Ok, So Iīve installed GWX. And the first 20min I just sat there staring and listening to the grammophone. I used to play stock with latest patch.

What a difference. I love it. I still play at 34% realism cause Im still trying to learn the game.

Yesterday I started a new career with GWX and found 3 unescorted merchants.
Everytime I tried to sink them with my deckgun. But hereīs the problem. I seem to miss ALOT when firing it. Shells go way over or way off to one side. And I havenīt checked the rolling u-boat thingy in realism settings.

Before GWX it was easy to fire your deckgun. just put the crosshair on the ship and the shell would hit straight where you aimed. Have I missed something? even though I dont use the "rolling" of the boat options?

One more questions. How long range do the Hydophones have? Iīve read its about 20km, that correct? And should I really trust my crew sonarman or listen myself everytime?

Thanks again for this GREAT mod. I really love it.
And this forum aswell. Iīm in here atleast twice a day.:p

The hydrophone range is about 20km

There is no option to turn off the "rolling u-boat thingy" The option you are thinking of just aligns all views to the world and not the boat.

The deck gun in GWx has been made more realistic. One way this has been done is by increasing the amount the u-boat moves around.
Try hitting the fire button when the u-boat is not leaning over much.

Remember you can use the mouse wheel to zoom in with the deck gun and adjust the range. Ask you watch officer for the range to target.

Ref Deck Gun - this used to be laser sighted (what you saw, you hit) then an excellent modder came along and 'fixed' it. As it should be.

Ref Hydrophones - Yep that's about the range, maybe a bit further. However, you can usually hear further/better than your sonar operator.

Like Letum mentioned, you can use your mouse wheel to zoom in, but if you roll the wheel slow enough, you'll notice that there are 3 different views you can choose from. I prefer using the middle position where you can see the whole gun. As your boat rocks up and down, you can watch and shoot when your gun is pointing close to the right position towards the ship.

You'll still miss some, but with a little practice, you'll get the hang of it. It helps me quite a bit.

I swear with my hand on my heart that the first time I fired the GWX 88mm deck gun at a small merchant, it took only one shot to cause the ship to break in two and sink:o (I hit it amidships, a metre or so above the waterline). The next target was also a rather small merchant, and took only a few shots to sink.

I was like, "WTF?! One-hit-one-kill deck gun?". Maybe I should replace the "She's going down" message with a .wav going "BOOM, headshot!":p.

Seriously, though, it only happened once.

You lucky lucky bastard (mimic the life of brian dungeon scene)

I had to fire maybe 20 shells each for my merchants to go down.

The gun....ask your Watch Officer how far the boat is from you and adjust you cannon to that height. Try to use the cannon as close to zero degrees on your nose when firing because you are less influenced by a rocking uboat:know: If the cannon is at say 90 degrees from you bow, that cannon will be rocking like a baby swing. So keep it as close to the bow as possible for less rocking. You'll be just fine:up:

NP. Hell I figured out the WO thing about three weeks ago:o. I asked him to get me how far the ship was and he said something like 4500meters. I adjusted the cannon to 4500 on the lefthand scale there in the magnified view, hit the fire button and BANG !!! I was right on target:o. HOLY COW! I guess he is not up there suning himself:shifty:

I love using the Deck Gun, but I leave the whole operation to the crew whilst I float towards the victim with the external cam. They're a bit inconsistant though, even stationary at close range they'll have spells just firing rounds straight into the sea or up into the sky or a km to the side.

Still, damage seems random as well, which I like, my best was the first kill on a patrol, I approached a Passenger/Cargo with a Small Merchant powering away from us on the horizon, put three rounds into it and it went up in flames then went down to the bottom of the sea  Haven't been as fortunate since

Am just getting use to the deck gun in GWX havn't sunk a ship in one shot yet, but sometimes when my WO says range to target say 3500m and I elevate the gun to that range I sometime miss and overshoot so I have to lower the range a bit to hit the target now useing it rough seas that's a blood challenge, some of your shells don't go anywhere near you target.

@Andy

What usually happens to me is the WO calls out the distance and while I'm clicking all the buttons it will drop 100M from what he said because I'm usually at flank speed. This creates a miss. Now I adjust the cannon 100m less then what the WO states and I get the desired results. Yes, if the seas be somewhat rough you will miss more often. The God blame thing is rocking and reeling around....it is not a wonder you get any hits at all:o I usually fire as close to 0 degrees off my bow as possible because it seems to be more stable platform.

Get close to the target ship before you fire (< 2000m)

If you are too far away, the probably of hit will be low and you will waste a lot of rounds

Also, be careful,

1) Check the state of the nationalities (hostile? friendly? neutral?)

2) Hostile mechants will call in help once you hit them, and destroyer and air support comes in quickly once their SOS signal is given out... Shooting the target ships takes much longer time than before (due to GWX, which reduces half of desk gun damage), so it may not be a good idea to do so

If I were you, I would send each ship 1 torpedo (or 2 for the dud settings)
After damaging them, surface, get close and open fire
