Somehow they have become more aggressive with GWX...:shifty:. Actually my last patrol was number 2 and I was putting together a table while submerged under a convoy loading torpedos. I had three DD and a corvette all over me. I was busy and not really paying attention. I guess about 125m down and one very accurate ash can. Flooding was to great and I was crushed like an ant ....
Next time I do not leave the helm. Oh yeah, not everyone was sinking 100000 tons and most were getting sunk after one or two patrols....thats me I'm in the "most" column....

In GWX, wisdom, knowledge and the best training is worth a sh*t if you become surprised in 43 during the night because the enemy has a good working radar, aircrafts with lights etc...

The answer is somewhere between skill and luck. Early war, you develop the skills, only to watch your "perfect theory" become total crap by summer of 1940!
I have gotten better at getting the jump on DD's. An electric set on 3 , takes them right out...I hit a Tribal midships and he drove himself right under the waves after a very nice explosion.

Silver, this sinking was credited to my wife and a table:doh:. The others were, shall we say, a test and tune of GWX;). I started another last night. Sunk 4 in a convoy and went on home. Escaped three DD and corvette. I got a handle on it but darn after 5 patrols and sinking after 2 outing each....one gets a complex:cry:

Since GWX is out, then I'm doing a cowardly convoy-attack tactic: I fire all aft. torpedos (silent running) and then dive under the convoy. Worked for me this far, started september -39, am now in november -40. Hit and run tactics is the thing now mates! If I can survive this long, then YOU can!

sunk a merchant with DG. destroyer surprised and attacked me -> crash dive (merchant destroyed...)

suddenly, instantly, damage reports, pipes breaking, water´s coming in. "ship spotted!"

canceled the patrol due to eavy damage and returned to kiel. ALL torpedoes still with me... but 4 ships sunk with DG...

with GWX ive learned "every small mistake may be the last..."

I'm on my second patrol from Salamis, trying out manual navigation. Had fantastic weather patrolling my grid and trawling between Alexandria and Tobruk, didn't pick up a contact either visual or hydrophone (and I do checks every 3 hours with my own ears) A couple task forces reported on radio but way too far to catch up.
Headed for south of Malta then plan to ambush in the bottleneck between Sicily and Tunisia. And guess what : as soon as I got close to Malta, rain, wind and heavy fog... Might ride it out in port in Lampedusa if it lasts... Sounds like this patrol is not going the right way so far.
Funny thing, I received a radio message from BdU around Nov 10th telling me Salamis was now open for operations. :D

Port attacks still seem to pay off in a big way, at least early in the war. Jan '40 I enter Dunkirk, and after taking out the five docked or anchored Polish V&W destroyers(who furiously pinged me but never moved), I surfaced inside the harbour, putting a total of 57000 tons of shipping to the bottoms with torps, deck gun and flak, ranging from a 24000 ton liner to a 17 ton sloop. All in the glare of the searchlights of every ship in the harbour. Gung-ho? Hell, if they can see my scope but aren't firing, might as well surface and make it all go down quickly. I was out of the harbour after two hours, leaving not a single ship afloat. /brag

It happened only one time in 1939 after which the port defenses were strongly reinforced, and in the game it's just too easy to raid ports (including replicating Prien's raid in Scapa Flow). I don't understand the reward you get from shooting torps 3 kms away on non-moving targets.
But it's just me ( not exactly, have seen some people sharing the same opinion, including Kapt Lehmann if I'm right)

I just finished my 32nd Patrol in GWX and had the pleasure to do some Island hopping found a few mini convoys, the waters were very shallow on my return home (Penang) found myself a convoy about 20km ahead of me,prepared myself for the attack and out of nowhere came two PBY's I couldn't CD the water was too shallow so I had to shoot it out splashed 2 PBY's and then a V&W doing 35Knts came to join the party I think he hit me twice before I reached pd took the v&w out and 5 Merchants returned home with a hull integrity of 43%.

Ditto. Ive TRIED Playing early war. I get bored, FAST. Yeah sure ive been depth charged before 42, but, damn they sucked. Not even close. Early war active sonar is laughable at best. Your under their sonar cone at about 200 meters. Nothing left to do but creep along at 100 RPM's or less, and wait tell they give up and go away. That, and Ive gotten away with bloody murder in night surface attacks.
The closest ive gotten to being sunk was by an aircraft out of freetown (current patro in 6/41l acutally) that appeared 4800 meters to port. Too late to dive.. Went to flank speed, then gave a full port rudder as he was about 2000 meters off. His bombs overshot me like i figured they would, straighted the rudder, crash dived, end of story.
Now.. 43-44... now were talking FUN! :D

Hey, it's my first GWX campaign, I'm checking out the new and improved realism... I completely agree that it's too easy to attack ports, since factors like currents, shore forces, muddy water and not to mention AI reaction are not present. But I had to find out, hadn't I?

1940 and the last one was my screw up. Hit a merchant in port, repaired it and carried on. Really did not think much about it. I went 160m after attacking a convoy and apparently my boat hull damage was way low. 160m did me in :rotfl: :rotfl: I guess I should have taken it back to the barn after hitting the merchant while I was in port:cry: for full repairs.

