48 dead...

After a successfull hit of two merchants, below Spain somewhere, we were at 0 knots at 30 meters deep, waiting for the night to fall in.
Playing the grammaphone at 64 TC.. suddenly I see the text the enemy is pinging us...
and boom, depthcharge right on us.. unable to stop te flooding etc.. all dead, including me.. :-(

Moral of the story: how did they locate me ? it MUST be the grammaphone, since alle machinen stop was in order.

Although your engines were at all stop, you weren't at silent running which meant there existed the possibility of some noise.

Also, how close were you to the location you sank the merchants? And how much time had elapsed? It's possible a warship responded to the merchants distress call and was just doing a methodical active sonar search of the region to see if it could run across you.

One of many things I've learned since GWX :D :p is to leave the area as quickly as safely possible to avoid having to duck warships responding to my attacks.

I was away of the place of the 'crime' for hours, half a day, and about 100 km before Tanger. The year is aug 1940.

9 great patrols, and then died due such event.. :damn:

Well, I am my 'brother' now, and he joined at 1941 at Salamis.. new carreer.

Yeah man, if you sink a vessel, get out of Dodge quickly. The bad guys seem to get really upset if you sink their ships.

Closer to the surface

Not risen, took care of that.. if you in GWX, decend to 30 meters, you go up a couple, but it sticks around 24 meters..

Johan, I think part of the mystery lies here:
64 TC
Now if you had been at 1xTC, and manning the hydrophone yourself, then maybe you would have noticed that ships returned, trying to find you.
And maybe you would have heard, that they got closer, and stopped their engines every now and then, to listen.
And maybe they started using asdic, because they thought they heard something, and still suspected you to be somewhere below them.
Even on 64TC, time flies by to quickly for you to react accordingly.

They must have come back, because otherwise you wouldn't have been able to get higher than 32TC.
By the time TC dropped to 1x (or 2x/8x, depending on your game), it was already much to late...1st detection, then pinpointed by asdic, and finally DC'd...all happened within a few seconds, because of TC prior to these events.
If you had been on silent-running, then you would have been sailing home now.

sometimes if the enemy has a good datum point on you being totally quiet
(silent running, all stop) will not prevent you being detected when they return
because the escort will make an active sweep of the datum point as he approaches and as it is active not passive sweep being quiet and staying still wont help. also It is correct escorts are not able to hear the gramaphone although they should be able to I bet the englishers would like to hear Led Zepplin.
