Having played this game as well as its "grandfathers" including AOD(C) and SH2, I am still amazed that so many vessels travel at ridiculously low speeds. At time of writing (two computers) I am firing two eels at a small merchant off the coast of Ireland, and he is travelling at the mere speed of 1 knot. Why?
On the other hand... I have fired three torpedoes now, none have worked. Perhaps they do not need any speed on an average.

Is there something in the ships path? ie a ship comeing close to him or a sinking ship, or just lousy weather could be a number of factors.

Nope. It is a beautiful summer afternoon, no wind, nothing. Sunny.
And btw... with 6 failed torpedoes, I would better ask for a destroyer. My deck gun is the most useful weapon aboard my vessel.

If you are using impact triggers on your torpedos, are you close to 90 AoB? (directly to one side of the target, not ahead or behind?)
Impact torpedos often bounce off the hulls of ships if they strike them a glancing blow.
If you are using magnetic, set the running depth to just below the depth of the keel of the ship (its listed in the page for that shop in the recognition manual) and you don't need to worry about AoB so much
Yes sometimes torpedos fail, but 6 in a row shouldn't fail. Also, if you don't have duds ticked on the realism screen I don't think you get any duds. Any failures are due to rough weather, or bad angle of impact.
