Would you still be playing SH3 today if it wasn't for the mods?

I'll might be asking more questions like this in future. I'm writing a paper on game modification for Uni.

No Way. I had already stopped playing SH3 when I discovered GW. I never looked back after that;) :D

Same as Mel
Sh3 was on the shelf already buried
Was back playing RTW when found here and GW

I want uncertainty. I want variation. I didn't like knowing that if "I wait for x minutes" or "If I submerge to x depth" I'd be safe.

Were it not for the modders adding this uncertainty and variation, plus fixing some annoying bugs in the process, SH3 would be sitting right beside my SH2, gathering dust.

As it is, SH3 is now up there with Panzer Elite, another game that thanks to modders (particularly Bob and crew who developed Ostpak) will never be removed from my hard drive. And it's now what, 9 years old???

The funny thing for me is that I've never play SH1 and SH2 before. I knew about them but never tried them. When I got SH3 I was very impressed (especially with the graphics) but within 2-3 months I got very bored for the same reasons Jaesen mentioned. After that I stopped playing the game, and I concentrated on RTW/RTR and FM 2005/2006. At a later date I checked the net looking for patches to make the game a bit more challenging, and I've discovered GW and SubSim. My life will never be the same after that;) :yep: :yep:

The mods have completed the game in many ways and more to come. I shelved SH3 a month after I had it. Found GW 1.1 and been playing since.

I most certainly would not. GW 1.1a brought me back, GWX made me stay.

In addition we have all the fruits that are released from time to time in the candy-forum.

If it weren't for the mods that made stock SHII better I would have quit playing months ago. But seeing every couple of days a new mod that improved game play and eyecandy popped up, that alone kept me going..... and adding mods. I have over 80 mods installed in my stock SHIII alone. And, 5 DVDs totalling over 20 gigs of mods. Not all mods out there but many of them.

Now that GWX is out I've all but stopped playing stock SHIII. It's now in a backup for the time being. One day I'll get back to it just to finish the career I started. For now I've been adding mods that are safe with GWX along with the last update. And if the next update is as good as adding mods, I'll go on playing GWX until I finish a career with it. GWX has added that touch of finesse to SHIII that won't let me stop playing, it's that good. Nothing can be taken for certain in GWX. You can't and don't know what's over the horizon each day in gameplay. Besides, just reading the manual keeps you going to see what's been implemented in the expansion. ;) If the developers of SHIII ever play GWX they'll be amazed how much SHIII's been improved. I'm not trying to take away from RUB or NYGM as I've never run them. But from what I've heard and read, they too would have the SHIII developers saying "yes, that's what we wanted all along. All 3 expansions have put a polished touch to it."

What new expansions are over the horizon God only knows. But these and any new ones will keep sub gamers quite happy for a long long time.

SHIII without mods is a fun game for a few weeks, but not an obsession. With the mods, starting with Berry and IUB and continuing with the NYGM and GW1 and GWX. And still some more mods come. Jaesen is right: uncertainty, variation, innovation etc. are the most important thing in a game. If the developers of SHIV have any sense, they will make that game even more able to be modeled.

I did about 45 patrols with stock SH3 and have only recently began playing it again with GWX, just about to start my 15th patrol for this spell

Without mods like RUb, NYGM and GWX combined with SH3 commander I would have tossed SH3 into a corner a long, very long time ago. Therefore I toast all modders out there

Cheers!

Same here, really started enjoying the game with RuB. I don't think I would have played the stock game more than 2 or 3 months...
In fact if I look on my hard drive, the only games that are still there years after are the ones which were deeply modded by their community. Falcon 4 (now replaced by F4AF), Operation Flashpoint - with FFUR 2007 and WGL mods + skies, terrains, trees, etc.. - and IL2 with tons of skins and campaigns, plus my double install NYGM - GWX SH3, Grand Prix Legends and GTR.

I'd probably still be playing SH3...

But with GWX I'm living it!

I would still play it but only now and again, I started off adding little mods here a there some 30 odd then I crossed over to GW and some time next month I will start on GWX.

I voted no.
I played stock SH3 untill just after the last patch was released.
Then I returned for IUB.
And returned again, still playing on IUB, but waiting for GWX...and still playing.:D

Exactly the same as STEED :yep: ...the only difference being I was fortunate enough to be a GWX bete tester and as such I am already playing GWX

I played SH2 and like you, really enjoy(ed) Panzer Elite. Purchased SH3 and discovered my Computer wasn't up to the specs of the game so bought a Computer so I could run it and no problem. The downside is not being able to play Panzer Elite, Tank goes at 100 mph ! Haven't played anything else.
Correction, now play Virtual Pool [thanks to Gizzmoe's advice] as Expert Pool won't play either.
Definitely miss Panzer Elite and Expert Pool.

