View Full Version : Gramophone's and their actual use

I'm confused... what precisely is the value of the gramophone? Does it actually mislead the enemy boats? Or is it just aesthetic? I read up on one of the forum posts that the enemy boats confuse it for radio waves...but I'm a bit skeptical. Any advice from the respectable Kaleuns would be of value here! (Just no suggestions I go flank speed down the English Channel...again... :p )

Don't know who told you that it confuses enemy boats. Its meant solely for you, the player, to be able to listen to music while you play. It has no bearing on the game world at all. You could have your gramophone blast "You Shook Me All Night Long" while under depth charge attack, and aside from getting a little chuckle from the irony of it, it doesn't affect the gameplay at all.

And if you want to unlock the extra secret bonus gramophone tracks, you have to make a run through the English Channel at flank speed. Really! :shifty: :rotfl:

I have it set up so that I've got a decent amount of music to listen to, including Bach, Mozart, Liszt, Wagner, and Haydn.

It's strangely relaxing to be listening to Bach's Cello Suite No.1 in G Major while being DCed by 3 DDs.

The bonus gramophone track is "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" by the way. You know:"Glory, glory hallelujah!":rotfl:

The grammophone was an important part of Das Boot, and it was something that all the old gang asked for from the beginning. Play it, you know the one: J'attendrai -- "I will wait for you night & day. I will always wait for you."

Hi Everyone :D
Can anyone tell me how to put my own music into gramophone?

I don't seem to have any luck putting Chicago in. Thx in advance.

Just move the file into the Data/Sound/Gramaphone folder. MP3s tend to skip, so .ogg or .wav is the way to go. It will play sooner or later.

It just adds to the atmosphere.. If you DL & install the gramophone packs, it'll even sound scratchy like the old vinyls..

I've put the Das Boot soundtrack in. It's fun to listen to Rita Cadillac singing Mon Gars and having all that 80's synthesizer music while on patrol. I'll even put on the "high tension" tracks when I'm under attack or if I'm lining up for a torpedo shot so I can feel like Der Alte

I do keep 1 'modern' mp3 in my gramaphone collection. When ever I'm pursuing a convoy or merchant I like to play "Promised Land" by Elvis.. Gets the blood pumping :yep: Kind of nice to pop it on after I expend the last fish & turn towards home port too...

In RL, I still play vinyls! :D
I bought a new grammophone (Technics-based) 10 years back - together with a couple of spare-needles - so I could keep playing my vinyl-collection.
Which is still expanding, btw.
For example, last year, I bought an lp of Marlene Dietrich, called "Das war mein Miljöh", filled with her great songs.
In the same store (1000's of 2nd hand lp's in classic/vintage/oldies/pre- and post WW2, all in top-condition, filling 2 entire 15m walls!!:o), I found an lp of Count Basie, with great big-band jazz songs, recorded between '42 and '46.

And guess what woke up this newly found love for oldies....a grammophone-file for SH3, called Ultimate Gramophone Pack - 150+ tunes and broadcasts.
There are some really nice songs in that pack...I like a female voice, with jazz, like Ella Fitzgerald. Zarah Leander is beautiful too.
I hate Edith Piaf, though.
When I hear her, I want to go back to my more recent music, heavy/progressive/alternative rock LOL:damn:

I think the grammophone option is a great tool for roleplaying.

I've sold all my old records, but when I had them I made them last by opening the sleeve, recording them onto tape and putting them away until the tape wore out. That way they only got played once every few years.

Yer, I still play my old vinyls. Mainly because they are so cheep. You can pick up LPs for 50p. 2 Hours of music for 50p! Its almost as good as the internet.

The store where I found them, isn't that cheap lol.
Many vinyls I saw, were in fact more expensive then when they were sold new.
The rarer, the more expensive of course.
But I don't mind, as long as they are in good shape (including sleeve...beautifull stuff!).

I bought a specially chielded audio-cable, to record from vinyl to PC. :)

Inspired from the dolphin video, I once heared "surfin' bird" while being DC'd :D

Of course, you can put in some sort of stupid hiphop full of offensive violent expressions to hope the DD up there hears it on his hydrophone, but I don't recommend this

I try to stick with proper era music. Anything during and before the 40's. I like to crank up Night on Bald Mountain too.

What is the name of the song that the Captain has played often in Das Boot anyway? And what is the name of the song the girl sings during the bar scenes? I would like to include those too.

There's a static track that loops, giving anything that 'old time radio' sound, in the stock version. Don't know if it's in any of the mods.

my gramaphone is currently setup to play the likes of Dragonforce, trivium, caliban, iron maiden, ac/dc etc... all my crew have long hair and wear spandex.

plus you can confuse enemy boats when at the bottom by playing "its a long way to tipperary" full blast and they might think your british. that or you could melt the hydrophone operators ears with the solo from "through the fire and the flames"

aw hell i've had it running whilst i've been in silent mode and it really does nothing!

Here are 837 tracks of (mostly) authentic German WW2 music. Beware, my Deutschland friends....a lot of these tracks are illegal for you. If you get fined, its your own fault. I disclaim any responsibility. (That being said, I think a few tracks linked on this page are not WW2-period stuff. Download at your own risk)

I have a collection of over 11,000 mp3's on my hard disk and I simply moved them into the grammophone directory and let my MP3 player think that is where they live. Never heard the same song twice unless I asked for it and there is a very ecclectic mix from pure classical through traditional Japanese and Indian, 20's, 30's and 40's, Jazz, Acid Jazz, RocknRoll, Rock, Punk, Retro, 60's , 70's, 80's 90's, and more recent stuff. Never bored listening to them.

I've also got a bunch of goon shows and the full set of Hitchhikers Guide Radio plays. Very surreal listening to that during an attack I can assure you.

The sonar operator to the Captain of the attacking US Destroyer

Sounds like there having a party down there as you here distorted Marching music and the singing ofthe German U Boat crew muffled but clear enough.

Deliberately deceptive the German U boat Captain orders his crew to sing loudly and strongly as she sits so deep that depth charges are easily avoided by listening to there launch splashes from the single attacking DD. Now had there been two it would have been the end. One listening and guiding the other with one active pinging and the other passive.....

It was a :smug: great movie ending with the DD ramming the U Boat amidships......

Just to relax during long patrols. The music itself doesnot seem to be detected by the enemy. So it can play on during convoi attacks. It doesnot however boost moral or influence fatigue model. I think it is great and should be improved in SH-iV.
