How lucky am I!!! I was 100 km west of Scapa when I got a contact report a warship heading east at medium speed, I guessed I had a chance, so I put the hammer down and worked out an intercept course. 6 hours later I get a contact, a destroyer!:x I dive to periscope depth and pick up more contacts that are hidden by light fog, I may get a crusier if I'm lucky was my best guess.

I then spot a Fiji cruiser, then a southampton cruiser, so I get to double my pleasure! then it appears! an Illustrious Carrier!!!:D In a good shooting position to boot!!:arrgh!:

Stuff the cruisers, there a dime a dozen, all four tubes are open with t1's set to high speed as I want to give as little warning as possible. I fire a four torpedo spread and start counting down the seconds, Damm, I hate the wait!:stare: so I strat to turn so I can pop of my aft tube at a cruiser.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Three hits!! The fourth misses, but I forgive it, as a crewman yells "she's going down" I pop my scope up for a look and she being torn apart by internal explosions! I break out the Becks after we have a shot a the cruiser, which is 500 meters away. I fire the aft tube and count down the seconds till impact. Boom! hit amidship! but she still steams away.

I'm in trouble as one of the escorting destroyers has got a scent of me, and the water is only 80 meters deep! I cop some damage from one of his runs, but more from impacting the sea bed. I manage to bring all leaks under control and patch up the damage, as well as avoid the depth charges!

This single destroyer is realy got it in for me! Over a day he keeps dropping charges, and when he runs out he calls in aircraft to help him. I have tried every method to throw him off but no dice.

I then remember someone saying that at two knots they can't hear you, I'm doing three in silent running, so I drop to two knots and dive to 150 meters (I had worked my way to deeper water by this time) and I gave him the slip.

Got a nice little medal and a promotion when I got home!!:p

What if he attacked a task force of like 25 carriers? And sry but the US Navy did almost have a hundred of carriers.

A small task force was hard enough, but 25 carriers would want me wishing for a bigger torpedo room!

That's if I could get past the escorts!!

I know the USA had lots of carriers towards the end of the war but BBW Was talking about the ROYAL NAVY not the USA NAVY. At the end of the war the USA had a massive lead in the size of there fleet compared to the British.

"During the war twenty-two U.S. Navy fleet carriers (CVs) and nine small aircaft carriers (CVLs) served in World War II. Eight ships were built before the war started and the rest were built during the war.

During the war two classes of ships were built:

The Essex Class (http://ehistory.osu.edu/wwii/USNCV3.cfm) - largest class of carriers ever built (26 were completed)
The Independence Class (http://ehistory.osu.edu/wwii/USNCV5.cfm) - most were converted from light cruisers during construction (9 were completed) "By my count that's 66. Not including those sunk during the war. Not quite 100.

When addressing the Captain of a boat, even Sgt. Hartman would know how to avoid the eastern front.

The US had by the end if the war built 117 Escort carriers

31 given to the UK and 6 sunk during the war

They had built ( including carriers available at war start ) 34 fleet carrriers by the end of the war with 4 sunk

Which if my maths serve me correct is 110 at war end

Wheras the Uk had by the end of the war built 24 fleet carriers ( including carriers available at war start ) and also built another which went to Canada
5 were sunk

Escort carriers were 44 in number with 2 sunk
And 17 merc conversions - none sunk

Which meant 80 by the war end

According to uboat.net anyway
Didnt count the ships never completed ( US=2 ) or finished as maintenance ships ( UK=2 )

You...you mean something I found on the internet isn't correct?! The internet is always correct! :rotfl:

Thanks for setting me straight. I had no idea they built so many. I was even surprised by the 66 number.
