I don't follow a lot of the threads here anymore because it's gotten really confusing over the past few months. Not sure why, just an observation.

So I was wondering, with the GWX supermod, will I see increased harbor traffic? Can I confidently try and sneak into Gibraltor or Liverpool and expect to encounter moored ships? Maybe even military vessels?

I know I've noticed, in the short time I've played(mostly testing), that there are small convoy's merchants, with varying flags, escorted by tramp steamers, etc... But are there more potential targets in the harbors.

Thanks

Depends on what year you go sniffing in the harbors. English channel is busy right off...you'll be dead faster than than you can say "Jack Robinson".

Gibralter doesn't really get busy til late 1940. Dunkirk is easy pickings in mid 1939...a couple of mercs....maybe a DD or two.

However, I have to tell you that historically, U-Boats didn't practice serious harbor raids...1) they're deathtraps...too shallow 2) too much of a risk...and the crews and boats are worth more than what is generally available in port 3) it's not good sport to shoot an anchored vessel.

There are plenty of single mercs out there in the shipping lanes. Refer to the shipping lane chart and set up an area near a choke point. Patrol it til you're out of torps.

I patrolled the deep water channels up in northwestern Scotland/Rockhall and bagged 9 smaller mercs on one outing and then 9 large mercs the next time out....mid-late 1939.

I agree that it's not too sporting, and truth be told, I wasn't really looking to go any sort of raiding. Many times when I go on patrol from Wilhemshaven, I slip through the English channel, even early war, by hugging the coast very tightly. More times than not I can make it through, eventhough there are a ton of destroyers and armed trawlers.

I just found it kind "dead" when you'd pass the harbors, and there weren't an boats in site. The factories are going, pumping out smoke, making products, but I guess they're going by rail.

Thanks

Are you coming from the stock game ?
every port in GWX is alive with shipping
Merchants and warships alike

Escorted by tramp steamers ?
lol
All escorts are warships
Some convoys early on have no warships

There are potential targets everywhere
Harbour raiding isnt exactly historical and can get you killed rather easy

Still each to their own
Be no point in placing ships in ports if no one was gonna sink em :rotfl:

I say escorted by tramp steamers, because they had bow and stern gun emplacements, the ships they were "escorting" weren't armed. It was sort of a joke, trust me, I know the real difference between the two.

I used to see similar convoys, 2-4 ships off the SW coast of Spain entering the channel into the Med. Usually pretty easy pickings if you didn't get too close to the Gib. entrance which was heavilly patrolled. I believe on more than one occasion, I came back with 9-11 kills...

ahhh, those were the glory days.

I have not seen a Large convoy since I left the atlantic all I found all through 44 were small convoys of around 8 ships, and a couple of TF's so I do quite a lot of harbour raids to boost up my tonnage, but now am in 45 and even that's getting a bit harder.

Yeah, someone has raided Lorient and sank some of the ships there. These are 2 of the 3 I found resting on the bottom near shore.
