By the way the log book was from the U-505. So the book it's self is real, just a nice touch.

The German U-boat remains a legend in the history of World War Two. It was the ship that attacked deep into the Atlantic, in both day and night. Taking on the might of the British Navy, braving ferocious destroyers and striking convoys with deadly accuracy. It was the ship that could take massive damage and still manage to make it back home. It was the ship that held 48 men and bound them into a tough-fighting unit.
This is the story of the U-123 a U-boat with the 7th Flotilla, but it is also the story of the merchant marine and the brave sailors that sailed the convoys and risked the North Atlantic. It is also the story the British destroyers who attacked the U-boats to save their convoys, it is most of all a story of the brave sailors who fought on both sides in this war and all wars yet to come.



November 30. 1941
Lorient, France

It was a normal November day, cold and cloudy, with light snow falling. It had been snowing now for almost three days, and always held things out, but in the safety of the U-boat pens, U-123 (a type IXB) was ready. Her crew was working hard to get their boat ready for sea. Newly supplied and a fresh coat of paint, all the U-123 needed was her orders.
The crew of the U-123 was a good crew, and they worked well together, and along with their boat were in great shape. All knew their jobs and did them without question. All would go to the bottom with their captain if asked to do so. Yes, the boat and her crew were ready, ready to meet the enemy, ready to send them to the bottom, ready to do wht Germany asked them to do. Yes… the U-123 had a good crew.


Dec. 01. 1941
Lorient, France
0430 hours

It was still early as the captain came aboard. Only the lights from the pens illuminated the U-boat. The dockhands were very busy, even at this hour, but the captain paid them all no mind, U-123 had finally gotten her orders.

0730 hours

The sun was up, but it was still very cold. A light snow was falling as the U-123 left the safety of the pens. No bands played or crowds cheered, as they moved out towards the North Atlantic. The U-123 quietly slipped out of the pens and out to sea.

It was very picturesque Hardegen thought…with the snow falling around the boat, the crew all in dress uniform on the deck…yes it was a sight. As the order was given “Voraus ein Drittel” (ahead one third) “ make the boat ready for sea”, the crew all disappeared below deck, and the boat moved steadily out to open water. Just before going below deck, the Captain made one last look around the bay. Snow was falling lightly and covered the ground, the sea was smooth and a light wind brought in all the smells of the wintry scene that laid before him…yes a picture put into memory to be brought back when things got a little rough. Rienhard Hardegen smiled and went below, and gave the order to make their way into the North Atlantic.

I'm looking for the patrol log images in this thread. Where can I find them?

Hardegen's exploits are notable , as read in Micheal Gannon's "Operation Drumbeat" . One of the better books on the Uboat war . Highly recommended .
