View Full Version : GWX - Reykyavik!

To celebrate my acquisition of a IXB, I decided to hit Langyearsby, since I've heard to much about it. Quite as described. Afterwards, I swung by the Faroes (nada) and hit Reykyavik. This would be Fall of 1940, during the British occupation.

In the harbor, moored, were a Large Cargo, a Medium Merchant, a Small Merchant, a Medium Tanker, a Dido, and a destroyer I didn't bother to ID. Looked like a C&D, though. All flying British flags (I think. Somewhere on this patrol, I managed to bag two neutrals, but the patrol log doesn't say which they were. I did hit some shipping on the sea lanes.)

Sank the bloody lot of them, with nary a peep from any hostiles until the way out, when I encountered... a lone armed tugboat.

Seems like another excellent place for people trying to rack up some easy tonnage ---and perhaps another place for the devs to consider beefing.

Good Job,

How deep was the water, and how close did you get??

I got killed in Reykjavik, in 42, I think. There were more than one trawler, probably three. But what got me was a Sunderland that crashed into my conning tower.

There are three Armed Trawlers in Iceland, and the harbour is not too deep. Once I've been cornered in there and I've been bombed to kingdom come by the trawlers and a couple of Catallinas. Dangerous place, but can yield a lot of tonnage

LeafsFan: The water was normal harbor depth, shallow. I had all steam fish so I didn't go closer than about 4km to the targets, except as necessary to maneuver so that there weren't piers in the way. I didn't want to run the risk of the Dido seeing my scope.

melnibonian: Did you go after July '41, like stabiz did? Before that point, Iceland is British occupied. After that, the Americans took over responsibility for it. I know that historically the Americans stationed far more troops there than the British had; that might account for the increased defensive presence.

...and I've been bombed to kingdom come...
"...And the thunderous explosion blew out windows two hundred miles away..."

Do I recognize what you wrote properly as a "Road to peace" quote? :)

@swuboo: Yes I went there a couple of times between 1942-1943. One of those times I was a bit unlucky:oops:

When I cruise with my u-boot along the British coat in rain and fog, it always reminds me song from the same album: "Every way I go rain's on me". And "Bottom of the World" when diving deep… Nice to know someone knows and likes Waits. I do like hell! :)

Hmmmm :hmm:
Actaually Im glad this popped up as gave me a chance to revisit Iceland
In the mision editor
:rotfl:

There are some inaccuracies there anyway

During the first year of WW2 Iceland strictly enforced a position of neutrality, taking action against both British and German forces violating the laws of neutrality

I remember reading something about the Icelanders(?) throwing rocks and stuff at the British, and that Churchills boys were glad to leave the hostile northmen to the Americans?

Wouldnt surprise me
They ran the nuetrality bit quite strict but as soon as Denmark fell proper the Brits charged in
Presumably they didnt want the Germans having a base so close
Still it eradicated unemployment :rotfl:

Yeah, its pretty much like the British mine laying outside Trondheim prior to the German invasion. The Norwegian government almost went to war against Britain over that. Tense times.

Possibly so
I hope to have all the patrols random by the spring update
That way if you sink one patrol ship it wont be the only scripted one in the area
You will get more
