Well i have final found time to play on my career install of GWX. I have been neglected my career while i have been having a ball playing many Mp games.
My First patrol went well sinking just over 20,000t and i had three hit on the HMS Rodney. But alas the DD's detected me and held me down why the convoy made good there escape. I tryed for 3 days to find the convoy again with no luck what so ever.
Here are a list of my victims on that First patrol.

Well here is the patrol report of the second War patrol of U-49.
We were waved off at the pier by the Flotilla Commander and other high rankers.
When we had only just left the pier i noticed that the Blucher had layed anchor during the night in port.
http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/5494/gwxcar5sq5.jpg
We had unaventfull passage through the Kiel canal and and returned the hellos and waves of the people of Brunstbuttle as we clear the canal in to open water.
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/7825/gwxcar6ch5.jpg
Not long after breaking out into open water we spotted some locals out on a pleasure cruise. My number one jokingly said we should give the deck gun crew something to shoot. But we both knew the deck gun crew would have there fun in time.
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/5526/gwxcar7ja0.jpg
After clear the channel that leads to the Canal we put the enigines to ahead one third and went through the normal drills to keep the men fresh and on the ball.
Five days after leaving kiel we were just North West of Lerwick and it was late evening and we were conducting are hourly hyderphone check when i got the call that we had a sound contact moving in we altered course to what should give us our best chance of shot should i be an enemy ship. Just after 02.00am we up the scope and there just under 1000m of our bow was a large british merchant. A nice juicey target to get the patrol off to a great start.
At a range of 900m we let lose with 2 torps everyone had there fingers crossed that the attck would be sucessful.
Then right on time expolsion followed by another YESS to hits right amidships the ship stops dead in the water. She starts to sink by the bow then is slips under the waves and is gone.
http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/142/gwxcar8se2.jpg
http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/5950/gwxcar9bk2.jpg
After the sinking of the large Merchant we continued on our course to our patrol grid of AM 76, For the next 5 days we did not see another ship or even pick up any contacts on the hyderphone. But we did play crash dive games with the enemy planes that seem to be hunting for us after the sinking of there ship.
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5050/gwxcar12jf8.jpg
The days of no contact changed on the 9th of Nov when we were on are hyderphone check we picked up a faint contact at a constaint distance. We surfaced at once and ran off on a interseption course after 2 hours at high speed the look outs spotted smoke on the hirszon. We closed into a range of 2000m and open fire on a british small merchant, The deck gun crew went to work and in the early morining they sunk the second ship of the patrol with just over 20 shells.
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/6160/gwxcar10te6.jpg
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/4852/gwxcar11bh6.jpg
After the sinking it was back on our original couse to our patrol grid we had been on course for three days after are last sinking without sighting so much a fish ,
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/1925/gwxcar13ka7.jpg
When we pick up yet another sound contact we surfaced and set off on a course to find the contact it turned out to be yet another British small Merchant, we closed the gap to her to around 1200m then opened up with the deck gun in worsening weather. After and 30min action the deck gun crew had her heading to the bottom this was turning into a good patrol.
http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/4569/gwxcar14ck3.jpg
http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/766/gwxcar15jt2.jpg
After the sinking it was off to our selcted patrol grid we patroled there for the ordered 24 hours then i desided that we would turn back north to the hunting grounds northwest of Ireland. We had only been in that area when we ran into a outward bound pryo ammo ship. We closed the gap to her and opened up with the deck gun. After only a few hits she was a blaze but the weather was getting to bad to aim well enough so i desided to finsh her off with a torpedo the fish malfuctioned so we fired another and it hit with a big bang amidships.
The next morining we spotted a small merchant trying to make her way to England.
She was sent to the bottom with the trusty deck gun crew the victors yet again, though we only have 60 rounds left for the beast now.

