I started a career in 1942 in Bergen (in GWX)
(I started and loaded without using SH3 commander)
Of course, I got my boat, which is a VIIC boat
The equipments are the standard ones, OK. Let's see how much T3 I get...
To my suprise, I got 4 T4s homing eel to use... How come Bdu giving me such expensive stuff??? Also, I received T4 in 1942, that means that I am a beta tester (as it is not released yet, as shown as in the diagram, I cannot get the 5th T4)

I only got 500 renown (the renown of a noob). I didn't sunk any ship, how can I obtain these stuffs?

I started my patrol, with those 4 eel which are more expensive than gold. I lost my boat with all hands after chased down by a Black Swan (6 K-guns, 2 racks), with all the T4s, as I didn't fire any one of them

Well that was very foolhardy of Bdu entrusting you with their state of the art weaponry wasn't it :arrgh!:
The first torps where given to the boats that where trained to use them. This usually meant that they where given to crews that had just come from Baltic training. i.e. "Noobs"
It took a while before they started to send the old Klauens back for re-training with the new torps.
You would think you wouldn't need much training, but various practice runs where done with reusable dud torps that had flags on them so you could follow them around. Thats gotta be fun!
Of course, SH3 just gives them randomly! ;)

I started the same career a little while back, also from Bergen '42 in a VIIC.
Got those T-IV's too. :o
I loaded 3 of them in my stern, and filled my bow with T-I's and T-III's.
Still haven't used the T-IV's, but I've loaded them in my stern, for when I am being chased.
I think they are a nice addition to the decoys I also "bought".;)
Thatīs why I like the renown system. You have to prove yourself to get transferred to a better boat, better equipment etc.

Actually the blunder here was the fact that you did not read the secret mission papers in your cabin! You were to rendezvous with a Japanese submarine around Cape Town to transfer these and some jet engine blue prints.....

Thatīs why I like the renown system. You have to prove yourself to get transferred to a better boat, better equipment etc. Yeah, I know....I cheated, to get better equipment for 1st patrol.
But the T-IV's were there anyway, without cheating!
But the thing is...I always started my SH3-careers in '39....with either Kiel or Wilhelmshaven as homebase.
The result was, that I never reached the later years of the war - I never got further than '41, because I either died, or lost interest because of other games, but only to return to SH3 again and again...and restarting in '39, lol. :)
It also meant, that my enemies were always weaker in those early years...plus that I never got the chance to try new equipment - like radar, acoustic- and pattern-running torps, schnorkels etc - or to try later Uboat-designs, like the TypeIX-series and the incredible TypeXXI.
So when GWX was released, I took a different approach, and used SH3Commander, to pick Bergen in Norway, in June '42.
It will be my homebase untill I (hopefully) reach the end of the war in May '45.
This base has all the Uboat-types and equipment I want to try available, spread over the 3 years to come.
I consider myself an experienced virtual Uboat Kaleun, and that's why I don't feel bad about the renown-cheat I did.
I just wanted to start with what I had been working for in the early years of the war.

The TXI (Ge7s) ones are even better but I don't think they are available until late 43.

I've never used the homing torpedo's though I've had them available ... how do you use them? Just point your tubes in a general direction and fire them off? Or is a solution neccessary?

Initially you want to set up the attack as if a normal torpedo and let it go. She will do the rest. Excellent against the nasty warships...so fun to see there rear get blown off:up: I recommend you shut your electric motors down so said torpedo is not homing in on your rear and blowing it off!

If you want to stay to the official orders then order silent running and dive to 60 ft immediately after launching a homing torp and don't launch more than one.
In real like launching more than one homing torp often caused them to follow each other in circles like a dog chasing it's tail. This is not modeled in SH3, but I only launch them one at a time anyway to stay historical.

So they're really effective? I like hunting the odd Destroyer, weaken the defense's, take a little pressure off my comrades :arrgh!: I'm still in early 1940 in my current game, but hopefully I'll get an opportunity to try them out soon enough, thanks for the advice

In 1940, u have no problem, ahead slow and give it one lovely T1 kiss (with it 5xx kg warhead) will settle everything
In later war period, you really have to use them to help you evade from incoming destroyers... They are hard to evade and will settle your sub to the bottom of the sea...
