Hey all,
This question came to me as I was attacking a convoy in 7m/s winds .. it wasn't rough enough seas to cause my magnetic's to detonate early .. and it was rough enough to keep me out of sight.
I find that in calm weather it's much easier for them to spot me than in the rougher seas. This makes sense to me but because of it I tend to prefer attacking in rougher seas. Plus it's harder for the DD's to see my torpedo's wake in the rougher seas ensuring a hit if my torpedo's set to fast speed.
What are your thoughts?

I like a calm, dark, moonless night.
calm clear moonless nights and to attack from the west at sunrise or from the east at sunset
I vote for calm moonless as well. Like to finish off with my deck gun to preserve torpedos.
Fog i hate, slightly misjudge intercept and you're too far away and never see them to get a shot.

is the difficulty in spotting you when you are opposite the sunrise/sunset modelled?
If it is, then "wow".
One thing that I've noticed makes an amzing difference to your observibility is your profile - I wasn't paying attention the other day and I approached a bit close to a merchant before I turned parallel to him to get ahead - I thought I was ok, I was still a ways off and it was very rough. the detection meter was all green - but as soon as I turned 90 deg to him it went red, I was spotted and he started weaving :damn:
Fortunately he was an unarmed merchant, so I just headed straight for him and let him have 2 tubes @ fast speed from 400m and he didn't have time to take evasive action :arrgh!: [BOOOM.... headshot!]

Any kind of weather:D
I don't care. If I see a target I go for it no matter what. That's why I die some times I think:oops:

Gotta go with calm, moonless night... let's you sneak in real close while still on the surface.

Any apart from heavy fog will do me.
A semi dark night, half moon, will do fine. Also a hazy day with 7 to 9m/s winds will do fine too.
Or how about this, which I was in for 2 days straight in GWX. No joke, it was Grid BE18 Oct 9th & 10th, 1940.

It's one way for the crew to shower and save the subs fresh water supply. ;)

I've done 5 or 6 WAW patrols now attacking convoys on the surface in dark, stormy nights, the nastier the better as the escorts have trouble spotting you. I try to set up a 90 AOB attack run cutting across the convoy lanes firing at 500m or less. Makes for some outstanding imersion, also makes for some outstanding repairs when the DD's finally catch up.
Calm sea? Moonless night? What the heck is that? Ever sense I installed GWX I always know when I'm close to a convoy because the weather turns to Baaad. Today, ma last convoy was in 15knt/sec wind. Seas high as a mountain. This was my 7th patrol in my trusty VIIC-2. A DD snuck up on me and sent all hands to the bottom. This was on the 7th of Aug 1942 off the NW coast of N. Africa.
I haven't had calm sea state since I installed GWX. Is it programed for bad weather? All the time when you find a convoy? :hmm:

Just anything calm, then if I'm in the middle of the convoy and a merchant isn't cooperating with me, I can just surface and put a few deck gun rounds into it to finish it off, with a hail of shells raining down around me and into the surrounding vessels. Then dive and hide underneath something and make my escape:arrgh!:

Depends attacking what... a couple merchants without escort or a Flower nice weather will do, heavily escorted convoy preferably night and some rough sea for a safer escape even if it makes the attack a bit tricky...

Is AI programmed to have a bad detection-rate when weather is bad?

I used to think calm so that I could use my deck gun but after a rather nasty encounter with an armed merchant in mid-1942 (using GWX the bugger almost sank me!), I've changed my mind on that.
No I like clear, stormy weather. Makes evasion a WHOLE lot easier.

Otherwise we wouldn't be playing this sim anymore, I think.
During my running patrol, I did a raid on ScapaFlow (a good one, and escaped!), during the night with a dry (no rain) thunderstorm overhead.
Sea was calm, wind 7m/s.
Not my ideal weather (I like dark, foggy nights), but the thunderstorm made it very creepy!:o
On my escape towards the Shetlands, I came accross a large convoy coming through the islands and the mainland, and changing course SSE....still with that thunderstorm overhead.
I attacked a Pyro-ammunition ship, which completely exploded.
Imagine the atmosphere there: roaring thunders, then suddenly the last ship in a row goes down that way within minutes! They had no idea where to look. :D
A lovely sight...seeing the convoy disappear again, lit by lightning everytime.
Which brings this question: I was undetectable, but I still would love the risk of being exposed a little everytime the lightning lights up my Uboat for a split second.
And I guess that can't be modelled?

Not particularly fussy as long as I can use it to my advantage :arrgh!:
Nasty seas with super foggy weather is no help. They might not detect you but you'll have a hard time finding them too. And if you do find them, they'll probably be to close.

Pah, I know exactly what my favourite conditions are.:know:
7 m/s Wind - That way escorts are not too deadly or too dumb (sensors)
Light Fog - Same reason, I can see them before they see me.
Dusk/Dawn - Again visability reasons.
Of course this will change as the war progresses. The main aspect in later war will be the sea state as I notice that in 10 m/s + my conning tower will/does breach the surface, even if I set a lower depth i.e. 13-14m.
Note - I've never thought about visablity during rain.:hmm: Does it affect the visabilty range of escorts.

In the early years I don't really care too much about the weather. No matter waht you always manage to sink them one way or another. Later in the war things do get a bit..........difficult. The most uncomplicated type of attacks for me are in totally calm conditions, at night from the surface at lone merchants. You can ambush them and sink them before they realised what hit them.

Dark and just enough wind to kick the sea into whightcaps.

Night in medium fog, it means you can be in the middle of the convoy and the escorts can't see you!
I like a little wind, medium waves no fog. I now always set my torpedoes to impact.