Interesting question, but I'm glad there are mods as they have proven to draw new players to the game and keep the regular players coming back for more.

I'm not sure if I would have carried on playing, the mods have most certainly extended the life span of the game. Mind you I got onto the mods band wagon quite late on (after 6 months or so of playing stock) and there was only the IUB ad IUB mods at the time - at least it goes to prove that the stock game kept me interested.

I honestly think I will still play this game in a years time along with SHIV, It will be great to have the best of both worlds playing with the USN and the Kriegsmarine.

I probably would. I like subsims, and it's worlds better than SHII was. That said, of course most mods make a huge difference, so I'm not complaining.

I would be still playing stock, but probably only 1-2 times a month while looking for something else. Mods make this game a whole different experience!

My problem now is that I can't stop playing thanks to GWX and supporting MODs.

I've never tried any of the mods. The regular simulation balances realism and fun for me. I'm a hard-core realism fan when it comes to flight sims (Falcon 4 SP), but when it comes to sub-sims, I don't mind a little unrealistic play.

I don't have that problem and my machine is only 1 year old. :hmm: Still, have you tried:

a) running Panzer Elite in compatibility mode for Win 98?
b) d/l and trying one of the numerous "slowdown" pieces of software that mimic older systems so games like PE, and my other favourite "Lords of the Realm 2" can run as they originally did?

You should try some mods.
They don't just improve realism.

I would definitely not be playing SH3 anymore, if there wasn't for all these wonderful mods. In fact, prior to discoveryng Subsim community, I had allready stopped playing SH3 for about half a year, it was boring. Since then, I have tried most of the mods. I was very happy to see that so many people shared my passion, at least abroad...if not in my country :(. For me, and I am sure that many of you feel the same, the classic submarine era has become almost an obsession. Whether german, american, russian or ..you name it, the silhouette of a sub makes my heart beat faster.

All the best for everyone, may the waves be with you.:rock::rock:

Nope, yet I was getting the urge to have a go with one of the supermods.

I sign on here after a long, long break...and find that this hot new mod (GWX) is about to come out. I get my install all cleaned up and waited for it to arrive.

It did, and I'm playing daily.

Mods certainly spice up the game, although, I have installed and uninstalled many games to make room for newer games, but SH is one of those games that never get removed as eventually I will start itching to play again. Since the multi versions, I now have GWX, NYGM, and WAC choices to pick from. I also take the best eye candy portions from each one and enhance the others to my taste. I don't mess with the config files as I know this could lead to mod not playing correctly.

I would definately not be playing SH3 now if there were no mods.

The stock game was simply to bug ridden, half finished and way to arcadey to keep my interest for long.

Thanks to mods like RUB,then GW1.1a and now the great GWX SH3 will stay on my hard drive for quite some time.

I could not get myself to play between January and December 2006. Wether I was sinking C2's or C3's, alone or from a convoy, using torpedoes or the deck gun, playing j'attendrai or the tipperary song, well, playing Silent Hunter was just beginning to feel all the same to me. I was rather suprised that when I had installed GWX I was playing a week straight - good job GWX team!

I don't want to sound like I'm making fun of you but you must be one of the few who chose stock SH3 to the mods. Anyhow the important thing is to have fun with the game I guess, so go forth and enjoy it:D I would suggest though you try GWX. You don't really miss anything, it's free and if you don't like it just uninstall it and go back to the original SH3

With no qualifications, my answere is "No".

The Mods are a HUGE reason that I've come back to SH3--and the "SuperMods" are the reason that I've stayed. But beyond that, the community that's created those mods--and created the discussion about those mods, are why I really like playing this game. Do you realize the group of people that are assembled in this forum and their knowledge about WWII U-Boat warfare? I'm really not sure if you could find a more knowledgable community. And beyond that, a more good-hearted, accepting community.

Hell, of course, the mods and this forum are the only things that have kept my interest in the game. F', I'm in the middle of another GR patrol in an IXD2, but because of Ducimus, I was excited about trying one. Then I tryed another...then I just couldn't stop.

Mods + Forums = Fun
