View Full Version : Wolfpack!? --jaw drops--

I had to pause my patrol and come here. This is incredible!
Two days into my fourth patrol. It's 9 January 1941, and I've left St. Nazaire heading to BE59. My lookouts call out 'submarine spotted!'
Now, as they aren't calling it out like they did for the S-boat, I assume it's one of ours. And it is.
One of ours.
One of three, to be exact.
Three of them, on the surface, slicing their way, flak-engaging, through an unescorted convoy. (Yum!)
I've some screenies of them if anyone's interesting in seeing them. For now, I'm back to the fun! :D
(This is GWX, by the way)

There are wolf packs... But for safety's sake... Better dive and look through the periscope to see what the sub is... I havn't seen any hostile sub yet but there are some, as shown in GWX manual...
For a S-class or Gato, fire him and salvo and tell him
"YOU ARE FIRED"

I've already spotted, and sank, an S-class sub. :D
Ok, update on the patrol: 9 ships sank, most by deck gun. The entire convoy is sunk. Three were crippled by the wolfpack prior to my arrival (and even during). At least one of the U-boats has sustained damage: riding low at the stern and visibly damaged there, too. Leads me to believe they engaged and destroyed whatever escorts might have been present before I got there.
It was amazing having other U-boats about. And at this point in the war, having no escorts around, and having the merchants unarmed it was, well . . . shooting fish in a barrel. Gonna enjoy the 'Happy Times' while I can.

Did they submerge or stay on the surface??

They stayed on the surface.

My understanding is that AI sub's will never go down. If they are surfaced, they stay that way. Would be nice though ;)

show the screenies
After a lacklustre patrol I decided to pay Freetown a visit and to my surprise, saw my prize target, the 24000 ton liner on fire and sinking as well as a couple of other ships. Could it have been these guys got ahead of me? GWX BTW.

Come on Albrecht...show them the goods
I thought AI subs cannot fire torpedoes/engage enemies, so how comes the AI subs you saw sank ships???:o

They can't fire "Real" torpedoes, but Serg made a virtual torpedo (a modified cannon), that's what they fire, also flack guns.

No, I arrived as they were engaging the ships with their flak cannon, and they sank two ships during my approach to the convoy. I saw them attacking, and I saw them sink two of them.

Here's a screen shot of the plot board showing a convoy with 2UBoats trailing. I didn't get a shot of the subs, but they did set two of the four escorts on fire. This is the second Wolfpack I have ran into, the next one I am going to try and get better screen shots. This was in Feb. 1941 in BF16.

I just plugged in GWX this weekend and ran into a surfaced enemy sub just outside St Nazaire. Actually had a surface fight with him. AI sub was firing deck gun and both AA guns at me. I closed to within 500m because this was too cool. he won.

I ran across the three subs yesterday. I just hit a convoy with my last eels and had escaped through the back door. They were in trail of the convoy. Got in formation with them for awhile but they did not close. This was a good idea because the convoy had three (3) Black Swan escorts.
Very Cool...:D

Tonight i had the 3rd mission in my campaign that i met a convoy with
german VII subs.
This last mission i was out of ammo and reported this by radio.
Suddenly 2 subs were coming and they gunned (torpedoed) my target.
It was night so very nice to see with the moon on the background.
Really good made the GWX mod. Sh3 is a new game. I am enjoying it very much.
Btw i could give a golden medal to a crewmember for the first time. (play on 84% reality)

Back OT...you are right Albrecht, there are friendly U-boats in-game and they do engage the merchants, but only on the surface and with their guns
@ jim: Do they respont to radio reports you send out, like the Luftwaffe does, or are they just "random attackers?

Not 100% sure they do
You find find some attached close to convoys and others roaming the seas

What about Serg's submerged u-boats with virtual torpedoes? Are they in?
Huh, I haven't seen a single sub in-game myself, except from lone ones near ports.

On my second Patrol I was shadowing a Convoy, waiting for better weather... Ive contacted BdU and told him about the Convoy... Days later I found a huge U-Boat symbol on the map, just ~ 50nm behind the convoy...
Later Ive attacked the Convoy, weather was fine again, but a Destroyer pushed me down to 200m...
I was playing with 100% realism, so I wasnt able to use the external camera... After this Patrol, I will never, ever go out without the external cam again!
I was listeing to the Destroyer and the Convoy. Suddenly Ive heard a explosion (100% sure it was a Torpedoimpact, but I fired no Torps...) seconds later Ive heard a huge secondary explosion (oil explosion).
Im pretty sure that Ive listened to a U-Boat attack with those "virtual torpedos"...
I was stunned... I thought this cant be, because they cant fire real torps... but im absolutely sure about what Ive heard - and I know my sounds! :yep:
After that, and a sinking ship, I didnt hear anything else like this except a short gun battle - now I guess the escorts detected the sub(s) and sunk them...
Amazing!

There are really plenty of them out there SK...it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time :yep:
Try the single player mission PQ-17...you'll see them straight away