After my first career ended in 39 with GWX I learned quickly the same strategies won't work. I'm in late 40 now 8 patrols in on my second career and just got my IXB. BTW, Dunkirk in 39 is bugged IMO in the game. Destroyers detect you but don't move. You can sink ships all day. So I just avoid it to keep the integrity of the game.
I've learned to play it safe in GWX and not be greedy. For me it's no port raiding, no taking on DD, no Channel/Gibraltar and defintely no taking on aircraft. I'm happy to take out the largest 2 in a convoy and sneak away, or the easy loners. Even then I've had a few exciting very (very) close calls. I'm sure we've all been there, 150m on the sea floor flooding everywhere getting hammered by 3 DD with air and batteries running out - only to somehow make it out alive. It's intense immersion like that which is the beauty of SH3/GWX...and scary to think about 43-44.
SilverGhost
01-09-07, 03:33 PM
My strategy in GWX follows this line:
Port raiding only in late '39
Convoy attacks only:
-when I don't have to chase them
-weather is degrading
-always if previously "wolfpacked"
-at night
use of deckgun to conserve torps when at all possible.
attack on DD's only when I get the bounce on them...occasionally, I run into a unsuspecting one.
search patterns are conducted over a portion of a quadrant (ie: ne corner of BE is a good one) and let the victims come to me. More often than not, the harvest is good. Shadow the shipping chokepoints.
6-8 hour intervals for a hydrophone dive
I stay out typically til the fish are gone or have sustained really bad damage...like both scopes out...if can't see them, I can't target them! And I've also found out that the UZO, while handy, is worthless most of the time in setting up a reliable kill shot in rougher weather.
In short...cloudy, somewhat foggy, and chop at night equals great hunting conditions. Really lousy weather (high winds, heavy fog and rain combined) I head for 50 meters down and ride it out...the hunting isn't that good in that kind of soup.
Tramp steamers are generally more work than they're worth and I'll ignore them unless I can get the deck gun on them.
I go for the large cargo's, large merchants, the pyros, tankers, etc. All others if they stray into my established kill area.

Sunk at Patrol 5...
Hunting a Convoy near the british Eastcost in April 40... Depth: 55m
Sunk a few Merchants, dived because of detection... Was hunted for hours. 4 Excorts appeared, ~300DCs counted. Heavy damages:
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4189/sh32007011002223332rs6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
That was the last Damagescreen picture. Was lying on the ground for hours. Long time no DC´s (Think they were outta ammo)
Suddenly all the guys were dead! i dunno whats happened. There was no DC hitting me etc. Suddenly - all gone...
Game wasnt over yet. I was blowing all my Ballast to get to the surface. Minutes later they made swiss cheese outta me...
My main mistake/What I have learned:
Do not use "Longer repair Times LITE". No offence to the author, but to need 1200Minutes to stop the flooding is more than just unrealistic...
Im sure that I would have survived with the usual repair times...
Aynway, I had a dramatic evening, because I already lost the escorts a few times. Just as I thought I can make it out of there... All was coming to an end.:dead:
Nah ... good `ol Hawky is just plain crazy.

Escorts arent the worry. Particuarly eary war, their active sonar's max elevation is fairly shallow, so their easy to lose. Go to about 200 meters or deeper, creep along at 100 RPM's, and they'll eventually go away.
However I do have three concerns in GWX in general:
1.) Being suprised on the surface by an HK group during calm weather in late war.
2.) Being caught on the surface by a Tin can at night in rough weather when your visibity is the poorest ( w/ no RWR or Radar), and theirs (via radar) is the highest.
3.) Being suprised on the surface at dusk/dawn by aircraft that dont have radar. RWR in GWX has ludicrious range, so you'll get plenty of advanced warning, its the other ones you have to worry about.

Can I come and work with you??:yep: :yep: :yep:
I'm lucky if I manage to play 1 patrol every two days:down:
Amazing... A 4 week (game-time) patrol takes me minimum a week at 4/5 hours every night.:o

I still say early war is a cakewalk ;)
I agree 100% and it should be a cake walk. My bag is usually something stupid happens that cooks my goose. Last patrol I rammed my own merchant, fixed my boat and moved on. I guess hull integrity was way low:oops:. I went to 160m and my boat just crushed like an aluminum can.
Another patrol, as usual, I hang out waiting for the torpedos to hit and look at all the wonderful fireworks. After they go off the DD are on me and well, I should have gone deep after sending the torpedos. Those first few minutes of crash diving can save my butt. Curiosity killed the cat, as it where.....:dead:
Just mad stupid things like that do me and my crew in:roll:

As you gents know, I had completed my 3rd patrol, see post above. Last night I started my 4 patrol. I'm feeling pretty good man, 4th patrol and all!!!! BDU tells of a convoy and it is being shadowed by our uboats. I blast to the scene and find smoking mechants and DD. I make my run as there is alot of confusion. I sink a Liberty and Pyro:up:. I dive deep and decide to take a few screenshots. I hit the wrong damn keys on the keyboard and I get a CTD:x.

What is that CTD? I suppose a system crash, or something like that, but I'm not sure.
PS And can I have one too, please? ;)
