above. Make sure you're patched to 1.4b and play it that way for a while. Then start trying mods.

or if your totally lost play vanilla for a while then decide what you want more of e.g more ships, if you want more realism. then look at what all the mods do i decide if its for you. i have chosen GWX and will have it running within a week now

You say your home for two weeks :yep: ...Get used to playing the vanilla/stock game first...then download the GWX manual and install GWX (there's a link on my sig) in preparation for your next stint of home leave...don't forget to take the manual away with you for those long lonely nights
