I caught Das Boot on Encore about a year ago. I got it taped, too. It's not bad, but with all the praise for it on the forums here I was expecting more. I thought the ending was rather cliche, though.

If it wasn't the 5-hour "Uncut Version", you haven't seen it. As for the ending, some claim it's an 'anti-war' statement. Me, I think it's just because it's German, therefore it has to be an opera.:rotfl:
As far as the praise goes, it's mainly because it was filmed inside a complete mock-up of a u-boat, mounted on a giant gimballed platform that allowed real movement, and it's life-sized, therefore realistically claustrophobic.

I-5 - Nice long boring peice of road.
And I agree 100% with Sailor Steve, you simply have not seen Das Boot until you watch the 5 hour version. That is how it was meant to be seen and that is how you can truly be sucked into the adventure.
Special U-Boat cocktail! Envious?!

Special U-Boat cocktail! Envious?!
:rotfl:The 2WO is great. I was watching it the other night and was trying to figure out just what the "U-boat spezial cocktail" was...looked like lime juice and milk? Yecch!
Another one of my favorites of his: "Those are some meatballs!"*
*Note: This line is only in the uncut version. ;)

It's lemon juice and condensed milk. In the book Bucheim describes the different ways the officers have of consuming lemons, needed for vitamin C to prevent scurvy. One squeezes the juice into a cup and adds lots of sugar, the Chief dumps sugar into his mouth and bites into the lemon wedges, and of course the 2WO has his "coctail". It isn't mentioned out loud in the movie, but if you watch closely you can see the different actors actually eating the lemons in the manner described. It's a small thing, but it adds a lot if you've read the book.
I did notice all of the lemon eating. I had wondered "why lemons?" But now I know. Thanks!

Ah, lemon juice and milk. That's not so bad. That's actually how you fake buttermilk in cooking if you don't have any and the recipe calls for it.
