View Full Version : GWX just won't start!

So I uninstall SH3, delete all the remaining files, including the SH3 folder in My Doc's. Then I check the state of my GWX files to see if theyre corrupted, which they arn't. So I install SH3, then add the patch. I install GWX, and add its patch.

The game installs, starts, and loads fine. Problem is, it crashes whenever I try to start anything like a mission, a campaign mission, or even enter the museum. The loading screen for any of those gets to like 95% and then after a long while it goes to the desktop. Every single time.

This only happens with GWX, so I was wondering if anyone else has this problem?:-?

Give us you computer specs. Did you ever run 1.1A without issue?

I had to edit....I had asked if you deleted the My Document sh3 files but you said you had, sorry.

Yes, I ran 1.1A perfectly.:lol:

P4 2.7ghz, 512mb RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, WinXP.

The specs are a bit low-end for now, I admit, but 1.1A ran excellent, so GWX should ATLEAST start. :p

Yes it should run fine. If 1.1 ran fine this should work also. I hate to say this but did you attempt a second install? If you decide to omit the patch fix and see if she runs for you. Might have to do the process of elimination here.

Haha, I wish it was only a second install. I've tried reinstalling this thing like 5 times. :p

Oh, and 1.1A works fine, and the game without any mods works great. GWX though, without or without its patch, just won't start.:cry:

Try increasing your Windows Virtual Memory. Windows will use HDD space and use it like RAM.

Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory Change.

Then Reboot. (mine is around 4GB)

Try it, might work.

Once I am in the virtual memory change screen, what should I input where?

I didn't change anything from the default, so its probablly 8000.

Initial Size = 1536
Max = 3052

Remember to hit SET, then OK, then apply blah blah etc. REBOOT.

@Red Menace,

Try defragging your HD and doing a disk cleanup... Sometimes doing basic stuff like that can help.

However, in the GWX manual we recommend 1 gb RAM... Plain old Stock SH3 runs a little rough with less than a gig.

Also, granted I'm not too familiar with Radeon video cards... but what I see is a 128mb card. 256mb should have been what they recommended... 256mb cards handle data bottlenecks better.

That being said, the graphics demand on your PC using GWX is LOWER than in GW 1.1a.

There are more graphics in GWX... but they've all been reduced to stock sizes and re-packed into .dat files wherever they could be to increase performance.

Load times are longer because we've put a lot of new units and campaign scripting in... but once the load-up is finished... performance appears to be better overall.

I'm not sure what else to add here.:hmm:

One of my computers have 512MB RAM, and it runs the game, so thats not it. May be a combo of bottlenecks, though.

HAHAHAHA I GOT IT WORKING!:arrgh!:

Thanks to EVERYONE here who gave their 2 cents, if it wasn't for you guys responding so fast, I would've given up long ago.:cool:

Anyway, danlisa's virtual memory idea is what I think did the trick. Thanks, danlisa!:up:

Again, thanks to everyone here who gave a damn.

Someone remarked they had changed their virtual memory to

Initial size = 1536
Max = 3052

but shouldn't it be

Initial size = 1536
Max = 3072 (since this number and not 3052 is twice times 1536?) I just noticed this, but I don't know bc I'm not computer savvy by any stretch of the imagination. And if not why 3052?

The virtual memory solution might be the right one or course, but I encountered the same situation last night when loading a saved game, just after leaving port about 200 Km. The only way I got things working again was to back-up my career files and do a full uninstall/re-install. I presumed I must have made a mistake in installing the Dec 23 corrections mod. Not rolling back or deactivating existing mods or some such, I couldn't recall clearly. Anyway, after a reinstall and re-activation of all the mods starting with the Dec 23rd, everything worked fine. Pasted the career files so I hadn't lost anything.

Now, save up some money and get a second stick of 512 RAM. It will do wonders for the health of your computer and you;)
