Hi all, I'm new to SH3, been playing for about a week and I'm thoroughly disgusted with it.. It eats up all of my free time! Been avoiding friends and family so I can spend more quality time on the North Sea.. Simply the best sub sim ever, but you all knew that already!

Got a question about upgrading the boat.. I'm playing stock SH3, it's April 1940, 1st flotilla. I previously upgraded to a IID for the improved range so I wouldn't have to resort to using batteries on the long run back from the Orkneys.. But now I want better armament 'cuz I'm finding more targets than I have torps to deal with.. I can upgrade to a VIIB or VIIC.. From what I can tell, they're pretty much equal but the VIIB has slightly better underwater speed and the C dives a little faster. I'm inclined to go with the VIIB since it costs less reknown..

Does it make sense to go to a type Vll, or should I hold out for a type lX? -Badbrains

well there are very mixed views on this and you will get many different responses. i stuck with the IID then changed flotilla coz i think 7th flotilla uses the IX series earlier in the war than th 1st flotilla. i waited till then and went for the IXB lots of fish for the firing there of :smug:

Well, I would get a IX as soon as possible because you get to go to places a VII can't reach and a lot more torpedoes. But as soon as Operation Pukenschlag (operation drumbeat) is over ( ~ June '42) I would go to VIIc because they dive faster which is a big plus if you get attacked.

IMHO, your choice of boat would depend on your playing style.
If you dig being sent to the western part of the Atlantice, or down the west coast of Africa, then a Type-IX is essential. Think of it as a B747 equivalent in terms of endurance.
The Type VII otoh, is like a medium haul aircraft like the Airbus A300. It carries less torps, but is more manoeuverable & dives faster than a Type IX.
If you choose to go for a Type VII, I'd suggest getting a VIIC rather than a B. I think the C gets better conning tower upgrades later on in the war which enable you to mount more flak guns - essential considering Allied aerial ASW capability gets better as the war progresses.
I can't advise you on the Type IX as I'm a Type VII person myself.

Also,

If you are like me and prefer to sink merchants travelling alone, IX is better. If you love the convoy battles VIIC would be the way to go.

Yep especially in the Carribean and along the US and Mexico Coast there are plenty of lone merchants, especially tankers. To reach them you need an IX type boat.

Hi mate, and welcome to subsim!

i would stick with the C. The B is alright, but the "big brother" C is way cooler!

If you want to do a little "cheat", just for the immersion, you can go to
documents and settings/"your user name"/my documents/SH3/data/cfg/careers/"your career name"/patrols_0.cfg

Open the .cfg file in a word program, and scroll down to the bottom. There you will find a line saying: deltarenown. Set this to what you like, IE 999999

That will give that career 999999 i renown, and you can buy what you want!

If you like it realistic (like me), dont do that. But then you should also install GWX, and use real navigation!:up:

Happy hunting, mate!!:D

The VII is a damn good boat. I like the IX for the wrong reasons, it makes you feel like you're in command of a large ship and the views from the conning tower are better. The torpedo load is great. But the IX dives like a wallowing cow. In my previous career, before GWX, I went to the Caribbean twice and had some fun. I would stick with a VII until you've hoarded enough renown for IX. By then you will know what type of sumbie is good for you.

Happy hunting!

There is no right or wrong answer. All are great boats, each with their own approach to sinking ships. Try each one out and see which one you like best.

It all depends on where you like to go.

-North to mid atlantic, mediterrainean, area's just west of gibralter, and around the british isles? Then a type VIIC is your best choice, a type IX your poorest.

- Everywhere/anywhere else? A Type IX is your best choice, a type VII your poorest.

Thanks for the advice, sounds like the right answer is try 'em all! So I guess I'll go with the VllC for now and start building up renown for the type IX.. But then again.. :hmm: Maybe I'll start a second career and go for the type IX in that one..

As for expansions, GWX seems to be the popular option.. Does installing GWX mean I have to restart my career? And where can I find it? Is GWX the same as the commercialy available expansion I've seen in stores? -Badbrains

Afraid so. GWX installation requires a completely clean install of SH3 with the 1.4b patch. It can be downloaded here: http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX/ (http://www.users.on.net/%7Ejscones/GWX/)

And GWX does virtually everything the commerical expansion does, plus it includes much more content. Save your money.