Stay tuned for part two

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/7523/gwxcar17mb0.jpg
Very early on the morining of the 17th the watch crew spots smoke in the distance we plot a course and run off to investige we find it to be another pryo ship trying run the blockade we close to with in 600m and fire a torpedo it hits in the bow section ship seems to slow and starts to list instead of using another torpedo to finish her off i call up the deck gun crew to do the honours she goes up with a bang after about 10 shells.
http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/2182/gwxcar18zw7.jpg
Later that same day we came across two more ships the first one a Tramp steamer which was sent to the bottom with the last remaining shells from the deck gun and one torpedo.
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/3326/gwxcar19gp0.jpg
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/8230/gwxcar20vz8.jpg
The Passenger cargo went down with a bit of trouble i thought just the one torpedo would send her to her grave but we needed to put another torp into her as we had no more shells for the deck gun left. But it was yet another sinking on what was turning into amazing patrol.
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/4740/gwxcar21wa7.jpg
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/7884/gwxcar22ey8.jpg
On the very next day we ran into the targets that would use up are remaining torpedos. The first one was a small merchant which was picked up on are hourly hyderphone check. We closed the target submerged and moved into fireing postion, we fired off our first torp at a range of 450m it hit amidships and stop dead and started to sink on a even keel. But after and 2 hours it would not sink any further and it was desided to put a finishing shot into her. Which smacked into her in the bow and down she went.
http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/6541/gwxcar23yz8.jpg
The next ship to fall prey to us that day was a Tramp steamer, we picked her up on are hyderphones almost as soon as the merchant before her was sliping beneath the waves she was coming towards us so we lay in wait and when sighted we moved in to fireing postion. We let her close to just under 1000m then let her have two of the best. Both hit in the stern of the ship and down she went.
The last of our targets was another small merchant, She was spotted my the lookouts as we raced from the scene of our last sinking.
We droped to PD deth and let her close on us and moved into firing postion we fired one torpedo which hit amidships. She sank down a bit but was not going to go under so our last eel was used to put her under, For fun we desided to surface to fire are last eel. It hit with a bang and down she went.
http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/9059/gwxcar24hr2.jpg
Then it was rime to set a course for home back to family and friends oh and lots of beer and women for the crew
http://img483.imageshack.us/img483/4975/gwxcar25gg1.jpg
We had a very quite ride back to base we tryed to stay as far away from the UK as possible. It seemed to work as we spotted no planes are ships and we arrived off the mouth of the Kiel canal on the early evening of the 27th. We made good speed back up the canal and Kiel came into sight in the Morining of the 28th.
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/4844/gwxcar26cu1.jpg
As we pulled in along side the pier i noticed a car pull up oh my god it was Onkal Karl!!! He steped aboard and addressed the crew and was very happy with us and wished us luck for are next patrol.

It was one week before Christmas and we were ready to sail on our third war patrol.
We had the very nice words of onkal Karl ringing in are ears from the send off party the night before. Though we were going to miss Christmas at home we were itching to get the the enemy. Let losse are torpedos and get back home safe and sound.
We sliped from the pier and set course of the canal. With the harbour patrol planes buzzing over head.

