In another thread i said this:

Man i envy everyone who makes post like this. I swear i have this magical umbrella protecting me from anything bad (fun) ever happening.

Famous last words? then again.. said career game is still alive. Maybe its still true.

Anyway, heres the scenario:

Was patrolling assigned grid submerged. Its daylight. Got a single warship sound contact. I figure, well, not much shipping, if i can get into a submerged attack position, ill sink his ass for the hell of it. So i start plotting, figure out his mean course, and start moving in.

Five minutes later, another warship contact, and another, and another and another. Im thining, "OHHHHHH YUMMMY". Multiple warship contacts means one of two things, an HK group, or a task force. Since im in the med, i see alot of the later and not the former. Smacking my lips, i move the boat to ahead full to get into position. Their far enough way, and i figure going fast enough, they probably wont hear me. Ocean is like.. a dead calm.

Long story short, i have a task force about 3500 meters off to my foward starboard bow. A south hamptan and two Dido's. Now here i thought about it. THe south hamptan's a 10K tonner, the rest are 5K. Fire two electic, wait 30 seconds, and then fire two steamers as a follow up to make sure he goes down, or.... :hmm: I know.. ill try and SINK THEM ALL!

In snap decision i decided to fire two electric at the south hampton on a contact pistol, wait 20 seconds, and then fire a single magenetic shot each for the two Dido's at a fast speed setting. Ideally all 4 torpedos hitting at aproximately the same time.. This might have worked, except i made one MAJOR mistake. I underestimated the time it woudl take for the two steam fish to catch up with the two electric ones i had already released. Instead of using a fast speed, i should have set them for medium.

End result was, torpedo number 3 (steam) hit first on the middle dido, torpedo number 4(steam) hit about 5-9 seconds later on the trailing dido which had enough time to start evasive manuvers, but the fish still hit. Torpedo's number 1 and 2, arrived 15 seconds late, and the south hampton was already all over the place. Torpedo number 1 hit, just foward amidships, torpedo number 2 missed entirely.

And on they steamed.... 4 torpedos, 3 hits, good ones too, and NO SINKINGS.

The south hampton got heavy by the bow, but didint sink. The middle Dido, obviously heavy by the stern, also did not sink, and the trailing dido, just sort of went along his merry way unphased, but i know the fish hit, i saw it explode just aft of amidships.

( Item of note, i used the free cam to take this screenshot. Whilst i moved the camera over to look, i noticed another merchant incoming. *insert foreshadowing drum roll here* dum dum dum dum....)

But the story doesnt end there. Naturally i got some escort "lovin". I went deep, fast. At around 200 meters i stopped getting pinged. Got below their sonar relativly easy. After that i jsut creeped around at 1Kt and waited them out. THey got close ONCE, rest of the time i may as well have been picking my nose. Acutally i got up to take a shower to get ready for work (gotta leave soon in fact), and just let the game run its course. Thats how confident i was that tin cans lost contact.

When i come back to my computer. I decied to sneak a peak with the free cam. And much to my surpise above me, i see a SINKING MERCHANT.. A BIG ONE, and on the otherside i see my tormentor in flames. I have no idea what happened, i can only guess that the merchant by some 1 in a million chance got two close to the DE as it shot out out a full spread depth charges, with the explosion killing the merchant and damaging the DE who was still underway.. Inflames, but underway.

So im scratching my head trying to figure out what the hell just happend there (had my mod cap on at this moment in time), when i realized that the merchant was sinking fast, and he was VERY CLOSE. Infact, almost on top of me.

At that point all i could utter was,. "You gotta be kidding me!" ,

(had to brighten this pics up a bit cause it was really dark down there)

AAH .. 'Get Smart' .. remember all those doors he had to go thru ..?

Wot I find annoying is when you hit something with a torpedo, you get the 'torpedo impact' blurb and the thing just carries along on it's merry way without dropping a knot.

Just thinking out loud here Ducimus..you say you were in the Med...your generally not too far from land in that theatre so is it possible they were attacked by aircraft :hmm:

I think greed and overconfidence has seen more of us sunk than any other reason.

Excellent after-action report there Ducimus. Very enjoyable to read.

I'm not sure if it's always greed, though, or more of a case of 'buck-fever' when you run across something like that. I know my heart starts to pound and my palms sweat when I run across something unexpected like that, especially when you have a limited amount of time to make a decision, and it's soooo hard to decide! :D

Especially now with the escorts acting more agressive and determined. You know you're going to get worked over, and it's like you want more bang for your buck so you decide to target as many as possible in exchange for that.

If I had to select one single thing out of the entire GWX package that has influenced and changed my way of playing it would have to be the escort behavior. Whereas before, when being hunted and depth-charged it was more of a 'ho-hum' attitude that felt anything but realistic, now I get the very real feeling of danger whenever confronted with being spotted and hunted. The escorts are more aggressive, act more intelligent and cunning, and the depth charge runs are more accurate. They require cunning in return to avoid and escape.

I had to laugh seeing the merchant almost plop atop you. I mean, what are the odds to that? I can only imagine what that must be like 'for real', with no way of looking outside like we can via external view. There you are, silently creeping away, when suddenly *BOOM* as something slams down atop you out of nowhere!

Welcome to the 'fun' Ducimus. It only gets better from here! :)

Pilots call it "target fixation". You get to concentrating so much on getting the guy in front of you that you stop looking to see what's behind.:dead:
