I always find it incredable how much of a huge technology impression the second world war made.

Tanks like the german Maus and ratte, russian planes like the flying tank and flying submarine, ballistic missiles....... it all came within the space of 5 years

By the start of the war the world had only within the past 6 years made the jump to mono wing planes with plans on the drawing board for jets, and by then end of the war germany had planes nearly breaking the sound barrier equiped with wire guided missiles :o

If you look into it, some of the weapons developed (mainly by germany) have only recently been realised. The american B2 spirit bomber was a more advanced copy of a german delta wing bomber. Germany had even discovered stealth technology

The allies and soviets were absolutly stunned when they captured prototypes and couldnt beleve how far ahead germany was. Many of the weapon ideas made by the germans influenced the cold war in huge ways.

Yeah at the end of WWII it was a mad scramble by the americans, british and russians to capture as many german scientists as they could. The americans put serveral german rocket scientists into their space programme, including Wernher von Braun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wernher_von_Braun" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wernher_von_Braun)), who developed the V2 rocket for nazi germany - He then went on to develop the saturn 5 for the americans, that put man on the moon. A true genius.
