And yamato's sister took like 17 torps to sink her, I think the yamato have the watertight doors open while the other one is closed.

Yamato took 10 torpedoes and "several" bombs. http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-fornv/japan/japsh-xz/yamato-n.htm

Musashi was hit by 17 torpedoes and 20 bombs. It may not have taken that many to sink her, that's how many she was hit by. Yamato's watertight doors were almost certainly not open.

Yamato and Mushashi were the subject of the most extreme overkill a BB has ever had to suffer. Way more than Bismarck (and Bismarck was a clear instance of a massive overkill)

that Mushashi took 17 torpedoes before sinking, or that Yamato did eat 10 before going down doesn't mean they **needed** all those hits to go down.

It's as in SH3 you get a Type XXI out and shoot a Black Swan with all 6 torps in a full torp spread. It will go down. Does that mean a Black Swann needs 6 torps to sink?.

....no. Well, same goes for Mushashi and Yamato :)

I think your comparing apples with pears here matey. These were probably the two most powerful battleships of there era and it was a time of war. The primary objective was to destroy them and that is what was achieved. :arrgh!:

RAM

well, it's a simplification, it's quite understandable that a Black Swann can¡t be compared with Yamato...

but still, the point is valid. as you say it was war. The US aircrews weren't going to deliver **just** the ordinance needed to sink those ships.

They threw everything they had at hand.

What I'm trying to say is that the Yamato and Mushashi ate a lot of fishes before sinking. I'm trying to state that, just because Yamato took 10 torpedoes before siking doesn't mean a Yamato would need 10 torpedoes to sink in every circumstance. Probably Yamato would've gone down with quite less torpedoes had the US aircrews given it the time to sink instead of keep hitting her time after time.

oh, and I don't have a problem with those ships getting that pummeling, either. It was a war and in a war you shoot the enemy until he surrenders or he dies.

Neither Bismarck nor Yamato nor Mushashi surrendered, so it was just fair that they were shot at until they sank.

That's what I was trying to say, too. Shinano was built on the same hull, and it only took four to put her down. That said, there were special circumstances in her case, and the torpedo defense systems were designed to get as much protection as possible.

Oh, I forgot to mention: great find on that video, Seth.

Had a few PM's off someone in this forum just prior to christmas who actually visited the Graf Spee as a child with their parents. They enquired after and received from me a few photos.
Their PM's (the actual details of which I obviously cannot disclose) were quite fascinating re: their recollection of the visit and I hope they come and post publicly for the benefit of everyone here. :yep:
