Harbor Raiders - Take Note

Occasionally, it's just good sport to go into an enemy harbor and take a look for targets-of-opportunity.

Beware of the tattle-tales of your visit....the sea gulls. They swarm around the immediate area above your submerged boat since you're kicking up a food source from the shallow water.

So far, the DD's don't seem to notice the presence of the birds.

If I'm not mistaken. The used to put food on tow along (fake) periscopes to entice the seagulls to swarm it. Over a period of time the sea gulls would associated this metal pole sticking out of the water with food. Therefore, if the uboat was in a harbor and the birds saw the scope, they would swarm and this would alert the looks outs. This is what I heard, do not know if it was true.

Sounds like a silly story to me, but then I've also read that the US experimented with trying to train dolphins to attach magnetic mines to enemy ships, and I know they tried attaching hand grenades to Frisbees in the '50s, so you never know.

The Russians also used Polikarpov PO-2 biplanes to drop spies behind German lines. The story goes they would be in a box strapped to the lower wing. The box would protect them when they hit the ground, and if it didn't then they had a ready-made coffin.:dead:

I was rather impressed with GWX when on a recent stop over in the Canary Islands, I noticed hawks circling around and then diving down to the water as though they were hunting!! Great stuff!:up:

The russians tried to use dog bombers but they had to stop as they had some problems, They had trained the dogs to run under tanks by putting food there. They didn't have any german tanks, so they used russian tanks. When they released the dog on the front line you can guess which tanks they went for!

The russians then used men from the gulags in place of the dogs, they didn't need as much training, and more intellegent!