As we aproched the first bridge we notice the were people wave us on are way so we replied in kind it was nice to know that we were doing a duty that made many proud.
http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/959/gwxcar30kn8.jpg
As soon as we hit the open sea after are safe transit through the canal. The weather turn very sour indeed a overcast sky rolled in and the wind picked up and after a day or so the the rain started to fall. It seemed we had started are run to are patrol grid in a nasty winter storm.
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/545/gwxcar31fy6.jpg
We arrived on station at are patrol grid AM51 on Christmas day itself the weather was still very bad indeed. We try to stay submerged as much as possible as vissablity was down to under 300m for days. We patrol the grid without picking up a single contact which was very disshearting as we had great success in around the same area on are last patrol. We desided after a week of patrolling the grid to move on to the hunting grounds of the grid next door. We had been patrolling in grid AM52 for a few day when we picked up a contact on the hyderphone. We closed the target submerged as the contact was closing and the weather up top was hideous. We closed to within 500m and we could not see the target but as we closed further a small British merchant poped out of the heavy fog . We fired off to torps but one was dud but the other hit with a nice bang amidships. The weather was so bad that the one torpedo was enough to see her sink beaneath the waves. Yes at last we were off the mark on this cruise.
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/6830/gwxcar32xj6.jpg
After the sinking we headed off back on are patrol course it was only 10 or so minutes latter when we heard a warship coming in fast. It did not alter course to are postion. It was very unluck as if it was a clear day we would have had a very good shooting postion on this bad boy.
http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8884/gwxcar33wj5.jpg
Later that day we pick up several more contacts on the hyderphone. We were able to find three of the contacts and get into firing postion even though the weather was so bad. What was even more amazing was that we managed to send all three to the bottom. Even though we had yet another dud torpedo.
http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/4251/gwxcar34lk2.jpg

3 days after sinking those 4 small merchants in the one day the weather final started to break and we could at last do some patroling on the surface without the risk of getting lost overboard. We were ploughing along nicely when the lookout shouted that he had spotted smoke so we put the enigines full ahead and of we went to investigate.
It turned out to be a tramp steamer as the weather had got better I called for the gun to be mad ready and the deck gun crew to do there worst to the steamer.
It was not long before the steamer was sinking to the bottom. We were soon back on course. This was turning into a good patrol even though the weather had not been too good up to know.

Very good mate! Just want you to know one thing:
(edited 'cause I'm a rude bastard:damn: :damn: )
mr chris

It only took another day for us to run into are next victim which was yet another steamer. Again it was time to call apon the deck gun crew it did not take them long to brake the back of the steamer.
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/1813/gwxcar39mb0.jpg
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/7669/gwxcar40kb0.jpg
Then on the 10th of Jan the weather took a turn back towards the bad again as a major storm rolled in. It was not all bad as we picked up another contact on the hyderphones, we close on the contact and it turned out to be a big ammo ship bound for the UK. We moved into a good firing postion and waited for the big ship to come into view we fired 2 torpedos at her one hit the other was a dud. As fast as we could we set up for another shot this time it went staright and normal and hit her right in the bow and up she went with a massive expolsion that could be felt through out the boat.
Later on that night we came across and other contact and moved into fire only that when the ship cam into view we saw it was a neutral!!!! What a waste of time.

For the next 12 days not a thing was possible to bring the war to the enemy on are patch of sea as the mother of all storms pounded the living hell out all that lived on the sea. We spent most of are time submerged only coming up to vent the boat and charge batts
On the early morning of the 22nd the weather final got better and as no surpise as the weather got better so did are luck we picked up smoke on the horizon and off we went to see what was the course of the smoke it turned out to be a large merchant as we had no torpedos left it was left to the trusty gun crew to dispatch the big vessel to the bottom it took them a while but they got the job done.
Late on the same day we came across another ship this time a small merchant yet again it was the deck gun crew that done the job, they were earning there pay yet again.

Just over a week after sinking are last ship we were slipping in the harbour at Kiel. We noticed that the hipper had join the blucher since we had been away somethimg big was going to happen we all thought. It was lat at night when we got back so it was not till the following morning that I was told that I had recived the iron cross second class.

How did you place the markers on the nav map with your own text, as in the below screenie

How the hell u get that many ships sunk?

