View Full Version : Which protection software?

I guess as we near the time when we can actually order Silent Hunter 4, we do need to find out what copyright protection system Ubisoft will be using with this game. As much as I really like what I'm seeing from the DEVS in terms of graphical and gameplay enhancements, the choice of protection software is an issue we can't ignore.
I think most people would agree that Starforce was a bit of a disaster, both in terms of its intrusion into peoples systems and the fact that it was relatively easy to crack. Whatever they use this time has to be an improvement on SF.
Hopefully, the Moderators of this Forum will be able to find out from Ubisoft.
SH4 is going to be a great game, possibly the best sub sim ever, and I hope the choice of protection software has really been thought about this time.

Ubi put SecurROM on Il-2:1946 so I'd be willing to bet that's the one they'll use again for SH IV. Although the way software changes there could be something completely new by the time SH IV comes out.
SecurROM isn't as much of a pain as Starforce was, but it also reportedly has its own basket case of issues as well.

This now is your third thread about this topic... Again, weīll find out soon enough which copy protection SH4 uses. Itīs kinda pointless to discuss this three months or so before release, I seriously doubt that Ubisoft has made a final decision about that yet.

I disagree. I think they made that decision months ago, and as they caused a lot of people a lot of problems with SF last time, and very nearly got hammered in a class action law suit because of that decision, I hope they're smart enough to do better this time.
People have a right to know that they're not just purchasing the game, they're also getting unwanted software that could potentially damage their system.
I think there should be a disclaimer on the box which states 'This game is protected by.............protection software' so that people can Google it and find out just what they're getting.

I disagree. I think they made that decision months ago[...]
Even if they have, it doesnīt really matter. They will most likely use either SecuROM or SafeDisc, both currently totally useless copy protections because itīs very easy to circumvent them, people donīt even need cracks anymore.
Macrovision (SafeDisc) and Sony (SecuROM) will of course try to enhance their protections. Currently those protection systems are harmless, but will newer, improved, versions also be harmless? We donīt know yet. So even if Ubisoft would tell us today that they use SecuROM/SafeDisc it wouldnīt mean "all clear", since we donīt know if Macrovision/Sony are going to change their protections drastically in the coming months and if those changes will have any kind of negative side-effects.
Weīll know which version of which copy protection has been used once SH4 has gone gold, or shortly before that.

As Gizz says, I guess we'll find out in a couple of months. I'll certainly order SH4 as soon as it's available, but I won't install it until I know that I can protect my system against whichever useless but intrusive software protection system comes with it.
