I'll have my hands full with that, Halo 3, Spring Break, and a trip to Washington DC.

Yup, add two or three months to that if not six. But I'm expecting it this year, too. That's cool, I'll wait. Gives me time to play GWX.

Probably a week after release. Heh...

March is fine by me...heck, even later if they have to. I'm willing to wait longer for a more polished product. I doubt the suits at Ubi share that opinion though.

SH4 will be in much better shape at release than SH3 in my opinion. SH3 was always chasing the game because of indecision in the production process early on. This created a bottle neck situation towards the end of the production schedule and as a result, sufficient Beta testing was not carried out.

I don't think we'll see the kind of 'patch mania' with SH4 that we saw with SH3.

Plus its under new managment and they didnt have to build the engine from scratch :)

If the official release is March, then wait for a few patches to make it run properly, wait for the community mods and a cheap re-edition, should be OK for 2007 Christmas present...:D

BRILLIANT IDEA!

And then we can wait forever for the next generation Sub-sim because no developer will ever consider investing the millions of dollars it costs to produce and market one.

Geeze people...

If we, the core, the very heart and soul of the community, actually think like this then it's lights off and last one out lock the door for this particular hobby.

We'll be playing SH4 well into the 2020's if we think like that...

Yeah, I agree, John. I'm not trying to be rude to you, Corsair, and you were probably joking a little, but creating the SH3, SH4 game and getting the it to the point where we get it takes a lot more time, money, talent, and work than many people realize. I truly appreciate the mod teams, they are great, but it all starts with the dev team. :ping:

I really don't see a release date problem here. By taking the existing game engine and modifying it, the DEVS shaved months off the production schedule for SH4. This allowed them to make significant graphical and game play enhancements so that SH4 will be superior to SH3 in every way.

I think we'll see SH4 in March/April, and I hope that the success of this game allows for another visit to the U Boat war in the Atlantic for SH5.

but dont get ur hopes up guys, unfortunately games r usually delayed, but its a double edged sword. if they delay the release they have more time to fix it. SC2 was delayed alot but it was a pretty good game. id prefer they take their time and make it right :D:ping:

OK I apologize for the bad joking...
In the last twenty years I have sunk enough money in computers, hardware and software to buy me a holiday house and a boat, so I have done my share to support the industry...;)
It was only a joke, I don't intend to buy SH4 at all, I'm not a fan of the PTO. Can't even get to fly Pacific Fighters, always come back to the East Front... SH3 will do the job for me for 2007 on the subsim side.
There were days before it became a big business when software companies like Microprose were selling games only when they were finished (with the exception of Falcon 4 which was the last one and the company had been sold anyway - another example of a bad release which was saved by the modding community) and I bought every one of them the day they came out. Some small companies still do that (I think of Battlefront for instance) but the bigger ones today tend to rather run on a release date schedule, whatever the state - the internet will allow patches to finish it later...
So I confess in the past years I never again bought a game on the release date and I will continue doing so. At least, even at a cheap re-edition price, I always bought all of them, which is not either necessarily the trend in today's internet world.

PS : and by the way, why always want a "next-generation" something before you even finish taking everything out of the present generation. SH3/GWX just came out : how many months will it take to run a complete career in all of the proposed flotillas and possible bases, exploring the coasts of UK, US, a couple of trips to the Caribbean, to Africa, to the Black Sea or the Far East ? How long before you try some action in all of the scripted campaigns ?

OK... let me be the first to say it.

Silent Hunter will have some bugs. With software as complex as this it is inevitable.

Now it won't have as many as people will be moaning about 2-3 days after it's release. Most of those will be people who didn't RTFM, who won't like/understand some of the new physics that will be a part of it, or who just like to bitch.

But there will be some bugs. Get used to that concept, and accept two facts...

1) The Developers care deeply about their product and won't let any show stoppers go unfixed and...

2) It's not going to be everything that everybody wants it to be, but it will be a great deal of fun

and your life will be much more enjoyable.

I am looking very much forward to SH4. I have played SH3 patched... up to the current GWX. It is a fine, beautiful, captivating game. Who could not like it? And my compliments to all the Company and Volunteer workers that have produced it.

Yet... and I just, flat, cannot help it...I have quit. I just cannot put one more 'fish' into a British Vessel. Yup, it's only a game. And likely there are very, very few of 'us' that both play the game AND were alive in the 1930's. I just can't do it anymore, and while I will not part with such a fine product that didn't cost hardly anything, I have moved back to Nuke Boats for this Winter's entertainment, while *I* await SH4.

Yes, I know the history...'been there'... of U.S. naval ops in the Pacific Theater, and it definitely lacks the complexities of The Reich Boats and the Allies, in the Atlantic.

Anyway, I 'hope' Wolves of the Pacific [or whatever it is called; I forget] will be a good game, as good as SH3.

Fair Winds and Following Seas....

Totally agree with you, and that's precisely why I don't buy games before all said bugs are fixed, either by the dev team or by the modding community. And I think you can also agree that even if the dev team are at the start, all of the games which survived over the time (SH3, Falcon 4, IL2, OFP, EAW, EECH, GPL, etc...) are those where a strong community and talented modders continued to bring evolutions to the original (and in the case of IL2 where the work from modders was actually included by the dev team in the next release). Most of the games only in original versions are collecting dust on the shelves after a few months.

Concerning the PTO, I'm not being critical, I just don't get the hang of it. Except for carrier operations, therefore might have a look at the "Carriers at War" re-edition by Matrix Games.

Although I play SH3 since a long time, going thru all the mods (RuB, IuB, NYGM, GWX) I'm not tired yet from putting fish in the allied ships.;) The way I play it has also gone slowly through its own evolutions from "easy play" all the way to manual targetting, no WO assist, no external cam, and now starting "hardcore navigation" - no sub icon on the map -so it's like playing a new game each time...

The only thing I wish for players interested in the PTO is that SH4 will last as long as SH3 and that the community will bring it up to the same level.

@ Chief of the Boat :

" Yet... and I just, flat, cannot help it...I have quit. I just cannot put one more 'fish' into a British Vessel."

Don't want to spoil the party, but basically sub games are about putting fish in the other side's vessel. Won't be much different putting US torpedoes in Japanese ships, except that graphics will look better and a few basic bugs will (hopefully) be corrected.;)

I think SH4 will have a few cosmetic flaws but will be a superb sub sim. The only question now is, when can we start ordering it?

As long as 2007 is the year it's released that's good enough for me.