Johnno74
The marking and text on the map look like the work of SH3 generator to me. A top bolt on mod, try it! Lots of itop intel and so far as I am aware compatable with all other SH3 Mods.
Lots of sunken ships, in the same area, I'd say convoy.
mr chris
01-07-07, 06:10 AM
@Johnno74,
Hakahura is right SH3 Gen is the program that puts all the intel on the nav map. It is a great tool and i never leave base without it.
As for all the sunken ship icons in the same area it was not a convoy but lots of single ships that i picked up. It is my favorite hunting ground at the start of the war. I always make sure i use all means to sink anything i come across. You try that patrol area in the early war period and see what you find.
I have another update to add soon as i just got back from patrol number 4 and it was a very good patrol indeed.:arrgh!:

Once again all were present and correct and all stores and munitions were loaded and U49 was ready to depart on its 4th war patrol. It had only been 19 day since we had dock at the same pier coming back from our last patrol. But the fast turn around was due to the great hunting ground we had found N/W of Ireland. We had become a victim of are own success. We set off with out much fanfare due to the timing of are sailing. We push off and set a course down the Kiel Canal and out into the the open water of the Nordsee.

http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/1930/gwxcar67ey7.jpg
Once we made it to open water we conducted the normal drill to prepare are selves for every eventuality. The weather was clam and we started to make good speed to are hunting grounds. Till we started to round the top of Scotland north of Lerwick we ran into foul weather.
We had been travelling along in the storm front for a few day when we on of the lookouts spotted some smoke on the horizon and we move into investigate it turned out to be a heavily defended taskforce which from what we could make out was made up of 3 BB 2 Cruisers and a about 6 DD’s.
We moved into to see if we could get a hit on one of the capital ships we fired a spread at a Nelson class BB but just after we had fired the force changed course think that we might have been detected we went deep and went to silent running. We stayed down till the Taskforce had passed. Well we had wasted 4 torpedoes but it was too much of a target to not try and shot at. As I said to the crew we will have better luck next time.
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/827/gwxcar68aj6.jpg
The Very next day the weather got better if only it had been better the day before and we might have sunk that BB. But alas we used the weather as best we could and made good speed once again to the hunting grounds of AM52, 54, 53.
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/1965/gwxcar69ob7.jpg
On the late night of the 8th of March the Hydrophone operator picked up a funny contact moving away at medium speed. We surface at once and ran off in pursiut at top speed. In the early hours of the 9th the lookout spotted a sail in the distance. Well we had run this far at top speed for a bloody sloop!!!! Well we were not impressed at all well I sent the deck gun crew to work and after a couple of shells the sloop was fire wood.
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/1756/gwxcar70js3.jpg
Well we turned back to the hunting grounds and started to patrol in search of great targets than a sloop.
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/7974/gwxcar71tg5.jpg
We saw nothing for 2 days then the weather took a turn for the worse again and we were surprised by a enemy plane we just managed to get out of the way for it we will be paying much more attention to the sky in future.
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/4405/gwxcar72ss8.jpg
The bad weather had been with us for a day when we picked up a sound contact we moved in to see what it was. We found a coastal tanker which we sent to the bottom with a torpedo to amidships.
In the early morning of the 9th we spotted a large cargo trying to make her way to England we closed up on her in the lighting sky and put 3 torpedoes into her and she went to the bottom with her precious cargo.

Well the Uboot that he have is a VII class, and have 14 torps on board, plus he use allot of his deckgun....
If you're a good aimer, can use 1 torp a ship(1 shot 1 kill)... for deckgun it's a question when the weather is good, thats 70% bad weather and 30% good weather in GWX...
I use the deckgun allot(when the weather is perfect) and if there is a ship nearby...
Torps i use for bigger fish...
For me i use 2 torps a ship, and wait patience when the ship go down...
With deckgun average 30 a 40 rounds a ship...(if it's a big ship, i shoot), if small i let the crew shoot...

The next day we came across 2 more enemy ships this time they were both small merchants. Both we attacked on the surface with torpedoes both needed to 2 torpedoes to send them on there way to the bottom. Though we did have another dud which was not good I thought we were going to have a patrol without a torpedo failure. Well maybe next time.

