View Full Version : Too dark

I´ve got SH3 with newest patch and GWX.

Everytime I try to do a nightime attack I find it impossible to identify the ships and getting range. They´re simply too dark! I´ve tried the Ducimus mod which would make the sky brighter, but I see no improvement at all. I´ve tried fiddling with my monitor, but it´s brightness is already set to 100%. (LCD).

Is there any mod, which will make the sky even brighter than the Ducmius mod?

Ps.
I use my monitor for graphics and photoshop work, and I know that the settings are not WAY off in the black/white levels.

Usually it's a problem with the monitor settings. Since you said the brightness is at 100% I would suggest you alter your graphics card settings. That should do the trick.

The only way i can see any ships at night through my scope is by looking at my LCD screen from nearly edge on - then i can make out an outline.

Everything else its impossible, black sea, black sky, black ship - cant even tell where the horizon is, even on moonlit nights.

I had this problem on my old monitor. Woulda been nice if they(devs) had included a simple way to adjust gamma in game, but they didnt. Try adjusting the gamma/brightness levels on your V-card. Thats really the only solution if the mod doesnt help.

Now that I have a new monitor I dont have this problem anymore.

Yes, fool with the gamma/brightness on the video card program itself. Also as noted above and I do the same, change you angle of your LCD monitor. Sometimes just the angle will help. It helps me:D

if you need something more than adjusting your monitor (LCD) or changing the graphics settings in driver options there is one other possibility
files responsible for the colours are located in 'data\env' folder skycolors_*.dat and envcolors_*.dat
you can D/L these lighter env files as a part of Ducimus's modpack, check this thread:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=102761
D/L link
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/release/R...to_Taste_V4.7z (http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/release/REL_GWX_Flavored_to_Taste_V4.7z)

from redame:
....
DATA/ENV/*.DAT
Ever say to your self something like, "It's dark as crap at night and i cant squat, much less the watch officer!"
This fixes that.
....

I use these files because of my really dark CRT

or you can modify the skycolors_*.dat files to match your own needs.... it's simpe:
use the pack3d and unpack the skycolors_*.dat file, edit the extracted *.tga file and repack it back... that's all

I tried adjusting the gamma on the video-card-software. I think it´s better. If not I will try to modify the sky.tga files, using unpack.

Thanx!:D

Also don't forget that ambient light plays a large part in viewing dark things on monitors - make sure the light levels in the room are very low with soft shadows.

thnx
take the data\env\*.dat files from Ducumis's mopdpack
can be done by JSGME

here you can see the unpacked files from skycolors_atl.dat
they are the same from GWX and the lighter sky mod from Dusimus
http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/3315/unpackedcopywg6.th.jpg (http://img246.imageshack.us/my.php?image=unpackedcopywg6.jpg)

the only differnece are the colors used in the *sky_atl1.tga
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/2379/colorscopydy9.th.jpg (http://img176.imageshack.us/my.php?image=colorscopydy9.jpg)

so don't worry about the other gwx settings

or if want to be really sure to not screw anything just unpack the *.dat files from GWX replace the sky*.tga file with the lighter one and repack back

I have used Gamma SW to regulate the darkness since first Hitman game.
Very useful small program.

I recently had to give up using my 22-inch CRT monitor for a 27-inch LED monitor and the night sky completely brightened along with everything else. The difference was night and day- hahaha.