That was the end of are torpedoes now we only had deck ammo left but we had over 200 shells left so I very confident we would still sink so major shipping with it going past patrols.
Then followed a days patrolling without a contact but on the second day we found are next victim by hydrophone. The sound contact was closing on us so we wait for him to come to us and surfaced and when he came within good range we opened up on her she was soon ablaze and went down without to much hard work for the deck gun crew.

http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/6100/gwxcar81rv6.jpg
The next day we spotted a ship in the distance we went to to find out more and found a medium merchant a nice target for the deck gun crew. After a while they had the ship listing and going down.
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6964/gwxcar82ye4.jpg
The next morning we found are best target of the patrol so far a nice fat large merchant. The deck gun crew were ordered on deck and when the gap to the target had closed they went to work and start to pump shot after shot under her water line and before long she was heading to join the rest of the ships we had seen so far this patrol. This was great we had sunk a medium and large merchant with the deck gun in the space of two day happy time indeed.

The then followed 9 days of very bad weather we spent most of are time submerged being that we could hear more than we could see up top. We picked up a few contacts in that 9 day period but were unable to do any damage to the contacts as we had no torpedoes left, only the deck gun so we had to wait to for the weather to improve. Then on the morning of the 27th when we surfaced to recharge are batts we were greeted with a sunny sky and clam seas it was time to get back on the hunt with are remaining deck gun ammo.
It did not take long for us to get a visual contact on an enemy ship we closed the distance to her and we had a small merchant before are gun and she was soon dispatched of and we had another pennant to make for are arrival when we got back to Kiel.

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/5687/gwxcar85rw8.jpg
The following day we came across a large ship that we identified as a large cargo. We closed to her and started to do battle with the deck gun but we ended up fight a two front war as a plane happened to find us and we decided to stay and duke it out on the surface with the buzzard, she came at us and fast from the stern. The flak gunner went to work and must have managed to put the pilot of his run as the bombs dropped wide. The plane beat a retreat from the boat and the flak gun. We put a few more shells into the merchant and submerged to take cover should the the plane have called for backup. 30 minutes later the merchant was sinking from view to the bottom of the sea.
We made are escape submerged till dark to aviod any planes that might have been sent to find us.

http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/6624/gwxcar87pi8.jpg
Early on the morning of the 29th We came across another large cargo this was Christmas come early I only hoped that we had enough deck gun shells left to put her under we closed the range and went to work trying not to waste a single shell. With only 4 shells left she put on a list and started to sink from view. It was time to radio HQ off are haul and to report that we were on are way home.

It was a very uneventful trip home with the weather very bad most of the way but when we were within sight of are homeland we received word that operation harmut was being this I fear will put payed to are long needed leave. With the first rays of the new sun we slipped next to the pier and so ended are 4th war patrol. The flotilla commander came aboard and congratulated the crew and myself on another great patrol he said. He said he would do all he could to get us the leave we deserve but we might still be needed in the up coming operations in Norway.

Yep i do run close to Bergen and the West coast of Norway i do this as in my game it is still early 1940 and Norway is still neutral. I run close to the coast and take check on the hydro every few hours hoping to catch enemy ship coming out of Norway fully loaded with cargo. As for the run around the top Scotland i run a bit further up towards the Faroes to try and aviod the ever expaning enemy plane threat . I will change my tatics soon as im on my 5 patrol now and Norway has almost been captured and i will be soon relocating to the French biscay coast. That is if i surive that far.:arrgh!:

My route may be a little bit longer but do tend to spend a bit of time submerged which helps to conserve the fuel. When on the surface i run at around 7-9 knots i find this the most econimical speed for fuel comsuption.
AVGWarhawk
01-08-07, 02:56 PM
I usually run at 14-15 kts and that eats the fuel. Bad weather is not helping either. I have the IXB and just upgraded the engines. I often find myself at 25% fuel and 8 torpedos left:o. The IXB is a pig but she is my pig:yep: I need a cruise control button for fuel savings. Maybe the new engines and running at 7-8 kts will do wonders for my fuel:rock:
